The school was six miles from his house, but he didn’t mind. The cool morning air and brisk ride provided the perfect nerve tonic, allowing Luke to prepare his mind and focus on the task ahead. A fire ravaged within, growing faster with each peddle forward. Luke’s muscles burned and his bike screamed down the road as pent up emotion poured out. Luke was in a race he couldn’t afford to lose. He wouldn’t be caught.
Chemistry class and talking to Jill was Luke’s mission. He arrived early, making deliberate eye contact as soon as she walked in. Luke hadn’t seen Jill since the awkward meeting at The Jumping Bean, he didn’t care. He had to put all that behind him. Robby needed him to step up and come through. He had to put his fear aside. Luke needed to grow up fast.
“Jill, how’s it going?” Luke made the first move, feeling bold and empowered, a side of Luke that seldom showed. He was doing it for Robby. Luke was determined to save his brother.
