A few days later...
(In Gabriel's room)
Gabriel asked Ruby where his parents were. Ruby then told him that they had just left a few minutes ago.
Gabriel smiled. "Shall we play cards then?"
Ruby sighed, "I'm not in the mood."
"Look, I'm not a regular eight year old."
"Then what? You're an extraordinary one?" Ruby laughed.
Gabriel smiled. "If you don't want to play, why don't we talk about your life?"
"There's nothing interesting about it. What do you wanna know?"
"Have you ever loved anyone?"
Ruby smirked. "I see. You have someone you like too."
Gabriel responded, "Would you mind sharing your experience?"
"I can't. You won't understand it."
Gabriel frowned. "Why not?"
"I don't want to." Ruby smirked.
"You're really think I'm that childish don't you?"
"Well, you are a child."
"Are you really not going to tell me? You don't have to tell me the details."
"Okay, fine! Stop nagging me!"
Gabriel smirked. "Go on."
Ruby then told him that she was once in loved with Mateo, Mia's husband. When she was in middle school, she fell for him because he defended her when she was being bullied. Then around eight years later, she was informed that Mateo already had a fiancé. As soon as she heard that, Ruby cried everyday. It was simultaneously heartbreaking and exasperating.
Gabriel patted her shoulder. "I never knew that someone has already rejected you, I'm sorry to hear that."
Ruby folded her arms. "I wasn't rejected you idiot!"
"Well, isn't that the same?"
"It's not! I didn't confess to him."
Gabriel sighed, "Too bad because I have a chance with mine."
"Go and tell me yours. Who's this unlucky woman that got your attention?" Ruby responded.
"She's isn't unlucky. Don't you know that I'm the prince of—"
Ruby rolled her eyes. "I know."
"Anyway, she promised to wait for me until I'm eighteen."
"How old is she?"
"The same as me, eight."
Ruby then told him that she didn't want to put his hopes down, but she didn't believe that promise would last since they are still young.
"What makes you think that childhood love won't last?"
"Your feelings and thoughts will change as you grow up. I'm just telling you all this because I don't want you to expect anything from her. She can change, Gabriel."
"Our feelings for each other won't."
Ruby scratched her head. "Then tell me, do you really know who Abigail is? Where she lives? Her birthday? Her secrets?"
Gabriel responded, "I don't..."
"That's why you have a lot of years to get to know her. Then you'll soon see if she really is worthy of your love."
"Are you telling me that she might not like me anymore?"
"That's right. You're still young, Gabriel. You can't get everything you want in life. Some things are just really meant to be in a you didn't expect it to be."
Gabriel furrowed his eyebrows. "I do understand everything, but I do hope your wrong."
"I'm a lot older than—"
"Your highness, the food is ready," a servant interrupted.
"Coming!" Gabriel responded.
Ruby smiled. "Seems like you're about to have supper."
"Care to join me?"
"If that's fine with you."
"Let's go. I'm starving."
