"Bae!" Maindor?d? exclaimed as the Kumari climbed down from the carriage to greet her aunt.
"Hello aunt," Bae replied.
The Dixian elder wrapped an arm around Bae's shoulder and led her through the door and down the stairs into the city beneath.
"We have much to discuss, Kumari," Maindor?d? said in a hushed tone.
The internal walls of the catacombs were littered with caves, their occupants stepping out to witness the Kumari's arrival. Maindor?d? waved happily at her tribespeople as she walked in step with Bae.
"There's been word from Laoshi," she said, the exuberant expression on her face not matching her tone. "Rumours among the Ren. They say the Laoshian Ren are in revolt and my sister, Ji is killing all those who do not renounce their allegiance to the Kumari."
"What?" Bae's step faltered.
"Keep walking, dear. Don't let them see," Princess Maindor?d? said softly.
"She tried to have Talas assassinated."
