2 days of travel up one of the main motorways. This could have been shorter trvavel if it wasn't apocalypse out there. The roads are mostly routing through to nomadic companies or tribes. People whom have made home along highway, motorways and where ever there is a long stretch of protected road with two lanes. They are often cleared of infected ones and all left behind unused cars.
All the cars around here were recycled into housing along the road side. Truck containers being the hive of settlement travel stops. We drove here according to old mapping, this was called the M6 motorway. Roads like this have been reopened and are in full usage as they were before the threat of radiation and diseases. Just no longer bypasses, highways or motorways road. They are new settlement singular long length village for caravans companies. Road system of single lane use then the four or three lanes of the past.
According to historical information, this M6 carries from Scotland to London and was one of few motorways through to London. The M1 is also towards London and that one is old Roman road which carried the most infected out of London through to the rest of the country. There are certain road junctions that been blocked due to the plague creatures from that time. These creatures are still reinfecting lost caravan traders.
We made a long stop at trade settlement of what remains an old football stadium. There is a faded sun burnt sign that reads 'Banks stadium car park entrance'. The car park filled of converted cars, caravans and temporarily parked visitors like us.
Those whom walked around alone were low standard, daft folks asking to be mugged or strong individuals. Notable leaders of survivor groups were wary and have teams. This consists of three bodyguards and two baggage carriers per team leader or scout on behalf of a leader. There would be a few city dome officials with the same team set up - they have machine teams. Any single or outcast have to take a short test before entry into sections further in rows. If your trading with city regulations, a paper test is taken and 3 recommendations of respect city folks.
Due to being popular trade with folks of the city, we were access through with no issues. Given a suitable location of trade with city officials. The paper test was basic literacy, nothing strange.
"Miss Nick, you are still alive in spite of escaping our city dome sometime ago. How has life been outside? Any consideration of returning?" This was to be expected at somepoint, give how far we came to getting around the country without any problems.
"No. I am fine and prefer it outside. There so much to explore and trade. I hated argument reality." She stays wary of whatever people could pass to us. She is in full covered suit and with plenty of disinfectant on standby. The attitude of scanning every customer whom show technology, so we can gain knowledge of it for ourselves. It seems this customer are just being delicate in not to upset Kate.
"We have a request, having been recommended by several people to come to you. As of the moment, we are setting up a system that allows outsiders of the dome city to come in for trade. It still early years for any high level request could be made." Changing topic so that things are smooth talking, something that comes with trading between humans.
"Just get to the point, sir. You making some sort of adventurer guild system but everyone signed up is to weak or not suitable for this mission your offering." The grey uniform straightened his tie, lightly sweating. He waved a machine forwards to show a screen of London once more. Pin pointed the exact underground location of a item they have a tracker on. Or maybe the item was living, since this was a live feed and the dot moves on the map.
"A treasure hunter and several hired goons had a spy for us among them. Their mission was total failure to retrieve several locked gemstones. Their client boss is currently looking for new hired sacrifices. The lawless wants something to use against our cities hackers defence. His failure is all that prevented the total collapse of a few dome cities." Kate stayed business focused, acting indifferent to the information. This stuff was publicly available, but they came here in person for something.
"We will discuss this over a drink later, away from the public." She flutters a hand, "Other then that, are you actually here trade?" One the personal units came forwards. This model was a heavy goods carrier, offering a box.
Scan completed. Several survival devices, battery recharges and even a maintenance spider drone. A new catalog of data access through signal of the spider drone.
"A short story without the faffing of secert information leaking is that we of the central command of all dome cities network would like to hire you to retrieve the same items the competition wants. You will be compensated before and after. We can talk further details away if you wish. Yet we do need a confirmation of you being interested in the request. Take it or not, this box is still yours."
"We are interested... but the results may not be a great outcome. Talk later. Was there anything else?" The official frowns a little in the 'we' part. Taking the box off from the carrier with a single arm, moving it to the side door for now. The posed of thinking yet then also leaving without further words. Two of the Machines stuck around with their own trades, business without bias. She still played quiet strict as she was with the human official.
The rowed lines that were once indicated parking space was measurement for stalls. Three parking spaces per stand. Rows had numbers and dedicated organized purposes of rowing. This current row was between city only trade stands (regulated allowed trade for inner city) and machine row. The next row over was hunt trades or materials shops. The furthers to the road was outsider public traders whom weren't regulated to city dome standards. We are situated on the corner, so everyone came to us from all spectrums but being closer to city officials rowing helps prove authentic quality being somewhat standardized. She would call this a large scaled car boot sale.
