Chapter 28

"Don't be, I was so full of myself, I believed that I won't mess up. I won't make a mistake. Now, look at me! The universe must be punishing me for my arrogance. It's better if the patient's mother sues me for killing her daughter and I go to jail, it's much better."

The guy went quiet and thought of something to reply to that. After a few minutes, he spoke. "Look, I don't want to be seen as cruel, I guess this is a setback in your life."

"What?"

"I'm not cruel, I have a soul even if I look like this. But failing sometimes is okay, it opens up more opportunities for you and it makes more space for growth for a while. Make yourself better."

Scarlett went silent. That was smart. "Wow, you're way wiser than my former teachers and seniors."

He laughed. "It's nothing. I also had a setback like this once."

"You were a neurosurgeon?"

"No, my brother had got a girl pregnant, and she told him to take custody of the child instead. But then he died just five weeks later, and she told me to take custody of the child instead. I was willing to do so but later I panicked, I ran away from there then somehow joined a biker gang and now I run a pet center."

"Wow, that's sad."

"I know, I still remember where she lives, but I have no courage to go there and ask for forgiveness. I'm pretty sure she'll take a chair and throw it in my direction. I've also been secretly visiting my nephew, he's now 25 and married."

Scarlett smiled. "Thank you."

"You're welcome, I don't want someone to do the same thing as me. So do you want to go home? I can drop you there."

Scarlett felt it would be rude of her to refuse it. He felt like a friendly person and he won't do something wrong. She felt she can trust.

"Thank you, then."

She paid for both of them and tipped the bartender dude from the money she stole. He dropped her off at the nearest landmark near the building and rode away.

She somehow managed to swipe the keycard and clicked the button to open the lift. The alcohol was at last taking effect on her. Now she is never going to a club in the future.

She couldn't walk straight and her vision was getting a bit blurry. She slammed into the door and hit her head. "Oww." She mumbled and passed out.

The door opened by a tired Avery. "You've, at last, decided to come home."

No answer. "Did you pass out?"

No answer. "Okay, you've passed out." They threw Scarlett's shoes off and dragged her into the living room. They couldn't take her up to her room, so they decided to drop her leg.

"Now what should I do?" Avery mumbled and glanced at the couch. "Okay, I'll do that." Somehow, they managed to get Scarlett on the couch and placed a blanket on her. She started snoring and drooling, Avery looked at her in disgust.

The next morning Scarlett woke up with a huge headache. Ugh! I shouldn't have done that, she thought.

"Yeah, you shouldn't have done that." Avery nonchalantly said.

"Gahh! When did you come here?"

"Right now, drink this. It'll help." They gave Scarlett a cup.

"What's this?"

"It's for your headache. Well, at least you didn't throw up on the couch." She took a sip from it. The taste was bearable.

"What were you thinking?!"

"What?"

"You could've told us that you'll be dilly-dallying in a club, we couldn't reach you through the phone. We thought we had to call the police since you were kidnapped or something. I'm surprised that you are in one piece and at peace."

She smiled apologetically. "Sorry~"

Avery sighed. "Just don't do that ever again. I charged your phone when you were sleeping, and it seems like you got a message from an unknown number. It's an invitation for attending a funeral for probably your patient. It's tomorrow by the way."

"Oh. A great way to tell me I'm a murderer."

"You're not a murderer."

"I am one."

"Look don't beat yourself for it, stuff like this does happen, and stop repeating that stuff. It's getting annoying."

"I know."

"Just take this as an opportunity to grow yourself. To meet our former professors, they have gone through the same thing at least once. Also, Anastasia has gone to the airport along with Hunter and Margret. Something happened at their parents' home."

"Okay. What happened?"

"Can't say."

"Okay~ I'll go take a bath now."

The day of the funeral arrived. That patient's name was Kyra Hill. She was an artist and her family was just her mother.

The rest of her family had died in a fire a few years ago. And by the rest of the family, I literally mean the entire family. Yup, she had a sad life.

At the funeral, her mother, a few of her friends, and the people along with Scarlett during the failed surgery were present. They paid their respect and gave condolences to Kyra's mother and left.

Scarlett stayed there along with Kyra's mother even after everyone left. Both of them stared at the headstone in silence.

After a long time, Scarlett decided to apologize. "Ma'am I'm so sorry that I-"

"Don't be. It was my fault. She had been complaining about severe headaches every day, and I pulled out the shitty parenting card. I told her to ignore it since I get severe headaches as well, yet she doesn't see me complaining about it.

"Then I also told her the reason her head was hurting was because she had her eyes on the screen all day. Maybe if she decided to go outside, then the headaches would decrease. Then she started distancing from me and I yelled at her later. How stupid of me to ignore all the signs."

"Oh."

"I just realized because of my ignorance, I killed my daughter. Now I don't even have someone to rely on or look after, nobody to call my family. So don't keep telling yourself that it was your fault."

"But I'm still sorry that I failed the surgery."

Kyra's mother kindly smiled at her. "You are a smart girl."

"I know."

"My daughter and you would've been good friends." Yup, good friends with a ghost of an artist. Kyra's mother peered over Scarlett's shoulder. "And it looks like your friend has arrived."

"Eh?" Scarlett turned around and saw a tall figure standing there, which she identified as Anastasia. She waved at Scarlett and she waved back. "So I better get going then."

"Okay. Bye doctor."

"Bye, ma'am."
