Detention buddies

"The world is but a dark and dreary place. Where the weak are stomped on and those with strength trample over. Though we are taught at a young age that life is fair to no one, how is it that it provides for some while others struggle to survive? Truly the world we live in is anything but fair."

Looking up at my class teacher with a solemn expression and a tightly clenched fist held at a ninety-degree angle I concluded the statement with a monotone voice.

"That, Mr Foster, is why this world can never be treated as anything but a fierce battlefield. Thank you"

Taking my seat and intertwining my fingers, my eyes closed and expression deeply satisfied I awaited the applause I so definitely deserved.

"Ms Miller, what I asked from you was an explanation as to why the second world war was called the cold war."

"But sir, I basically answered the question."

Sighing out in frustration Mr Foster held a hand to his temples, rubbing them to ease what I can only assume was a slowly forming headache.

"No, Ms Miller, you didn't. You only gave us your opinion on what the world is like in your eyes."

"But I told you why the world is like a battlefield."

"But I never asked for you to do that. Just, just please keep quiet and forget it. I'm too exhausted to deal with you today."

And that ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is how you get out of answering a question you don't know the answer to.

"Yes sir."

Smirking at Kat who sat beside me I repeatedly raised and lowered my brows with a smug look on. She rolled her eyes and shook her head at my actions but I could see a small smile on her lips hidden behind a book. She knew exactly what it was that I just did and by the look of it, she was impressed.

Just then the bell rang for the end of school. Excitement coursed through my body of not only getting out of answering an annoying question but also getting to go home earlier than expected. The day was finally coming along well for me, that was until a hand firmly placed on my shoulder stopped me in my tracks.

Looking back to who the hand belonged to, I saw Ms Becken's shark-looking face close to mine. Instinctively I backed away yelling out in fright.

"Shark beast"

My eyes widened as I nervously laughed whilst scratching the back of my head at the realization that I had said that out loud. Apparently, she didn't find it funny at all. Her already messed up face scrunched up in distaste and annoyance. Mine twisted in discomfort at hers.

"Ms Becken, how are you this fine afternoon?"

I asked in a nervous tone, voice shaky and unsure. Her beady shark-like eyes lowered in threat. Yeah, she's definitely not doing well that's for sure.

"Ms Miller, it seems you have forgotten about your afternoon business."

"And what business do I have to attend after school?"

A sudden smug look appeared as she gave a wicked smile...or is it a smirk? Hard to tell with that face.

"That business Ms Miller would be detention."

It only took those few words to bring my mood down. Steering me in the direction of the class where detention would be held in I grunted in anger and frustration as I dragged my feet to my undistinguished destination.

Oh, the joy of youth.

I hate it and want to give it back.

To whom? I don't know.

Other than for the one other person joining me for detention the room was empty, I walked down an aisle towards the very back. As soon as I took my seat the door swung open and a teacher waltzed in.

"Okay, I'm here in my free time to look after you little shits and that's annoying as hell."

Wow, what a loving and caring teacher she is. Is this what the world has come down to?

"Firstly don't shout out loud like a bunch of loose cannons, you're not animals well, maybe you are. Secondly, unless there's a fire or you're dying don't disturb me."

She said this all seriously and with an uninterested voice. Sitting behind the desk, she perched her feet on the table and put on large headphones. Leaning back in her chair she crossed her arms and closed her eyes. And just like that, she was out like a candle.

Giving the slacking-off teacher a blank look I looked to the other student seated a few rows from me. He had his head on the table and arms covering it. So I couldn't really see who it was.

You'd think I'd just shrug my arms at this and leave him alone, right? Well, you're wrong!

Because my curiosity was like an extremely determined disease, I had the itch to know who that person was. Looking ahead to where the teacher was seated I saw that she still had her eyes closed, still, in the same position she was in a few moments ago.

I looked back to the stranger, picked up an eraser and threw it at his hidden head. The rubbery object bounced off his head and onto the floor. The man in question remained unbothered by the action. Huffing out a breath of irritation I reached for my bag, hauled out an old notebook, and tore out a piece of paper.

Balling it up into a small paper ball I threw it at him. This time I got a small reaction out of him. He scratched the back of his head but still refused to raise his head. Tearing out more papers and rolling them up into balls I threw them at him one by one. At the sight of the numerous white balls surrounding his desk, I stopped my actions.

This was not working at all.

The dude was still in his arms and hadn't moved since the first time I came in. I'm not so sure he's even alive at this point. Growing a bit bold and admittedly pissed off, I threw a pencil at him instead.

But even that didn't do anything.

"Oh, come on!"

Quickly covering my mouth my head turned to the teacher. She opened one eye, looked at me then at the boy who was surrounded by papers. Deciding to ignore it for now she went ahead and closed her eyes once more.

