Carving Out a Home

Staring up at the massive tree, Roy began building a mental image of his design.

'Got to make sure I ~leaf~ support pillars, I don't want to be squashed.' Roy shivered a bit at the thought, before laughing at his terrible pun.

'Hmm, I wonder if, since I can use mana to spin things, I could make power tools?' Roy, wanting to find out the validity of his thoughts, immediately put them into action.

'Maybe I should have studied engineering back on Earth. Can't even imagine how useful that knowledge would have been.' Roy decided to make a simple drill, that had a rotation point on the drill bit that the mount connected to and locked on.

Not needing a motor, the design was far more simple that a traditional drill, though its power should be similar.

'The only thing I need to worry about is if the locking mechanism can hold onto the drill bit at full speed...' Roy began testing, using his [Mana Manipulation], he began rotating the drill bit. It held steady, as the RPM gradually increased. Eventually, Roy had reached the point where he was rotating as fast as his current [Mana Manipulation] level would allow. The drill was vibrating like crazy, but the locking mechanism never disconnected, much less broke.

'I'll call that a success!' Roy exclaimed happily. With this basic tool, he could make all sorts of drill bits to accommodate his needs.

'The issue is the reciprocating saw. If I try to make it move back and forth normally, then all the momentum would be lost and it would be much slower. Maybe I can make something I can spin, then that connects to a straight piece that pushes and pulls the saw blade? No that wouldn't work... Maybe if I use two straight pieces, one connected to the saw blade, while the other connects it to the circle.' As Roy continued playing with ideas for the saw, Solus and Terren returned.

"Hey Roy! No animals, but we filled up the water!" Solus came over, excited and curious about Roy's new toys. She sat down the water buckets, as she walked up to the drill.

"Whoa... Whats this thing?!" Solus picked up the drill, and stared at it curiously.

"It's a drill, well sort of. I made it with the idea of mana in mind, so it doesn't function without [Mana Manipulation]." Roy took the drill and used his skill to spin the drill bit.

"It spins like this, allowing you to drill out wood with relative ease." As he was finishing his sentence, Solus snatched it and began playing with it. Roy chuckled and began his work on the saw.

...

'Why is a forward back momentum so much harder... I'll take a break for now and figure it out later. It would be more useful for the smaller stuff anyways. For now, I need to carve out huge chunks.'

Standing up, Roy turned his hand into a hatchet. He walked over the the tree and began working on carving out chunks inside. It would take a long time and a lot of work, but it was also fun for Roy.

*Swoosh*

Roy's hatchet ripped through the air, tearing a chunk out of the wood. 'I should save the wood, I can use it to make stuff later.' Roy knew he wouldn't get any experience for it unless he got the related job, but it was a fun pastime for him.

'I should try and get some larger chunks so I can make chairs and beds out of wood. It would probably be more comfortable than keratin ones.'

...

Time slowly passed, and Roy had carved out a pretty large chunk of the tree, making sure to leave pillars behind as he did. 'Would be nice to have an architect skill right about now.' Roy sighed.

'With this we can sleep in here tonight. Now, I want to try making a chair!' Roy absorbed the hatchet back into his body, and slowly made an regular saw out of keratin. 'I really wanted an automatic saw, but I guess this will do for now.' Roy took one of the medium sized chunks of wood, and began carving out a chair shape.

Making a groove, as well as a consideration for a cushion to be added later, the chair slowly took shape.

There were no fancy designs, just a simple wooden chair made out of one solid piece. Even with that though, Roy was proud of his craft.

"Buhihihi! The greatest craftsman Roy, begins his reign!" Roy screamed out, arms akimbo.

Solus, who was still playing with the drill, looked over to him and shook her head. "Every time he makes something new..."

"I heard that!"

Going back slightly earlier in the day, as Roy continued carving away at his tree, a certain small fairy was about to train her new skill once again.

'I really hope I can limit the amount of information I get, I could barely take it last time!' The little fairy steeled herself, before activating the skill with a hardened face.

"MMMH!" The fairy nearly passed out immediately after activating it. She tried to block some of the information, limiting it to only the small area around her, but that was still an incredible amount. The forest was so dense, the network of foliage was constantly abuzz.

A particular piece of information was pricking her brain though. Apparently the tree sitting on the cliff right above her head was being assaulted. It was getting hacked apart from the inside by one of the creatures near it.

Cutting her connection so that she could think, the small fairy worked out the limited information she knew.

'Is that them? Are they letting out their anger on the tree after not being able to find me?' The small fairy was both horrified and relieved.

'If it is them, it means they are sticking around to find me, but if it isn't it means they are gone from this area. Or else how could those creatures survive?' Taking a second to think, the fairy decided to check out the situation.

'A quick peek couldn't hurt, right?'
