First Draft Pages 61-62

The first thing we saw was a ton of different dog and cat foods. None of that was useful at the time, but now we know where to get some. All three of us split up and went different ways to cut down on time. I went to the medical room, Rob went to the main offices, and Jeremy went to check the back storage room. I made my way over the front counter and saw nothing but papers scattered everywhere. Documents of all sorts were lingering all over the place.

I stepped over everything and made my way into the hallway. I took a right and slowly walked down the hall. I tapped the butt of the knife right by the edge of every door I went by just in case. I went through about four doors before finally arriving at the med-bay. I went ahead and shut the door so that nothing could get in and bother me while I began packing away all the supplies we needed. I started opening cabinets and doors looking for anything Aaron may need.

I found bandages, gauze, peroxide, and some sterilizing agents. Now I was working at a pharmacy before the whole world went to shit, so I know some medications and what they are used for, but not a lot. I grabbed some codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and oxycontin. There were a bunch of others, so I threw them all into my bag as well. I wanted to find some metformin just in case we ever met a person with diabetes, but it is what it is.

After getting everything I was supposed to get, I opened the door and made my way back to the front. Once getting back to the front counter, I waited about five minutes before seeing Jeremy step out of the doorframe, and then we were both waiting on Rob. We stood there for what felt like a while. Rob then finally came walking around the corner with his bag full as well. I was interested to see what he filled his bag with, considering that he went to the offices.

I looked out the front door to see if I could make out anything. I didn't see anything, so I opened the main door slowly and quietly. Rob then said:

"Close the door; I can hear running getting closer very fast."

I closed the door, and we jumped over the counter and hid behind it. All of us, scared out of our minds wondering what was going to happen next. All three of us took turns peeping over the counter to see if we could see anything at all. Time went on, and none of us could hear anything anymore. I then slowly stood up and made my way back to the main door. Jeremy and Rob followed shortly after.

"On my mark, we all make a run for the truck and hold tight to all of your stuff, we can't risk losing anything," I said very quietly.

"One,"

"Two,"

"Three!"

I was the first one out of the door, and I just sprinted straight there. I kept my head up and eyes straight ahead. My legs carry me further and further with every step. The amount of adrenaline pumping through my veins made me feel like I had super speed, and everything around me was frozen. Nothing else mattered then. I unlocked the truck, and we all hopped in. I put the key in and turned it. I threw her into drive and put the gas down to the floorboard. We were out of there faster than any of the two could realize where they even were.

We turned right on Water Street and stayed on that road for maybe a couple of seconds before turning onto Franklin. We take this road for the rest of the way until we arrive at the gunshop. I drove very slowly through the square and around all of the trash in the way. We pulled right up to Dave's Gun and Pawn Shop.
