"You seem quiet. Are you ok?" He asked as he came to a stop at the stop sign.
I didn't want him to know the weird side of me because I didn't think it was the right time.
"I'm fine. I'm just thinking how swimming is a great exercise and I see why it helps people so much." I said looking over at him.
Josh smiled softly and asked "So, your parents are coming already?"
I said "I think they will come tomorrow or Sunday. They don't know yet."
Josh laughed and I asked "What's so funny?"
He laughed before saying "What if they don't trust you and pop up tonight?"
I said "I don't think so."
He laughed a little more and I said "I'm not doing nothing bad anyways."
Josh said "They don't even know about us though."
I laughed and said "Oh. I see you're nervous about meeting them."
Josh changed the subject and said "You haven't met mine completing."
I widen my eyes but I relaxed quickly. "I already met your dad and I like him."
"Their both pretty cool but very busy people." He informed me.
"Good! That way I don't meet your mom." I said with alot of relief.
"Why don't we meet them now?" He sarcastically asked.
"I can't." I said biting the inside of my lip.
Josh frowned and asked "Why not?"
I gazed at him how he already had forgotten about the project. "Did you forget about the project that's due like this Monday?" I asked unbelievably.
Josh gushed and said "This Monday! Oh man. It's ok we still have enough time. Don't worry we got this."
He gave me so much comfort and I said "I know we can do this."
Josh raised his eyebrows and said "Wow! I love the confidence in your tone."
I shrugged in a swag way but he just made it feel like that.
"We can get started now?" He suggested but he knew I wouldn't accept.
I pouted and said "I'm to tired and you need to take care of your cut."
Josh came to a stop in front of my house and looked down at it. "I'm feeling better."
I leaned in for a kiss and whispered "Doesn't matter. Get a check up and stop by tomorrow."
Josh glanced at my lips with a pout and showed me his index finger. I kissed him one more time before getting off his car. He rolled the windows down and yelled "I LOVE YOU, WREN!"
I laughed and dropped my keys on the floor. When I looked back he was already driving away and I yelled back "I LOVE YOU, JOSH!" I picked up my keys and went inside the house. I couldn't stop smiling to how amazing he made me feel and he didn't seem to disappoint me at all. Yet, I feel like I would by revealing the truth side of me and I didn't want to tell him.
I heard my phone ring, the next day and I looked at the screen. It was Josh and he was already on his way to my house. I got up quickly and headed to the bathroom. I changed and went downstairs. I opened the door and he had a bag full of random school materials.
"What's in it?" I asked with alot of curiosity.
Josh answered "I don't know but I hope it's useful."
We both laughed at his answer and we looked inside of it. "Should be." I assured him.
"Remind me why we signed up for Spanish class?" I asked wanting to give up in building this house.
Josh said "If we want to marry in a country that Spanish is spoken. We need to know how say yes in Spanish which is "Si!"
"Isn't it "Acepto?" I asked very confused now.
Josh smiled really big and asked for confirmation "Are you trying to say that you do accept marrying me?"
"Maybe." I said shyly.
Josh clapped his hands and asked "Really?!"
I snapped my fingers and said "We need to focus and get this done."
Josh walked over to me and said "I can't. Now, I'm in love with this idea."
I giggled and said "Josh we got a lifetime to think about this."
He nodded his head sideways and said "Nope it's so clear like the sea."
I looked down at his arm and asked "How's your arm?"
He looked down at it and said "It doesn't hurt that much anymore but it will. Once, it starts healing and closing up again."
I thought about maybe if it was the right time to tell him but I doubted it.
Josh walked away and said "Don't worry, though. I should be doing ok in no time."
I gave him a soft smile and he got some construction paper. I got some fake furniture and markers. We looked around for card board and glue. Then we did our measurements and started to build up this big home.
"We need to let it dry up a bit." He said kneeling down to see if it was elevated.
I turned back as I heard the door close and my parents walked in. My mother put her purse down and looked over at Josh. My dad saw the house being over the table and examined it more than Josh.
"Who is this?" Mother asked.
I said "Josh is my partner in this project for Spanish class."
Dad came closer to look at it and asked "Partners or Couples?"
My mother said "Couples I see with the silence that you guys have created."
"Is my aunt ok now?" I asked changing the subject.
Dad said "She's feeling so much better but is in recovery."
Josh said "I have already met you sir but I hadn't had the chance to meet you ma'am."
He held out his hand to shake her hand and she shaked it. "You better make her get a A in the class or you'll see." She said.
"Mom!" I embarrassing said.
Josh blushed and said "I'm sure we'll get the highest grade."
"Josh!" I gushed at his confidence but he did get a good grade in everything he did.
