Candice came round, dazed. ‘Aw.’ She said placing her hand on her head. ‘Got to phone Mark he’ll know what to do.’ She struggled immensely to reach for her mobile she finally pulled it out of her pocket dialled Mark’s number, she’d had it off him the moment Kaleen had started seeing Sandman incace3 she ever needed. ‘Emergencies only.’ He said, well this was an emergency if they didn’t find Kaleen soon she’d be dead!
‘Hi.’
‘Mark.’
‘Yeah.’
‘Help me!’
‘Candice is that you?’
‘Yeah help me?’
‘Calm down and tell me what’s going on?’
‘He’s took her. He’s goanna kill her!’ she answered dropping the phone.
‘Who?’
No answer.
‘Candice! CANDICE!’ He said.
Nothing.
‘Shit.’ He said. He ended the call putting the phone in his pocket, grabbing his car keys shutting the door behind him. He jumped out of the car slammed the door behind him rushed into the house, Candice lay by the door. ‘Shit!’
He ran over to her, pulling her up looking half there. ‘Candice, Candice!’
She slowly came round. ‘Mark thank god you’re here.’
‘What happened to you Candice? Where’s Kaleen?’ he said, his questions rolled out into one.
‘He hit me on the head, but I’m fine, he’s got Kaleen.’
‘Who?’
‘Sandman, he flipped he’s got her he’s goanna kill her.’ Candice screamed.
‘Whowh. Calm down, where have they gone?’ He asked, trying to calm Candice down.
‘To the sand dunes by the north pier. I guess.’
‘I’m calling the police.’ He said taking his phone out of his pocket.
He dialled the number it rang out. ‘Police please.’
‘This is DCI Maverick how can I help?’
‘My friend is in danger, her sister’s had a blow to the head. He’s took her somewhere we think he might have took her to the sand dunes. ’
‘What are their names?’
‘Kaleen Summers and Sandman.’ He said putting his hand over the receiver and looking at Candice. ‘What’s Sandman’s name?’
‘Justin Hearshaw.’
Mark took his hand off the receiver. ‘His name is Justin Hearshaw.’
‘Where are they heading?’
‘The sand dunes on the north pier.’
‘We’re on our way wait till we get there he could be dangerous.’
‘Okay we’ll meet you there.’ Mark said hanging up, putting the phone in his pocket. ‘Come on we better get down there. Are you sure you’re goanna be okay?’
‘Yeah. Let’s go, get there before anything happens.’
‘Why didn’t you tell me about him before?’
‘I couldn’t neither could Kay he blackmailed both of us threatened to kill both of us if anything was said.’
‘Come on we’ve got to get her away from him before he does what he intends to do.’
They walked out of the house and jumped into the car. Mark pulled away. ‘You don’t think he’ll really go through with it do you?’
‘The look on his face anything’s possible.’
Mark slipped a gear, putting his foot to the floor he shot down the road towards the beach.
Sandman parked up, jumped off the bike. He grabbed Kaleen pulling her off the bike she fell flat on her face to the rough edged pavement, he pulled her up quickly. Dragging her across the beach. It was dark night fall was on them only the moonlight glared across the sea.
‘What are we doing here?’
He gave no reply. He continued pulling her across the sand, and under the north pier.
‘Sandman!’
He turned glaring straight through her. The air felt warm on the sand dunes, but she still felt a shiver pass through her. His eyes glowed in the dark bright blue, they had a cold feeling in them. ‘Keep going stop talking!’ He said turning back pulling her further across the sand dunes.
‘What are we doing here?’ She repeated.
‘We’re going where no-one will ever find you.’ He said eerily.
He suddenly stopped about a mile into the dunes, he leaned forward, she felt him come towards him but didn’t expect anything than him kissing her.
She felt herself black out. Next she knew she’d woke in complete darkness, blinded by pitch black nothingness. She tried to move unable to felling as though something rough was rubbing against her wrists, but what?
‘Am I blind?
Can I see?
Owe, my head hurts
Where am I?