"Wow, Mrs Nick!" Good to see some friendly healthy faces. Frank may have lost his arm but his still protecting them. The child quite the mature teenager that eyes gleamed in notice. The lady and her technical support husband - a scuessful newborn between them since. They must have tried again after the recover of loosing the one they had before. The three thieves are back together with this group, wearing control collars like slaves.
Kate and I have seen slaves often the closer around the mixing city and caravan travel cultures become. This area would suit such practices. They have two new faces, we haven't met. The two new faces had a heightened heart rate when Kate looks at them for any technology to scan, a little twitchy on wanting a gun to hand.
"Not a little tot are you." Kate jokes towards the child while it put some ease to know they can be causal, "Still alive." A dull tone response from her made only the new faces shiver, "I am glad your all healthy at least." a more positive response followed. They were being tested with such changing tones. She studies them all again with injury checks but posed a hand to chest as she sighed. Showing relief in a human way.
"I know." Smooth trade with Frank and some chit chat between. The parameters are still have note be breach, no hacking signal and nothing tethering the spider drone in the box. Item trade been smooth sale since set up, a observational notice of how fair we been dealt with so far.
"You seem the best person I can rely on telling me damn straight. These lot want me to have a bio connected arm replacement." Scanning his condition, its a possibility and shows potential worth. However substance abuse in his history... There is drug that help rely nerve connections with addictive problems.
"There is positive compatibility for new arm. Your problem is likely the drug needed for the first year. They don't tell folks how expensive, rare and addictive that drug becomes. Your liver tells us that you wouldn't process the chemicals of that drug correctly without complications." Kate says it straight. A whole group response was a twitch of annoyance whom isn't Frank, "Besides, you want me honest. I will be. You aren't going to be here for them forever. I hope you loosing that arm is maybe the wake up they need to realize that they are to reliant of you. There has to be somepoint where they know to pick up slack. A secondary leader being more assertive with your teaching."
The frowned expression of the new faces while both did give nod in agreeing. The tech guy sighing in accepting this fact, his wife annoyed. Yet she too softened with getting it, looking to the child in her arms. The grumpy teenager pouts with getting it, foot playing about with the floor and watching the van window sometimes.
"Its a shame you don't join us... most of us would like it. Yet..." Frank sighed.
"I walk radioactive areas like its a holiday. I can't make fleshy folks follow me around and die from poisoning." Kate snickers with preaperations of a box order being put together, sterilized as she goes along, "Besides... I have my own problems to plate up. I couldn't force anyone to do the things I do." Hand flat out, "Right cough the cash, trades trade." Frank with nodding has one the new faces put the box of scrap metal. Prolong study without touching... Plenty of new scrap with elements of new technology. Some scrap car parts. Empty bullet shells. Over trade on their part, "I am not about to scam you in broad daylight, so what else did you need repairing or trading for?"
"Scam? because of scrap." The new face is confused, "The guy three rows over was just saying it was junk." Kate looking to the old Frank. She ignores the complex expressions the others gave, the teen being the one to pull this aggressive newbie back. It wasn't meaning anything because the new ones don't know.
"I was hoping for gun sales or at least some kit for some folks."
"Got it. Your in luck, I am quiet the dealer for new and old. Some recent idiots gave me new things... and well... My brother likes tinkering."
"You have the permit to trade?" Still butting into the talk. Kate flutters a hand and leaned back. Soon to look directly to the group more.
"Oh please, where ever did you find a lost pair chimps." Kate snickers. She reached over the trade table surface to pats Frank. The textile test was most testing his nerves. She backed with a tilt thinking. Yet now she trades boxs with ease, "Knock knock, brother. Boxes." The van door automatically slides with robotic limbs collecting the scrap box and the government one. Everything picked apart inside the van, Kate closing the door to stop on lookers, "Whats the sort of comfort range for you lot or did you want to talk later off stadium about gun trade?" She waved about make her have the attention again.
"We will come by with the folks whom need them later. Are you sticking around for auctions?"
"I have several clients that want talks to me. Sticking around isn't a problem." She waves as they move away now, as the next customer came up.
Another smooth transaction, boring city trade for city regulated trade. Nothing exciting. This was quite a repeat too for the next 3 after was dull trades. No extra conversation and no questions.
By the fourth, things did go different. This customer did something coding related... tapped hand. Sounded as if they were trying hacking - assuming it would've work on us.
"Quite with the tapping or I will break your fingers." The customer frowns at Kate, studying then back to going to tap. The bodyguards stepped up with reading the situation, the anti thief's was enacted. The roof of my vans sheilding folding out the robotic limbs, hovering them in defence, "Our trade is finished before we even started. So leave. Take your items that you could have traded me and leave." Kate commanded.
"You a machine lady? What gave you permission to trade this close to the city domain?"