My dad interrupted by saying "The house is looking good. Maybe, I'll move in here with you guys."
I held the top of my nose with my fingers and took a deep breath.
"Well, hurry up! Get to work, Wren!" Mom clapped her hands for us to get to work.
"Why don't you guys help?" I asked smirking.
"No you both need to do it on your own! We are taking a nap." She said as she left to go upstairs with dad.
Josh said "I think they like me."
I glanced back at him and said "I can't believe you."
He nodded his head and said "Well, you better believe it."
I chuckled and we continued our work. After, awhile his phone began to ring and it was his parents. I went to the bathroom so he could talk to them more comfortably. When, I got out he was already done talking to them.
"I have to go." He said packing up the items from the table.
I stopped him and said "If you have to go now then go."
Josh asked "Why don't you come with me?"
"Maybe, next time." I said.
Josh held my hand and asked "Why not?"
I said "My parents are home and I'm sure they want to tell me stuff."
Josh pulled me into a hug and said "I'll come tomorrow to finish."
"We're almost done. Don't worry about it." I said trying to make him relax.
"I love you, Wren. Don't miss me like I'll miss you." He said as he walked towards the door.
"What? Why?" I asked trying understand.
"Then I'll feel bad for not making you come with me." He said looking back at me.
I rolled my eyes and said "Bye, Josh! I love you."
He left and I went upstairs to take a nap. I needed a break from all this work and knowing that my parents were asleep gave me motivation.
"Wren? Get up. Come and eat." Mom said as she turned on the lights from my room. I sat up and nodded my head. I went downstairs and joined them at the dining table.
"I trust him and you." She simply just said as I took my first bite.
I looked over at her and said "We didn't do nothing bad. We just went on dates and that's it."
Dad gave assurances to her by saying "I met him and he seems pretty nice."
I raised my eyebrows in shock as I didn't think he would defend him but he did. Instead of him being jealous it was mom but knowing he liked him made me feel happy. She looked at dad with a questionable face expression.
I said "I don't know why but I think he's important."
She glanced back at me with the same expression.
Dad asked "You dreamed of him again?"
I nodded my head and said "They both came true."
Mom asked "Bad dreams?"
I nodded my head slowly and she informed me "I don't think this will end good."
Mothers were always right and that scared me.
Dad said to mom "Why are you telling her that? Can't you see this is already difficult and you're over here adding more fire."
She shrugged and said "I'm just warning her before she goes on with this."
I said "Honestly, right before I met him I had this weird sensation about him and I don't know what it was or is."
Dad asked "How could this end bad? He seems different than everyone else around leaving."
I gazed at mom's movements and she spoke again "I just know. Don't questioned me."
I said "I'm not but I believe you. Yet, I don't want this to end."
She patted my hand and said "He's special but I don't know how. Cherish him and let's see what comes after."
Dad said "No don't. I don't want to see him hurt you in any way."
I said "Before, meeting him I made my mind of helping him. Now, I'm in this for good and I'm not leaving."
He sighed and said "Ok do what you want."
I didn't even want to eat as I got confirmation about something suspicious about him. I loved Josh so much that I didn't want him to move or hurt me.
Mom saw me poking my food with the fork and said "Sooner or later, the truth will be known. So, don't worry and just enjoy life."
She stood up and so did dad. They left to go outside and I went back to the project. I put sticky notes on the furniture with the correct Spanish words. I made my way to the couch after I was finally done with the house. I looked at the time, it was already 9:09 P.M. and my parents weren't home yet. I turned on the tv and saw baseball was on. I tried changing the channel but the remote control wouldn't work. I sighed in frustration and banged it against my other hand to see if it would work.
"Ugh! Why aren't you working?" I asked the remote control and looked up at the screen.
The man shouted on the television "STRIKE THREE AND YOU'RE OUT!"
I frowned as I repeated a couple of times "Strike three and you're out?"
I blinked my eyes a couple of times and my parents finally got home. I turned to look at them to see if they were ok.
"Watching baseball?" Mom asked.
I glanced back at the television but it was done. I turned it off and said "I could never change the channel."
"Weird? I changed the batteries the other day you helped me with the groceries." Dad said before going upstairs to sleep.
Mom said "The control is old. Maybe, it's that."
She went upstairs and it became silent. I looked at my phone and no goodnight text from Josh. I smiled and said "I'll go to sleep now. So, that way I can wake up to a goodnight and good morning text."
I took a bath before going to sleep to relax of all the tension that house caused me.
I turned to my side and hid under the blanket. I could feel the sun trying to surpass my eyelids but I was trying to avoid it. I sticked my hand out and looked for my phone with my touch. Whenever, I found it, I brought it under the blanket with me but there was no message on the screen. I thought about maybe he was very busy with his family or he had no signal. I didn't want to worry about him so I lied to myself. I closed my eyes again and slept for another few hours.
