"Sydney, you got some on your cheek," Matt informed her, pointing at it.
"Where?" she wiped her cheek with her hand, but it only got more kernels to stick on her!
Matt chuckled, "Now you have a lot on your face! Let me take them off."
He reached out to her face and picked them one by one, throwing them aside. As he helped her clean her face, Sydney had been closing her eyes, shy about the very close distance that they had.
"It's alright now," he said, and when Sydney opened her eyes, she was surprised because his face was just some inches near hers!
It was the first time that she became that close with a guy. She stared at his handsome face, forgetting about the beauty of the round moon and the glittering sea behind him. She was stoned and didn't know what to do.
On the other hand, Matt stared at her __ eyes which reflected the bright moon. For him, she's cute, whether she's noisy or she's quiet. He smiled at her, saying, "Sydney… Are you thinking of kissing me?"
"Wh… What the heck, Matt!" she suddenly stood up, "I'm… I'm going to eat inside the tent!" holding her stick firmly, she went back inside the tent, and gave a glare at the laughing Matt before she finally closed the tent's zipper.
Sydney felt her heart beating so fast because of Matt. She was beet red and hoped that he didn't see her blushing face. She was so nervous when she saw him near her, 'Calm down, self. He's just an annoying guy…' she told herself many times to convince her panicking heart.
The next day, they all went back to their respective homes. And when Monday came, there was an after-class meeting for the Music Club.
"Alright, settle down!" the Music Club adviser and Music Teacher, Ms. Elle said in a loud voice as she faced the students of different grades who were sitting on the floor, "The inter-school concert will be in a few weeks. We have selected Sydney McKee from Junior High and Lenoir Hans from Senior High as representatives of our school. Everyone, clap your hands."
Sydney and Lenoir stood up and smiled at them as they gave them applause. After that, they sat on the floor again.
"Now, we will proceed to our elections. I'm sorry if I have been busy that we had our elections delayed," Ms. Elle explained, then she turned to the whiteboard, "We'll first vote for our new Music Club President. Any suggestions?"
Sydney raised her hand, "I vote for Lenoir as President."
Lenoir shot a look at Sydney and chuckled.
Ms. Elle wrote Lenoir's name on the board legibly, "Who else wants to vote…"
After a lot of seconds, no one raised their hand, so Olivet said, "I moved that the nomination be closed."
"I second the motion," one of the members said.
"Okay? Lenoir is the only one, so…" she encircled his name, "President Lenoir, come in front and lead the nominations."
He stood up, approached the teacher, and took the whiteboard marker from her.
"Alright, clubmates. The nomination for the Vice President position is now open. Raise your hand if you want to vote."
Olivet raised her hand, "I nominate Sydney McKee as Vice President of the Music Club."
Lenoir chuckled, feeling excited about it. In his mind, he's going to spend more time with her, "Alright. Sydney McKee," he then wrote her name on the board. He almost drew a heart on her name, but he stopped himself from doing it!
"Anyone else?" he asked.
And there was silence. Lenoir grinned since he was already looking forward to their future teamwork as President and Vice President of the Music Club.
"Is there's no one else, then Sydney is-"
"I nominate myself as Vice President!"
They turned their heads towards the open door and saw Matt smiling. "Sorry if I'm late. I was called by the Principal."
"Ah, there you are, Matt. Just in time, we're doing the elections. Sit down anywhere."
Matt panned his sight around the room, looking for Sydney. When he saw her dumbfounded expression, he grinned as he approached her.
Sitting cross-legged beside her, he whispered, "Hi, bestie," then winked at her.
Ever since the moonlight moment last Saturday, Sydney had become very conscious of him. She started avoiding his gazes, and sometimes he pretended not to notice him staring at her. Usually, she'd say 'What are you looking at, annoying guy?!' but with her heart ticking like a time bomb she couldn't act like that anymore.
"I'm… I'm not your bestie… Don't call me that," she stuttered as she whispered to him, too, "Olivet is my bestie…"
"But I shared with you my grilled corn last time. How can we not be besties…"
Sydney felt her cheeks turn hot, "I… No, that was…"
Their conversation was halted when Lenoir told the club members, "Who's in favor of Sydney, raise your hand," then he counted the number of hands that were raised.
Twelve.
He continued, "Who wants Matt to be the Vice President, don't raise your hand… I mean, raise your hand."
And when he counted the number of hands that were raised...
Twenty.
"Congratulations, Matt. You are the new Vice President…" Lenoir said as he erased Sydney's name on the board. He felt very disappointed, especially that he hated the guy who's going to be working with him as an authoritative figure in the club.
Matt stood up and approached Lenoir, saying in a low voice, "I hope you don't mind me being the Vice President, Mister President."
"Not at all. You are very welcome to be Music Club's Vice President," he offered to shake hands with him, "I haven't properly introduced myself. I'm Lenoir Hans, a Senior High student."
Matt shook hands with him, "I'm sure you have already heard of me. I'm Matt Duncan."
"Yeah, you were the one who removed Sydney from the Music Club," Lenoir gripped his hand a little more tightly due to annoyance.
"Ah, we've reconciled. We're close friends now," Matt also tightened his handshake on Lenoir, who was glaring at him. To mock him, he continued, "We even shared grilled corn while we were having a fun conversation on the beach last Saturday night."
As Lenoir heard him say that, he loosened his grip on him. He remembered that he was the one who was with her in the hallway last time.
If the two had been hanging out, Sydney might develop feelings for Matt, and it worried Lenoir very much.
Looks like he had to confess very soon.
