The children had long since finished their dinner when their fathers finally joined them. The younger siblings were oblivious to their fathers' unease but the elder children kept giving them concerned expressions.
Arvin and the others did their best to keep up a steady conversation as if they were completely relaxed.
It wasn't just the younger children that seemed to be oblivious to the fathers. Hisoka was staring down at his plate of uneaten food. Adelaide took his hand, squeezing it gently, causing him to look up.
"Are you okay?" she asked.
"Just tired," he lied. His eyes darted away from hers, landing on Talas instead. Immediately, he looked away again. He didn't want to think about the boy. "I might go to bed."
It was clear from Adelaide's expression that she would have liked to join him but he didn't give her the option. Instead, he got to his feet and left the room without even wishing her goodnight.
