Chapter 4

The next day, I ran all the way to school. I didn't even return Prof. Dog's 'Good morning, woof!' I was too scared to encounter Lady Jellyfish or Mr. Shark or any more scary tenants.

I isolated myself from everyone else in school like usual. They called it a problem. I didn't think it was a problem. It's not when it's convenient. For me, anyway.

Today, I heard whispers about me living in Aqua Chrysalis.

"Butterfly started living there? She probably fits in so well."

Hardly. I hate it there.

"I wonder if she made friends with the other tenants."

Friends? I made an enemy.

They stopped talking when they figured out I was listening. Typical.

I did my homework at a café near my school, making sure not to return to the building early. I really didn't want to encounter any of the tenants.

When I got back to Aqua Chrysalis, only Mr. Frog was in the lobby. He was busy with a checklist.

"Miss Butterfly," he suddenly said as I passed by.

I stopped.

"You were attacked by Lady Jellyfish last night, weren't you?"

Mr. Shark must have told him.

"Don't worry we won't let her do that again."

I sighed in relief.

"Oh yeah, Mr. Shark wants to have dinner with you."

"What?" I was in disbelief at the turn of events.

I wanted to decline the invitation, but Mr. Frog advised me not to. It seemed that he was afraid of Mr. Shark too.

A landlord afraid of his own tenant. I wonder how he even collects rent.

"You'd better not offend him. Watch what you say," Mr. Frog warned. "You don't want him to be your enemy now that Lady Jellyfish already has her sights set on you."

I was told to go to the 4th floor at dinner time. I would be visiting the shark's lair again. I shuddered.

Wait. He's a shark. Could he possibly be thinking of eating me?

Nah. He's human too. That would be cannibalism.

On the other hand, he could kill me.

My fears only grew worse.

I waited anxiously in my room and wondered how things turned out this way. All I wanted was to be left alone. I never wanted to be involved with anyone. Lady Jellyfish was so cruel for disturbing my peace.

I blinked as I relaxed on my bed. It's more convenient to be alone. Without anyone to worry about. Without anyone who will drag me down.

The butterflies appeared to be circling around me with their strange dance. It was strangely calming.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

Silence.

Of course. How can they answer when they can't speak?

I sighed. 5 minutes left. I decided to read a book.

Pure silence is bliss.

Once my short moment of peace ended, I rode the elevator. The doors opened and I was back at Mr. Shark's floor. The lights came from the aquariums. It was slightly dim. As I walked, the sharks in the large aquariums followed me with their hungry eyes. My palms were sweating like crazy. My feet wobbled as I took small steps.

There was a dinner table in the middle of the narrow carpeted room. A lovely table decorated with a floral centerpiece and white lace. Dinner was already served.

Like a phantom, Mr. Shark made his appearance. He was but a youth in his twenties with black hair and intimidating blue eyes. He was dressed formally for the occasion with a dark blue suit and a black tie.

And he spoke formally too, "How do you do, Miss Butterfly?"
