Chapter 35: Turning Point, Part 2

As we drove, the devastation in the town was everywhere. Buildings were in ruin. Innocents passed by, ducking their heads, careful not to meet our gaze as they hurried past. Others gave us dirty looks, their eyebrows pulling together. And the old saying "if looks could kill" passed through my mind more than once. We drove a bit farther and spotted the convenience store. It was dark, desolate. They must have closed about an hour before, or for much longer, if the truth was known.

Derek pulled into the parking lot and shut off the headlights as my heart pounded hard within my chest. He backed the jeep along the side of the building, stopping in the shadows, and cut off the engine.

"What are we waiting for?" Trevor asked, looking around.

"Let's just make sure it's safe first," Derek said, looking around wearily. "I have a bad feeling about this."

My heart sank at his words.