"Wren, it's already 11 A.M. you need to get up and eat breakfast." Mom said pulling the covers off my body.
"I'm not hungry." I said pouting.
She asked "Why did he break your heart?"
I sat up and immediately answered "NO."
She turned around and said "Come on get out of bed."
I looked towards my window and that questioned roamed in my brain for awhile. To be honest it worried me and I didn't like the feeling. I stood up and headed to the shower. I quickly got out and headed downstairs to eat. As I ate I looked at the screen but no message was still there.
"The house looks really good." Dad distracted me with his complements which made it feel like he was lying to me.
"Maybe, Josh was right. Maybe, you guys will get the highest grade out of everyone else." Mom informed me.
I looked back at the house and admired it. I fell in love with the idea and it made me chuckle. I turned back to take a bite out of my pancake and nodded my head. It was delicious and I thought I wasn't hungry.
"So, you done?" Dad asked.
I glanced at him and answered "I am but I have to study all these words."
"We'll be going out to forget about the bills. Will you join us or you'll stay to study?" She asked.
I said "I'm staying to study. Thanks anyways."
Next thing you know I was completely alone in the house and it just made me think about Josh only. It was so hard to study when he hadn't even texted me. I grabbed my phone and texted him.
"Where are you? I miss you." I sent him the message.
I waited and waited for a response but nothing happened. Now, it felt like an emergency so I called him. However, he didn't pick up the call and I started to walk in circles. My hands began to sweat and I got really inpatient. After, a few hours passed he finally texted me and I didn't know how to feel.
Josh only stated "Hey, I was sleeping. Sorry, I'll see you tomorrow at school."
I frowned my eyebrows and wondered about him. Atleast, I knew he was ok and I could relax now.
I got up before the alarm even went off because I was so nervous for the presentation. Also, I was so anxious to see Josh. It felt like I hadn't seen him in years and it was killing me inside. I kept looking out the window to see when he would pull up in the drive through. I headed downstairs with the house and went outside. I waited for him and began to think if he would even come. The time he usually came already had passed and he wasn't here still. My heart jumped everytime I saw a car pass by thinking it was him. I sighed and took out my phone to call him. I glanced one more time before calling him and he pulled up. I rushed to his car and put the house in the back seat. I frowned a little how he didn't even help to open the door or get off the car. I hopped onto the passenger seat and looked at him. Honestly, my Josh didn't look to good and I couldn't help but stare at him.
"Are you ok?" I asked very worried about him.
Josh nodded his head and said "Yeah, I just didn't get enough sleep."
I glanced away as I didn't understand if he was lying to me or what was going on.
"Oh." I said making it awkward.
Josh started to drive and said "My parents kept me really busy because they left again this morning."
I said "Oh they drained you out with so many things."
Josh said "Yeah, I think that's what it is."
The background music was pretty sad and I was understanding the lyrics very well. I didn't know why he was lying but I didn't like it. I didn't want to ever argue with him but he just gave me so much happiness. I didn't want to ruin the definition of what he meant to me.
Josh said "The house came out really good."
"Yeah but did you study the words?" I asked concerned.
"Of course." He said with a soft smile.
Even his smile was off and I worried about it. We arrived to school and we took it to Spanish class. He fixed the furniture that had moved around during the car ride and fixed some sticky notes that fell. I examined his body movements and observed him. We left the class and we left different directions. I couldn't get these thoughts out of my head but I knew I had to before presentation.
He started the presentation with "Esta es la casa." (This is the house)
I ended the presentation with "Gracias, por escucharnos." (Thank you, for listening)
Everyone clapped for us and the teacher seemed satisfied. I looked over at Josh and he was smiling really big. It seemed like he was ok and I felt myself letting go of old feelings. We took a seat and listened to our classmates. After, class was over Josh waited for me outside the classroom.
"Is everything ok?" I asked him again.
Josh smiled and put his arm around my shoulder. "You know what? I feel amazing. This project got me really excited and energetic."
I raised my eyebrows as I couldn't believe what he was saying but he looked really good. I hugged him back but heard yelling in the hallway. "No touching!" A teacher yelled at us from down the hall.
I pouted and let go.
Josh sighed and said "I can't wait to graduate."
I stayed quiet because I didn't want to make him nervous.
He turned to look at me and asked "Are you ok?"
I nodded my head and he gave me look of confession.
"Josh!" Manuel called him out.
I took the opportunity to leave his side and go to the restroom. I was worried more for his future than mine. Atleast, I knew what I was going for but what about him?