This kid was stunned to speak with the interpretation of his machine carrier stepping forwards ahead of him. The machines taking the items but also removing their own broken limbs. The van has stock robotic limbs giving replacements. Interaction of needle like chopstick arms and the carriers were a exchange of trade without Kate's interference. One carrier under traded, thus has to pay by signal tap for the extra cost. The other carrier punched playful as they returned duty to carry stuff.
"Leave." Kate reminded them. The bodyguards do as the kid gestures, backing down and moving off. They were looking for trouble and couldn't cause it with Kate. Off to the next victim or captured by peace keepers as sent off grounds. The protocol was set back to high security surveillance and trading.
"Can you spare me a moment?" A guard less official, not rare but uncommon. It could someone strong or someone faking the uniform. Kate cleans up with disinfectant, wiping it all down. Eventually was waving the stranger close now.
"I do scraps, repairs and maybe some treasure seeking. I walk the lands that can't be reached, clean it all up and eventually with some radiation sponging... sell it. So what's a lone wolf like you interested in?" He takes out a gun and shot it missing on purpose, putting a hole through the haz helmet. Kate doesn't even flinch, simple that she returns into the van. Changed clothes and back out in a new prototype suit that is also armour.
"Sorry about the helmet." the new customer smirked yet snarls in study of the new outfit, "Who are you?"
"Look creep, just leave. Shooting up the place does nothing but make next door wet the floor. So just leave. Or I will call peace keepers over if I haven't already."
There is a stand off of just staring at each other, not a single move. Two peace keepers do eventually wonder forwards from nearby.
"Mrs Kate Nick, we received your message." They look to the message and the man standing here, "We are terribly sorry for any inconvenience."
They bowed to her first and then with stepping to the lone wolf, whispering a bunch and soon walking away. Kate had a panel lowered for a sit, feet aching from standing up so long. She ignores whatever was happening for a length of time.
The one in the messy uniform is a higher ranking then the peace keepers. Signal analysis and body scan shows to be a very able person. Manners lacking much kindness. He huffed annoyed as there was a on going call signal, likely speaking to someone else about the ordeal.
"Miss Nick, are you finished trading?" This man look to the time with a watch on the wrist. Kate pouts with refocus back to this stranger. She helps me pack away goods into the van, changing the style of the trade stall.
"I am but my brother is about to be taking over. Did you want that discussion about the competition?" So they guys from the city in discussion before sent this guy to further the talk. Trying to charm her with looks or something... don't really work in the favor they hoped.
"Yes." The nervous lowering tone with looking around confused, "Brother?"
"It doesn't matter to you. My brother is my brother." The panels all moved around with changing displays, freeing her to do as she pleased, "You know any good food places around here? I am starving... I could eat a whole tree. OK, that was exaggerated." She does some stretching and even yonds, "Wwwwhat a long day?"
This message person isn't wearing the uniform correctly, traces of blood and there is a stain at the back of the neck area of the clothing. The intent of this person isn't valued enough to be trustworthy. They seem honest going by the heart rates and the types of injuries scanned in the study of them. Yet the way they hold themselves isn't military nor do they carry themselves like a city dome official.
Sheesh brother, the hitman can't be perfect. I know it wasn't normal city official. This guy might be a higher elite or an assassin.
"So where is the escorts you had earlier? I can imagine some solo wolf like you playing hooky. That is unless your not a city message passer." Done with her pretending to play down the situation. Her hand raised with poking the underside of a hover drone. She plucks it with care, petting even so slightly with twirling it to show the guy in uniform, "Look a fake guy." She let's the drone scan and relay as intended. She let's it hovers freely in dance to it inspecting her. She was playing around with poses for the camera like a drama star. The led light indicator altered from automatic to remote access control. She stands properly, moving away from the van.
"Miss Nick, the man before you is indeed one of our officials. He simply is a poor excuse of keeping the uniform clean. He is a higher threat level fighter then our last assessment of you."
"Oh, I was holding back last time. Its not hard task to break down a defence. But enough nonsense for now, as I care for being a nuisance to my wider customers. I recon food is in order!" She paused, "Oh I did nearly forget. Pardon me a moment."
She fetched a temporary new portable gut container, this was constructed so she didnt have to carry her weak point. Call it a temporary stomach and liver until she back to the van. Only really used around humans. She has it attach to her back, she pats my hover drone with a smile.
"I will be right back brother."
"stay safe and in signal."
She hops on out, posed prayer hands in deep thinking of what food stalls there is. She will continually think about food, ignoring the annoyed grey uniforms small talk. He talked of our achievements from her city data file and at somepoint used her original name. She give not the slightest reactions.
