Chapter 33

Nyctimene opened her eyes. They were a rich, living gold and so bright they almost seemed to be lit from within. Athena couldn't tear her gaze away. She looked into them and felt as if she were falling. Nyctimene gazed back. The two of them stayed locked together and Athena was overwhelmed by a strange, diffuse joy. Then Nyctimene spoke.

The sound she made was a sort of rasping chirrup. But the thought was crystal clear I see you. Athena held her breath. She was too moved to speak. She sent the thought. I see you too, Nyctimene.

Then, as if a switch had been clicked, Nyctimene opened her beak and let out her raucous hungry cry. It broke the spell.

"All right, Nyctimene. You don't have to shout. I'll feed you straight away."

The little bird quietened immediately and watched her trustingly as she reached into the bag of meat and tweezed out a piece.

A few minutes later Athena heard Artemis call up the stairs. "Athena, are you there? I've got something to show you."
