"What the hell do you want, Mom?" I hear Lily's voice, one that I haven't heard in a while. I slowly step up onto the toilet, so that Lily won't know I'm in the bathroom with her.
I can see her run her fingers through her red hair in frustration through the crack in the door. Her face is filled with heavy makeup like I've never seen before. The most I used to see her wear was mascara, lip gloss, and a little blush.
It's crazy how fast people can change.
Or maybe she was always like this and I never noticed.
"I don't care what you do. Strip him of all his assets. Drain his pockets. Just make sure he pays," she growls into her phone. She pauses listening for her mother's response.
"That asshole doesn't get to be happy, mom. Why can't you see that? He left us for some bitch. They think they can just go on with their lives and have a family. Not on my watch. So, you tell the lawyer you want everything and you leave him with nothing."
I almost fall of the toilet seat at the shock of Lily shrieking at her mother through the phone. She pauses for a second, looking around the bathroom. I hold my breath, hoping she didn't hear me.
When she doesn't find me, she goes back to talking on the phone.
"You know. Now I see why dad left you. Your an idiot and you can never see what's clearly right in front of you. He's not coming back, so stop hoping for it. He cheated on you and you still want to be with him?"
While her mom answers her, I see a tear slide down her face, but she quickly wipes it away.
"Just sign the papers and be done with him. He didn't care what happened to us when he left, so we shouldn't care what happens to him once he has nothing, but his new wife to support him." She hangs up the call.
I watch her look at herself in the mirror. She blinks her tears away and plasters on a fake smile before walking out the bathroom door.
Once I'm sure she's gone, I breathe out a sigh and get off the toilet. I leave the stall, but in the next second, the bathroom door slams back open, making me jump in surprise when I see Lily enter.
My face is frozen in shock like hers, but she quickly switches it to anger.
"You heard everything. Have anything to say," she growls out at me.
"I didn't hear anything," I lie. It wasn't my place to comfort her or talk to her about what she's going through anymore. I feel horrible that I couldn't do it while we were friends, but it's not my place anymore.
"Your lying. Girls like you always have something to tell me after hearing my story about how my father left me. You don't want to say sorry for your lost? That I didn't need him anyway or that he didn't deserve me? Or maybe that I shouldn't let my daddy issues influence me to do dumb things like sleep with someone my best friend liked."
I didn't know what to say to be honest. Behind her anger I could see hurt.
I don't know this Lily. I don't know how to approach her or talk to her. I'm at a lost for words.
With the other girls, I knew them. I knew how they would react to certain things and that's why I was ok with talking about their problems.
With Lily, we aren't friends and I don't know her situation. I can't talk to her and act like I understand her situation. Plus, it's not a job for me to do. If she needs someone to talk to, she can go to her new friends.
"We're not friends. I don't have anything to say," I tell her in a smooth tone.
"So now you think you can act high and mighty because you have a perfect life. You have friends that you stole, a loving family, and the perfect boyfriend. How is it going with you and Chester anyways?" She puts on a smirk that I can't tell what the meaning behind it is. Her tone was mocking at the words perfect boyfriend.
"Honestly, I don't have time to deal with your bullshit. You want someone to use as a punching bag? Go find someone else," I tell her and try to get past her to the bathroom door.
She blocks my way and lets loose a loud chuckle.
"Goodness, Spencer. Are you that blind? I thought Sky was blind when we were friends and she kept taking me back everytime I did something stupid, but your worse than her."
I walk around her, but before I could exit, she says something that runs a chill down my spine.
"Have you guys had sex yet? I'll tell you, you won't want to leave him after you have. If your not careful, you'll become addicted. I almost did." I pause in my steps, but I don't turn around to see her face.
A cold giggle leaves her throat.
"I always saw Chester with other girls and they always stuck to him like leeches. I always wondered what was so wonderful about him that girls always wanted to stay with him. He's a jerk and isn't close to being the perfect boyfriend. So, I figured I'd give him a try and find out for myself. After that one night, I understood."
I turn around to face her and see a huge grin on her face. I hide all expression in my face and wait for her to finish her rant.
"Oh, he's definitely better than Max. Good thing you didn't waste your time with him and skipped to the good stuff." She plays with her nails and waits for a reaction from me.
"I understand you need to mess with someone else to distract yourself from your own problems. That's fine. Do you have anything else to say," I asked her. No matter how much I'm fuming inside, I keep my expression emotionless and I stay calm.
Her face turns red in anger.
"Just warning you about your boyfriend. Remember, he was Max's best friend before he was your boyfriend. He's still the same person he was before." She walks out of the bathroom, bumping into my shoulder on the way out.
I walk to my first period half an hour late. My ears are boiling with rage, but I try to ignore it. Her words swim in my head and I try to push them away.
I shouldn't listen to her. I trust Chester and his past doesn't matter. What matter is what happens now and he hasn't done anything to make him untrustworthy since we've been together.
But that's the same thing I thought about Max and Ryan.
