Athena was awakened by a terrible screeching noise and started up in terror before she realised it was the baby bird. She was so fuddled by sleep it took her a moment to pull herself together sufficiently to remember where the food was and how to administer it. She cradled the baby and fed it a gobbet of meat, terrified that she would poke it too hard or too far into its beak or, worse still, poke it in the eye and blind it. She was just reaching for another piece when Demeter rushed into the room, clutching the baby Persephone. "Oh my God, what is it? Are you all right?"
Athena broke off from her task and the baby bird set up the dreadful raucous cry again. "It's Nyctimene. She's hungry."
"Bloody hell. Is that normal for it to make that much noise? Are you sure it's all right? It's not dying is it?"