I released a big sigh of relief and looked at the boy. Growing irritated by this damned android that hardly felt anything at all without thought I grabbed the notebook and instead of taking out another piece of paper to throw at him, I went to the extreme and threw the book instead. The collision between his head and the book made a coconut sound come up and I nearly laughed at that.

"Ow, what the?"

Whipping his head to the back, bright green eyes connected with mine. As if the world was in on it, all the noises from the outside came to a standstill. His eyes widened and mine followed along in surprise and shock.

"You?"

He asked pointing a finger at me his hand against his head where the notebook hit.

"And you!"

What in the Bloody Mary and poltergeist crap is this?!

"Addison, what are you doing in detention?"

"Me, how bout you? I'm always getting detention for no absolute reason, what's your excuse!?"

"....I-I forgot to do my homework."

He bashfully explained as he scratched the back of his neck with a crooked smile.

"Homework, seriously?"

I didn't think teachers still gave detention for such trivial reasons.

"Why, what did you do?"

It was now my turn to feel embarrassed. Voice strained and shaky I gave an indirect answer.

"U-Uhm, it's kinda a long story and totally not interesting at all so let's leave it at that."

He gave me a look that said he didn't believe a word I was saying and I looked everywhere but at his eyes. He sighed in defeat and leaned on his hand perched on the table. Other than the small sounds coming from the teacher's headphones, no other noise was heard in the room.

Bored out of my mind I looked at the clock sitting above the teacher's board. The long arm was on the three while the shorter sat on the two. Detention started ten minutes after school and lasted for about an hour. Meaning I've been only in here for literally five minutes.

Are you freaking kidding me right now! I've only been here for five minutes and already I feel like committing suicide. I can't take this, I'm going crazy here!

Not being one to sit around and do nothing, I got up from my seat. My sudden actions made my cellmate look up in surprise. A brow raised and hand still holding up his head he asked,

"What are you doing?"

I looked over at him, and a genuine expression of boredom decorated my face. With an equally uninterested tone, I answered.

"I'm bored."

"So?"

"So, I'm going out to do something."

Pushing back my seat I prepared myself to leave the classroom.

"Wait, what? You can't!"

Just as I took a step away from my place I stopped to look at the green-eyed male in question.

"And why not?"

"Cause we're in detention, and you'll get in trouble for ditching detention."

"Dude, you realize the teacher who's supposed to be looking over us is sleeping with headphones and music blasted at full volume, right?"

I said thumb pointing in the direction of the lazy teacher. He looked at her and his face morphed into one of defeat.

"Yeah, I guess you're right. But-"

"But nothing. It's not like she'll even realize it if we leave."

Waving a hand of dismissal at him I tried to convince him that it was totally okay to ditch.

"Besides, aren't you bored? We can go out just for a few minutes and we'll be back before she knows it."

He bit his bottom lip and nibbled on it while pondering over my words. I could see the gears turning as he considered the proposal.

"Come on Jackson, I promise we'll be back before you can even say 'trouble'."

I tried to coax him into going along with my selfish request.

"You promise?"

He asked with an innocent look. His eyes glimmered like emeralds and he looked like a child entrusting themselves to a stranger. Little did he know that I was no kind stranger, I was more like a predator. But not in a pedophilic, pervy way.

"Yes, of course"

My words did not match my expression, I'm sure anyone would agree with that.

"Okay, I'm in"

Well, anyone but Jackson I guess.

"Great, then let's go."

Walking to his side of the classroom, I watched as he scrambled out of his seat.

"Wait, are we going out the window?"

"Well, yeah. The door's too close to where she's sitting, so going out the window would be best."

"U-uhm"

Fully opening up the window I looked over at my nervous companion. Chewing on his nails whilst also frantically moving his eyes around, I rolled my eyes at the nervous bloke.

"Relax, it's the ground floor. So we aren't going to fall to our deaths or anything like that"

He chuckled at the joke and I felt my heart skip a beat.

Wait, no it didn't! I'm over him, so there's no need for my heart to act in such an unusual way. Maybe it's one of those things where your heart takes a rest for a second longer then beats again.

Yeah, that makes more sense, right?

"You coming?"

Jackson was already halfway through the window, waiting on me. Well, look who suddenly feels brave.

"Y-yeah, just daydreaming is all. Hehe"

Why am I suddenly so nervous? This is ridiculous!

Shaking my head in a weak attempt to clear out unnecessary thoughts I followed after the boy as soon as he was fully out. Landing on a soft patch of grass I looked over at my accomplice in curiosity. In return, he gave me a smile that shined brighter than the sun. And again that feeling came once more.

Maybe it's all in my head. Or I'm catching an early summer flu. That would explain the heat coming from my cheeks.

"You coming?"

Looking over to the raven-haired male, I struggled to catch up with him

"C-coming."

Wasn't he afraid of ditching, why's he now the one leading the way?

"Right, I know where we can get some entertainment"

I announced as I once more took the lead. I'll just forget the feeling I got and concentrate on finding something fun to do.
