Memory Gap

It was two hours later, at the hospital, that Maria regained consciousness. Her head was heavy and her vision was blurry. Her body still ached and her head was threatening to split apart though the pain was now moderate.

She struggled to open her eyes but it felt gummy. She winced and shut her eyes again. The she tried again to turn her head but her neck felt stiff. She felt something warm slid past her eyelids. She wondered what that was.

Beside her bed sat Fred with a worried look on his face. He turned just in time to see the tears escape her tightly shut eyes. His heart tightened, was she in pain again?

He wiped her eyes and blew air into her hair. He stroked her forehead gently to ease her up. He noticed that she had her hands tightly fisted while whimpering. He stood up abruptly and made to call the doctor but then stopped minutes later.