I can’t breathe, there’s no air, so thin.’
She thought trying to move even though whatever he’d rapped round her wrists was rubbing worse now the pain excruciating she could feel a slight grittiness between her teeth, she spat ‘Ewe sand.’‘Shit what’s he done?’ she thought.
She heard thudding coming from above her he was placing more sand on top of her and patting it down. .
‘You’ll never get out alive!’
‘Shit he’s making me into an Egyptian tomb.’
‘So hot in here
Suffocating
Soon I’ll be dead if not from dehydration, but from sand clogging my arteries
Making it hard for me to breath’ she thought.
‘I’ve got to get out of here, how can I whatever he’s wrapped round is really tight, wait a minute of course my pen knife if I can just reach into my pocket and grab it.’
She slid her hand into her pocket felling round for the knife ‘there it is.’ She grabbed it once, grabbed it twice. ‘Got it.’She pulled it out of her pocket, flicked it open almost dropping it. Her hands shaking. ‘Keep clam, he aint won yet, I won’ let him never!’ She struggled to keep a steady hand as she glided the knife back and forth against whatever he’d rapped round her wrists.
It split slowly she glided the knife straight up releasing her wrists from within it.
‘Not quiet free yet, got to get out he’s packed it so tight I feel as if I can’t breathe the airs really thin soon I’ll die!, pull yourself together you’re getting out of here.’
It seemed to have gone quiet above her she could no longer feel him packing sand on top of her, had he rode off leaving her there to die? Or was he still there?
She built up all her strength before she finally had none left to get out, she was beginning to feel woozy and a little light headed, she clenched her fists together.
Punching the sand the sand seeped from the top of the sculpture every time she hit it with force spitting out the sand which fell in her mouth and in her hair her hand shot through the sand she pulled it away with both hands she looked up Sandman stood above her, grabbed her by the scruff of her neck pulling her up. ‘Guess I’m goanna have to do this the hard way.’
He dragged her across the sand dunes her feet dragging behind her burning on the soft sand.
She swung out at him. ‘Let me go!’
He ignored her pleas continuing to drag her across the sand.
‘Let me go!’
She swung her arms out her nails cut across his face, losing his grip holding his face. ‘You bitch!’
Kaleen pulled herself up and ran, she was fast, but not fast enough Sandman grabbed her legs, she felt herself drop face down on the sand he picked her up grabbing her hair, pulling her across the beech towards the sea. ‘We could’ve had everything, everything.’
He stopped at the sea’s edge dangling her face towards the water. ‘Me and you we could’ve had it all, but you ruined it.’ He said pushing her closer to the water.
‘Shit I’m goanna die! Poor Candice I hope she’s okay, Shit I’m goanna die!’ She looked down a piece of paper lay on the beach. She quickly picked it up hoping he hadn’t noticed her. ‘Got to keep him talking he might drop the tough guy act and think again about killing me.’‘We can still be togetherI promise I’ll never pull a stunt like this again, promise.’
‘Too late, too late.’ He replied pushing her head only inches away from the sea.
Kaleen had a vivid embellished thought about the body the police found the night they first dated. ‘Shit!’ ‘It was you wasn’t it you killed Carver.’
‘So.’ He said coldly. ‘I saw her rip into you.’
‘She tried to warn me about you warn me off you. Why did you do it? ‘
‘She was a psycho.’ He started.
‘A psycho, the only psycho round here is you.’
‘She didn’t like it ‘because I finished with her to be with you.’
‘Why me?’
‘Cause you’ve got something special. You’re different than anyone else I know. We’re the same’
‘How can you possibly think that? You kill innocent people I don’t.’
‘I never understood why you got upset about your step mom.’
‘You can’t just go round killing people even if they hurt you.’
‘Why not?’
‘You just can’t.’
‘You know I loved you, I mean really loved you.’
‘I love you too’
‘But you ruined it, now it’s goodbye forever!’ He said forcing her head down.
‘Sandman NO!’ She said in desperation. ‘Anything, anything I’ll go with you if that’s what it takes anything.’ She said tears rolling down her face in fear knowing he was to do a repeat performance she was about to drown just like Carver had.