"Whats you goal here, sir David? Are you going to continue to spout history from my file or are you going to get to the point?" She stops them both to a queue for meat sticks, she scanned it and choose to have some. She paid for it as she returns, giving a lick of it before tossing the whole thing into the food box on her back. The helmet was lifted at the front for only allowing her mouth to reach the meat stick. It was back on properly before being next to David.
"The vault was called the silver brick Road, although it had other names like the silver vaults or the silver street. The security was air tight and none had ever achieved stealing from there. This made for perfect anti robotic measures. There is no signal down there. But there is at the entry... but all whom go there die before reaching the entry. The infected is highly active." Kate walked off again, paid for a whole ton of snacks. She came back licking them and boxing them. David is highly agitated by this. She nonchalantly pats his head and forced a wafer biscuit in his mouth. She didnt touch the wafer directly, but the wrapper covering it. David was fuming.
"Perfect place to hide humanities dirty laundry. Not just a market for gemstones for encryption software cores or hard to come by materials ran dried from the mass production of machines. No... you would have hide history books and objects that painted humans as the mistake makers." She flicked his nose, "So you can't just let some idiot steal from the vaults because he can. There might be a whole third agenda going on... I don't care." She licked a new item and tossed it to the box. She bite all sorts of fruits and adds them at her back. She moved on walking, the elite stunned... pale skin. She goes off ordering ice cream and late this one without it going to the box. She stops by a scraps stall, buys new metal stuff and added it to the box - thinking of the machine system in mind. She returns to David, tugs him along by his sleeve.
"Excuse me... but who told you?" the hover drone being remote controlled.
"I know from a educational guess. It isn't hard to work out. Besides I grow up in much different time, you could say calender system was changed and left me behind. You erased all those machines... vaulted some people. But... well... if you know my history. You know why I know. You used my old name. Talked about my dead wife and children yet you forgot to check the dates of those documents. Very amusing." She takes stop from going further and twirling back around to keep in signal, "Come along children, follow me. You wanted to talk." She poked David's nose again as she window shops once more. She had long stop to bargain with a stall and won. More things into her box.
"You dont have a stomach, so why are you hungry?" David finally speaking again.
"I may lack organs but I still have the internal functions of them. Its not easy to explain. Myself and my system are still working it out. Its been quiet a learning curve." She wasn't holding him anymore and she was back to the van, "At somepoint we are going to London. I wanted to go to the museums again. I wanted to see what changed. I loved school trips to London." She smiled to herself, "I do wonder what my little brother system thinks of the museums too. I bet he will freak out about the... Well maybe they been removed. Well I wonder if they moved dippy."
"Which one do are you talking about?" David being stren yet the after ring of his tone was nervous. He stood with cross arms, stopping himself from fidgeting.
"The Natural history museum. But there is the science museum, Victoria and Albert and the gallery to go to. Maybe the wax works. Stop by the Ritz or Savouy... It be amazing." She was so hyper, "Tower of London, Westminster, the templar temple... Oh and can not forget the Elizabeth tower that contains big ben!"
"Your a typical 21st century tourist." The drone speaker snickers, "Let me guess, you went to the silver vaults when it was just silver."
"My mother loves history and some silver items for sale were historical. We went to look but it was expensive to buy pure silver then."
"She isn't joking." David snarls, "The whole being frozen wasn't a prank or typo."
"Project icebox, so much of the full extent of that government secret was never fully uncovered. A shame really." She walks around to the driver side placing the heavy food container to the area for conversion. A big yond, "It doesn't even matter anymore. You lot are fine without us, so it seems."
The drone hovers with twirling check of David. There was a signal pick up, a text message. They back away for now, the answer they needed were given already now. Yet she wasn't finished...
"When I do go to London soon at somepoint, I suspect that the infected or whatever prevented folks from going to London will still be a big problem. I don't think what is left of the museums, shops and vaults aren't going to be as untouched as you assume it. So when I do make my way to the silver mile, I doubt I would be taking anything without paying a price." She closed the driver door, giving a slow small wave to them, "I don't think you will ever achieve stealing those items if no one has. It would take a army to big to clean away the lives. The more you send there the worse it must be towards achieving your goal." David backed away.
They leave us, back to letting her sleep for tomorrow's trade. There isn't any plan of going to where these city folks requested anytime soon. The purpose of us going this way was following the leaflet towards a area called 'zoo'. All this trading and raiding strange places along our way is for equipment. This 'car boot' was just a mid stop to a 'pet store' several streets over.
She didnt make any sense, I don't really have any record of what a zoo was. It wasn't a interest of mine when I was internet ai. Distracted by other things at time.
But all this med kits means she considering medical practice. She been studying creatures as we go, dissecting the dead for study example. She did say when she was confident, we will be raiding doctor practices and hospitals. I told her not yet. Start small places frist... there better survival chances that way.
