Peter was sitting up in his bed with the lamp on. It was 10:00 pm and Walker was still not home. Karen noticed that Peter was still up when she went to go check on him.
"Peter honey, you still awake?" asked Karen.
"Yes mom," said Peter.
Karen walks in and sits on the end of his bed.
"What's the matter honey?" asked Karen.
"I'm worried about dad, I hope he is alright," said Peter.
"I know, I worry about him a lot when they ask him to go," said Karen.
"I hope he is going to be alright," said Peter.
"Me too honey," said Karen.
While on the rez, cops were surrounding Red Blueclouds place, and they could hear her screaming and him yelling. They rushed in, Walker grabbed him from behind and choked hold him to the ground.
"What is wrong with you, hitting your wife!" yelled Walker.
"She's messing around on me man, I didn't mean to hurt her," said Red Bluecloud.
Walker looked over towards her and she was bleeding from her face, she went over and picked up her baby and sat down in the rocking chair. Then they put her and the baby in the ambulance and took her to the hospital.
A police officer came out of the house.
"Its a mess in there, they've been partying all night, when they ran out of beer they started drinking out of hairspray bottles filling them halfway with red bull, rough night," said the police officer.
"That is crazy," said Walker.
"Yes it is, hey I heard you have Peter Wolf, how's he doing? I'm glad you got him away from this place," said the police officer.
"Oh he is doing good, he's loving it at my place, but I know my uncle is going to bring him here, for pow wows, hand drums songs, he's already going to school here," said Walker.
"I mean all that stuff is good, but he does not need to come back here, he is good where he is at," said the police officer.
"Yes, but this is his home, he knows what it's like here, he's seen it when we drive him to school, a lot of drunk Indians on the sidewalks, he knows," said Walker.
"This is true, maybe he'll be the one to try and make it better, once the kids around here see how good he has it, then maybe it will change them and make them want to change their lifestyle because he is the last of his generation of traditional full-bloods," said the police officer.
"True," said Walker.
"Well thank you for coming out, we needed extra help, we'll take him in and let him sit in jail," said the police officer.
"Your welcome, I'm always happy to help you guys, you guys are my friends," said Walker.
"Thank you again, we'll see you later?" asked the police officer.
"Yes, you will," said Walker driving away.
Peter finally fell asleep so Karen turned his lamp off and went downstairs to sit on the couch and wait for Walker to come home. She started reading a book when she saw headlights pull up. She got up and opened the door and it was Walker.
"Oh sweetie I am glad your home and safe," said Karen hugging Walker.
"Yes I'm alright, sweetheart you didn't have to wait up for me," smiled Walker.
"I know, but I always do, Peter finally went to sleep, he couldn't sleep either," said Karen.
"Awww, thank you guys for worrying, now we can all go to bed," smiled Walker.
So they both went upstairs and went to bed. Next morning, the rooster was crowing, Peter herd it and got up and opened his curtains and looked out the window and saw Walker's truck, so he ran downstairs.
"Dad," said Peter walking to the table and hugged him.
"Hey, told you I would be back, your mother said you were up around ten o'clock or so," said Walker.
"Yes I was, I was worried about you," said Peter.
"Well thank you, sit down and eat some breakfast before you go to school," said Walker.
"Okay," said Peter sitting down.
Eagle Bear and Walker were reading the newspaper and drinking coffee. Karen sat down and started eating and drinking coffee as well.
"It's 7:00 am you better run up and get dressed for school, don't want to be late on your second day of school," said Karen.
"Yeah," said Peter drinking his orange juice and running upstairs.
He got dressed and made sure he had everything before he left the house. Walker went out to start the truck.
"Come on sweetheart your dad has the truck started," said Karen.
"I'm coming," Peter running down the stairs.
So they both walked out of the house and got in Walker's pick up and they drove him to the bus stop.
"Have a good day son, " said Karen.
"Thanks, mom, I will," said Peter walking to the bus stop.
When he arrived at the bust stop, he saw Haskel and Martha walking towards the bus stop. Jesse nudges Peter out of the way.
"Hey what's your problem?" asked Peter.
"Nothing, what's your problem, (waschia) "white," said Jesse.
"I'm not white," said Peter.
"Yes you are, you are an apple, red on the outside white on the inside. Coming from that direction you are a white man, you don't belong here," said Jesse.
"I belong here as much as you do, just because I was not raised here, I'm still Indian, I'm more Indian than you, remember you came back here also, you have not been here that long and you already think you know everything, well you don't," said Peter.
"Oh no, come on," said Haskel.
"Just wait till we get to high school, I'll be bigger than you," said Jesse.
"We already are in high school, were Juniors," said Peter.
"Just wait, your day will come," smiled Jesse.
"Hey, you leave him alone Jesse," said Haskel.
"Whatever, you won't always have them to protect your back," whispered Jesse.
Then the bus came. They all go on the bus and sat down.
"Don't mind him, he's all talk and no show," said Haskel.
"It did not seem like it," said Peter.
"Well he is, just because he's the one that thinks we should get back to our roots and our traditions, but he's only been here a week and he thinks he already owns this place and knows everything, but he does not," said Martha.
So the bus drove up to the school and everybody got off the bus and walked to their classrooms and started their school work. Each of the students got up and shared their stories that they have been working on. Then the bell rang for lunch. They all went to the cafeteria and sat down and started eating. Then they herd laughing and talking. So Martha looked behind her and saw Jesse and his buddies laughing and smiling.
"Jerks, they are probably talking about us," said Martha.
"Ah pay no attention to them, they are just talking about themselves mainly," said Haskel.
While they were eating, two elders came to the cafeteria, they were dressed in their traditional clothing. The principal made an announcement.
"We know that there are two students here that came back home not too long ago, we would like to give you two a hand, so please Peter and Jesse, please stand up. Everybody give them a round of applause, and welcoming them back home, " said the Principal.
They both stood up and everybody clapped for them. They remained standing.
"Yes welcome home, now the elders are here because there is only one that is qualified to sit with the elders, there is one that knows the language and is fluent, and knows about mother earth and the history of our people, and there is one that knows the stories, and there is one who would do anything for his people and community," said the principal.
Jesse smiled and smirked at Peter, Peter just looked back at the principal. Jesse thought they were talking about him. But they were not.
One of the elders started talking Lakota, Peter understood what he was saying but Jesse did not, he pretended he understood what the elder was saying. So Peter stepped up to the elder, the elder started talking to him in Lakota. Then he gave Peter a medicine pouch and put it over his head like a necklace.
"Black Elk said "Peace comes within the souls of men when they realize their oneness with the Universe when they realize it is everywhere, it is within each one of us," quoted the elder.
The other elder said "When you were born, you cried, but the world rejoiced. Now go. Live your life honoring our ways, and when you return to the Great Spirit, the world will cry and you will rejoice."
"What did they say?" asked Jesse getting angry.
"Nothing you need to worry about," smiled Martha knowing Peter was picked to sit among the elders.
