The Trial

A few days  after the arrest of Spade Drase a lawyer came to me with a subpoena.

Spade really has some pull on the court being able to get his trail in a week where usually it would take a month or 2 especially for a mere robbery case.

The lawyer's name is Harvey Edgeworth and I didn't have to dig deep to find out about him because he is this hotshot attorney with a near perfect record being able to get a not guilty verdict even in a case filled with evidence.

As the day of the trial arrives I was made to testify and as soon as he started the cross-examination it didn't  take long for me to see why he's so popular among lawyers.

"Isaac you say you saw Spade Drase commit the crime yes?"

"No but he came  and admitted to me as soon as he stole the money"

"How exactly did this happen?"

"As I was going home from the victim's home he talked to me in the back alley from a nearby building"

"Why would he do need to do that? The evidence here says the method of the crime was through hacking"

"I-"

"Let me change the question, are you certain it's Spade Drase who talked to you?

"Yes his voice and appearance matched the cctv footage"

"Your honor this case is flawed! Not only does the prosecution solely rely on this entry levelled officer but the testimony is also circumstantial. Not only is there no solid proof of my clients' presence in the said building but also any proof that the building itself has any relevance"

"Is a confession not evidence enough?! " I protested

"And this confession do you have proof of this other than your own testimony again?"

I was silent.

"You should know Mr. Trest there's only so far a testimony goes. Evidence that is what the court values above all and right now there is not one direct evidence pinning my client to the crime. I rest my case"

The rest of the case fell apart as soon as Edgeworth finished his cross-examination. The prosecutor was mediocre at most and he had no chance against Edgeworth who bent all his arguements and threw him off his game.

When the defence has not prepared and the prosecution was skilled you could only watch as everything start to seem staged and even when I prepared for all he had to say the way he spoke clearly, briefly and with such finesse made it seem like him bending the truth sound so convincing and damn it the judge truly was.

We are now coming to and end of this case and things are going badly because the verdict once  put down  cannot be changed because of the 5th Ammendment or No Double Jeopardy meaning a person cannot be subjected twice and with the trial starting this early the crucial evidence like the computer used to hack the account or trace of the stolen money cannot be presented.

As we reach the end of the trial it went just as expected. A verdict of not guilty and just like that Spade Drase was a free man in less than a month after his arrest.

Being extremely powerless in that trial I took a few minutes to sit down in a park near the courthouse to reorganise my thoughts.

Edgeworth then sat next to me.

"Interesting wasn't it"

"Should you really be talking to a witness?"

"Well the case is over and it's too late to plea for a mistrial so no harm"

"The building it was owned by Drase corporation, it was relevant"

"Oh was it?"

He then showed me a document saying the building was owned by some other company

"You sold the building? That's tampering with evidence! I can arrest you for that"

"Can you prove it though? It's interesting how you think speaking the truth is following the law. Listen Isaac do you know how I won cases with overwhelming evidence? I buried it with a whole lot of paperwork where the Prosecution ran out of time and lost the case"

"How dare you act so high and mighty after doing what you do "

"Do you know the trick to breaking the law Isaac? It's to make it look as if your following them"

"I can get you imprisoned for that"

"You can't Isaac, see everything is about rank! Think how differently this could have gone if you we're a higher ranked officer, I sure wouldn't be able to trash all you testimonies"

I then stood up

"It's true I can't in the state that I am right now but"

I then played a recorder in my phone "Do you know the trick to breaking the law Isaac? It's to make it look as if your following them"

"If I present this to your fellow lawyers I'm sure they'll be more than happy to tarnish your name"

I then walked away but Edgeworth stopped me

"Hahaha your truly a fascinating person Isaac no wonder Spade came to like you"

"You think you can talk your way out of this"

"Oh I'm not your free to do as you please but"

He then handed me a small piece of paper with an address and above it some Latin name Verum Iustitiae

"Consider it an invitation"

He said as he also walked away as if not caring about my threat to ruin his career

"You owe me!"

I shouted as he was slowly leaving and he stopped and grinned and went to his car.

Verum Iustitiae? Sounds like some sort of chant but as much as I'm curious I don't want anything to do with this assholes again.

To be able to play the court of law like a toy while doing whatever the hell you want and not getting punished for it is something that requires a lot of fame, power and intelligence and yet two people in this city does it so nonchalantly and even in times of pessure still keep calm, Harvey Edgeworth and Spade Drase who the hell are you?
