Near Defeat

The cool evening breeze whips through the truck cab. It brings the foul smell of city grime with it. Music blares all around him as Trent zips down the highway. He hopes to leave the state and all his troubles behind. I'll be on easy street once I reach Alabama, he thinks.

His friend in Montgomery agreed to pay a pretty penny for Carl's truck. He even offered him a job. Trent has heisted vehicles for him in the past and is well aware of the game's dangers. Alabama is a good place to start over, he concluded, jumping on his friend's deal. Trent figures the hospital called the cops on him the second Jannie stepped through the door. The fight would've happened if I'd taken my mom's advice, but being the good guy I am, I took her back, wanting to do right by my kid. She sure played me for a fool.
