Chapter 48: Escape, Part 2

Within minutes, we reached the jeep, waiting for us like a savior in the darkness of night. Brolin quickly slung open the hood of the jeep, then reconnected the spark plug wires and tightened the distributor cap, I guessed, while I loaded Timmy carefully into the jeep. Lisa and Markesha hopped into the back seat.

"Don't leave me, sissy," Timmy pleaded with wide eyes as my heart shattered into pieces.

"I'm not, Munchkin," I replied as a tear slid slowly down my cheek. "Keep the seat warm for me, okay?"

Timmy grinned and the smile reached his eyes. "Okay, sissy."

I turned to face the others. Jada, armed with a rifle, was standing with the guys, ready to walk. "Ready? There's room for one more," I asked Jada, but she turned to Stacey, Trevor's sister, who was watching with wide eyes.

"You go ahead and go."

"No, that's okay. I'll walk with Trevor," Stacey replied, taking hold of her M-16.

"Go on, sis," Trevor interrupted. "I'll be there in a few minutes. You go on."
