First Draft Pages 59-60

After Rob got to us we went into the garage and I hit the button to open the large garage door so we could leave. Everything was already loaded and we hopped in. Now mind you, I drive a 2009 Dodge Dakota with an extended cab, and it's white, it still does the job so shut up. I put the key in the ignition and turned the key. The engine started up and I threw her into drive. We rolled right on out of the jail and started down the alleyway.

There we were, driving amid the end of the world without a care in the world. I turned onto Second Street and hit the gas. We probably went at least 60 down the road before a cep started running towards the road. Jeremy stuck the rifle out the window and shot the thing right in the face as we drove by. Best time I have had in what felt like a very long time.

I took a sharp right turn on Jefferson Street and may or may not have hit a cep in the process, but we won't talk about that. We went through the square and right by the Courthouse, jewelry store, and Square 109 which is our family diner. Pulling through the square was weird because of the silence and lack of cars parked everywhere. We just kept on driving through acting like we didn't miss the good times we had up here just days ago.

I parked two houses down just in case something went wrong and if we got spotted. All three of us were sitting in the truck for a while just looking out the window. The moment was quite intense and somewhat terrifying. All of us were scared to death to step out of the car or at least I was. At least twenty minutes had passed before Rob built up the courage to be the first to step out of the truck. Then Jeremy and finally me.

We began walking down the sidewalk towards the building. The houses across the street were completely burned to the ground. If I walked over to them, the only thing I could see was a hole in the ground where a basement used to be. There were trash and a bunch of other objects scattered all over the place, from the streets to yards of the houses behind them.

"JEREMY, WATCH OUT!" I yelled as a cep was dead sprinting towards him. The trip just took a wild ass turn right at that very moment. Jeremy ducked down and the cep went flying over him. Jeremy sprang back up and we all began running back towards the truck. My feet just kept on going without me telling them to. The only thing I was doing was running for my life. Nothing else at that moment mattered and that was all that I could think about. Upon looking back behind me I noticed that the cep was gone and it was nowhere to be found.

Without a trace, the cep was gone and the place fell silent. Not a single sound could be heard, you could hear a pin drop and hit the floor. All was still, and so was the air with no wind. Something felt very wrong, but we began to walk back to the building. We all kept an eye out for the cep in case it came back or brought friends. The last thing I wanted was to see a giant herd of ceps surrounding the building and all of us being trapped inside with no way out.

Rob was the first one to step at the front steps leading to the main door. He hit the stock of his gun against the door. Jeremy and I were perplexed as to why Rob had done that.

"The goal is to draw out any ceps from the inside to the front door to make sure the place was void of any dangers," he whispered as he did it a second time. After a few minutes had passed, we all presumed that the place was cleaned out and ready to enter. Rob entered first and had his gun drawn and ready to fire just in case something popped out. If something did come from around the corner, I would need a new pair of clothes because these might get soaked. I am pretty sure I would not be the only one as well.