‘Too late, time to say goodbye, goodbye forever!’ He said forcing her head not the sea.
‘Armed police, let go of the young lady and step back.’
Sandman looked round him police covered the sand dunes guns pointing towards him, with nowhere to run he loosed Kaleen stood up.
‘Busted!’she thought a sigh of relief spread across her face knowing she was safe now and he’d got no chance of drowning her to death he’d finally been defeated!
‘Put your hands in the air and step away from the girl.’
Sandman slowly put his hands above his head, stepping away from Kaleen. Two armed police ran over.
One of the armed police men clamped his arms behind his back, the other put the cuffs on him.
‘Justin Hearshaw I’m placing you under arrest for the attempted murder of Kaleen Summers and causing grievously bodily harm to Candice Summers and for having a connection to the murders of Stacey Hearshaw and Danny Hearshaw. You have the right to remain silent whatever you say maybe used against you in court.’ DCI Maverick said. ‘Take him away.’
The two armed police grabbed Sandman taking him away.
He looked at Kaleen. ‘We could’ve had something, Kay we really could’ve been something.’
She looked at him disapprovingly feeling sick and shaken as they bungled him into the back of the police car.
‘Are you okay Miss?’
‘Yeah, thanks.’
‘We got his confection on tape but we will need you to come down the station in the morning to make a formal statement. You’ve had a pretty rough night.’
‘You don’t know the half of it!’
‘I’ll see you down the station tomorrow.’
‘Okay.’
‘Your friends were pretty good too. They phoned and told us where to find you, you better get yourself and your sister down the hospital to get yourselves checked out.’
‘We will thanks.’
‘No probs.’
Kaleen looked over Candice and Mark were running over to her. They slung their arms round one another she sobbed on to their shoulders.
‘Are you okay?’ Mark asked.
‘Yeah thanks to you two’
‘What are friends are for?’
‘And sisters.’ Candice added.
‘I’ll never forget this guys you saved my life.’
‘All in a day’s work.’ Mark said. ‘Besides we couldn’t let anything happen to you we love you too much.’
‘I love you guys too.’
They hugged each other, dropped their arms from round one another.
‘How did you know where to find me?’
‘You told me remember the night he brought you here. You told me after he brought you back remember.’
She looked at Mark. ‘Yeah, but how did you know?’
‘Candice told me everything it was a good guess on her part. I suppose.’
‘Sure was, I’m so glad to see you.’
‘But what about the paper he torn out of you diary?’
‘Here it is.’ Kaleen said pulling a piece of paper out of her pocket quickly showing them and shoving it back into her pocket.
‘How did you get it back?’
‘Guess he must’ve dropped it, I gave him a good fight he was too busy trying to push me into the water to notice it had dropped out of his pocket. As he pushed me down I grabbed it stuffed it into my pocket then you guys come just in time he was about to drown me I thought I was goanna die!’
‘Shh, you’re alright now that’s all that matters.’ Mark said as they walked away with their arms round one another.
The police car passed them Sandman looked out the window at Kaleen he looked so solemn, so sad, he moved his lips miming. ‘I love you.’
She shuddered.
‘Come on let’s go.’ Candice said as Sandman turned his head looking through the rear window smiling, miming. ‘I’ll be back for you.’ And ‘I love you.’ He turned his head back. As the police car drove off the sand dunes.
‘It’s all over now. ‘Mark said as they walked off the beach on to the road getting into his car.
But for Kaleen it would never be over, she loved Sandman and he’d turned on her she’d never forget him his face would haunt her forever what he’d done to her family would stay with forever scaring her for life just as his parents had with his. She’d never forget how she’d feel e very time she saw him, how she’d fell for his charms how he made her fell loved, how he understood her when no-one else ever did.
How he’d changed from a nice loving person to someone filled with hatred his eyes would still burn right through her sending a shiver down her spine this day would stay with her forever, for the rest of her life, and so would Sandman.
