Chapter 3

Sara hanging the last bed sheet she washed on the clothesline when she caught a glimpse of Jon finishing up his work. She noticed that he was shirtless and his back was towards her. She noticed how his muscles moved and felt warmth in her face, she placed a hand on her cheek and it was warm to the touch. Sara then figured out she was blushing and instantly hid behind the bed sheets. She was trying to cool down when Isabella came up to her and notice Sara acting strange "Are you ok?" she asked which snapped Sara out of her thoughts.

"I'm fine why do you ask?" Sara responded and Isabella looked behind her and then looked back at her. That made Sara looked behind her as well but didn't see anyone there. "Because you look flustered" Isabella said with a smile.

"I don't know what you are talking about" Sara said and started to walk away from Isabella. "Denial is the first step!" Isabella shouted and Sara responded back saying "I cannot hear you!" which caused Isabella to giggle.

Sara came back inside the house and heard a commotion upstairs and went to see what was going on. She saw that Mary and Elizabeth were having a fight and Sara got in the middle to break it up "What's going on here?!" Sara shouted and looked at both Mary and Elizabeth.

"Mary was bossing me and Emily around to clean her room while she did nothing" Elizabeth complained and Sara sighed and looked at Mary.

Mary didn't say anything and crossed her arms over her chest as if she did nothing wrong. Sara didn't want to argue with anyone but she knew Mary needed to be stopped "Mary why are you doing this?" Sara asked but Mary didn't respond.

"We should be getting ready for tonight anyone who wants to come they can" then Sara looked directly at Mary "Those who don't can stay at home" Sara went into her room to change her clothes.

Everyone else just stood in the hallway contemplating whether or not they should go instead of continuing to clean their rooms they all headed downstairs and begun organizing the kitchen and the main room. Sara was finishing changing her clothes which was a plain beige dress and her hair was left open. She went downstairs and saw everyone sitting "I take it none of you are coming" Sara said and Isabella shook her head.

"That's fine" Sara and headed out but Isabella stopped her at the door "How are you gonna be able to stand and watch?" Isabella said and Sara didn't turn around.

"It's something that you wouldn't understand" Sara responded and a single tear fell from her face as she left the house. Isabella and the rest of the ladies didn't understand what she said and were confused.

"What did she mean by that?" Emily asked, Isabella just shook her head "The only person who probably knew was Eve" she said.

"No one really knew Sara when she came to the coven and she didn't really connect with anyone" Isabella continued to say.

"Maybe she has a past" Elizabeth and Isabella shrugged her shoulders "Could be but who knows" Isabella responded and closed the door.

Sara walked down the road that led to the center square, there was already a gathering of people screaming and shouting. Sara could see the pyre where the woman would be executed still getting built. As Sara walked through the crowd she could feel people glancing her way which made people uncomfortable. "So you decided to show" she heard a familiar voice and looked around to see the direction it was coming from.

Then she saw the young man from earlier when she went to see the shrief about the papers. "My name is James" the young man said "Sara" she replied "But you already knew that" Sara added which made James chuckle "That I did" he said.

"It's quite an event" Sara said as they both stepped away from the crowd and watch from a safe distance. "It is but I honestly don't see a point to it" James said which caught Sara off guard.

She regained her composure right away "It's to show that Salem will not tolerate witchcraft and also to show others what happens if they do" Sara said and James shot her a look.

"I assume you have attended these events where you are from" James probed but Sara read the subtle hints that James was throwing at her.

"We didn't have much of these where I am from" Sara responded as she directed her gaze at the crowd and her face remained expressionless.

"How did they deal with it?" James asked genuinely and Sara continued looking at the crowd. "The woman were mutilated and then hanged" Sara said "After a couple of women were executed like that there wasn't another incident ever again" Sara also said and James had a look of horror on his face.

Sara then spotted Jon and walked over to where he was leaving James alone. He stood there for a few minutes and then regained his composure and headed to the mayor's residency.

Mayor Sybil was sitting at his desk when a woman walked in and stood beside him "It's time dear" the woman said and Mayor Sybil sighed. He looked out the window and saw the large gathering where the pyre.

There was a knock on the door "Come in" Mayor Sybil said and Sebastian entered. The woman took her leave and closed the door behind her leaving Mayor Sybil and Sebastian alone in the room.

"James has informed me that Sara came alone" Sebastian said and Mayor Sybil reclined back in his chair. "Interesting" the mayor said and looked out the window again and saw Sara talking to a man.

"Is that Jon?" Mayor Sybil said and Sebastian joined him at the window and saw Sara with the man. "Yes it is" he said and Mayor Sybil was jealous for some reason which made him confused with himself.

He continued to watch Sara from his window when both Mayor Sybil and Sebastian saw men dragging the accused out of the sheriff's building to the square. "It is time" Mayor Sybil said and both men left the room and proceeded to the square.
