First Coffee

Heavy rain had finally stopped and now only the pleasant drizzle was gracing the wet bodies of people walking around. It was a rare occurrence as the town never had rain during the winter season. People would have been annoyed by the sudden rain, but some were there who found it to be magical.

"Why did you think it rained?" Reid looked at Rain and asked, now stepping on the main Street. They had settled to take a walk before coffee to enjoy the weather.

"Hmmm" Rain sighed and looked up in the sky.

"It is said that..umm..rain in winter is an indication that someone is trying to change their fate" Rain looked at Reid and shrugged.

"Does it mean that they were successful in changing or.." he fell silent following the gaze of Rain who was right now looking at a group of people gathered around something or someone.

There was a small smile playing on her lips as she started moving towards the crowd and Reid just followed her, intrigued as to what had brought a smile on her lips.

"I think about you all day and night when I close my eyes I see you, when I open my eyes I wanna see you. You drive me crazy when you are around but I go insane when you are not around. I keep thinking about what I will say to you but when I talk to you, I forget everything. You are my first thought in the morning and my last wish at night. You look like a dream but I am glad that you are real and you are mine, oh wait, will you be mine?" A guy fell on his knees and took out a ring from his pocket. The girl standing in front of him burst out in tears, and the crowd went *awwww*

"Why is she crying, she should be happy right?" Reid asked not looking at Rain, who quickly wiped off the tear which was threatening to drop.

"Mom, why is she crying? She should be happy?" Rain asked her mom, her eyes still pointed to the movie being played.

Her mom chuckled and brushed her hair lightly, looking at her young daughter.

"Sweetheart, love is rare, almost like a miracle. You might think, he is the one, but that one might break your heart and leave" her hand stilled as if she was thinking something, "sometimes it takes you a while before you find someone who will care for you and even with all the bickering, fighting, they still look at you like you are the first snow" she smiled a little "after going through heartbreaks and giving up on love when you finally find someone you like and they like you and want to spend their entire life with you, it's unbelievable like magic"

"You okay, Rain" Rain nodded her head failing to utter any word. The slightest change in her voice will convey her thoughts.

She knew guys, and guys don't like to talk about getting married or anything related to marriage on the first time they are going to have coffee with you, or anytime.

She shook her head and whispered "Nothing"

Before Reid could ask further, the crowd had started cheering and clapping and both of them knew that the girl had said yes.

"My Mom would have been really happy to witness this" Reid smiled, finally turning towards the street again, he took a step behind and then came forward again, being on the side of the footpath near the traffic. He raised his hand and settled it on the small of her back as both of them walked.

"Umm so my mom watches a lot of those rom-com movies and she would always cheer as the final gesture is made," he chuckled before continuing, "it makes all of us laugh as we are mostly busy in our stuff, so as soon as we hear the cheer, we know what would have happened" He looked at Rain and bit his tongue a little.

"So now the embarrassing part, whenever I hear that cheer, I rush to see what is happening. I mean I am still a man and all, but it's sweet" he laughed and looked ahead.

"But, If I act like a jerk to my mom, she would hit my head and tell me to apologize to her. She says that while she loves me unconditionally if she won't teach me to respect women, who else will" Both of them hadn't realized they were just in front of the coffee shop.

Rain pulled on her hoodie hoping that the staff won't act differently seeing her with a guy. She was also confused as to where she might sit this time.

The night shift has started, so maybe the regular staff won't be there. It's safe to go in.

"We can go in now," she said in a low voice, hoping that Reid hadn't noticed the shiver in her voice. The Jacket was warm but the rest of her clothes were all wet.

Reid placed his hand back on her and guided her inside.

He slowly brought his face near to her and whispered "You can go and freshen up, I will get us coffee" Rain just nodded and was not able to speak anything else. "Also, you could return the jacket later"

She quickly hurried into the girl's washroom and for the first time in the day looked at the mirror. Her wet hair had been sticking to her face and the pale face looked haunted.

"Aaaaahhhhhh" a girl screamed looking at her as soon as she entered the washroom.

She took deep breaths before finally speaking again "you.. you look..you"

*There was nothing she could do with her look right now*

The rain was about to leave when the girl held her hand.

"No no, no sister, you are not going out to that gorgeous man, looking like this" she looked at Rain and then nodded.

"The jacket falls till your knees, so just go in and take off the rest and for now put on only the jacket. Don't think.. quick quick" Rain was shocked hearing her words but another look from the unknown girl and she quickly made her way in.

While Rain changed, the girl took out her comb, some blush, and lipstick.

As soon as Rain came out, she held her in front of her and combed her hair a little. Looking at the pale face, she gave a disapproving look and applied little blush and lipstick.

Rain's black hair has always been a little wavy and the light makeup which the black jacket made her looked like an angel walking on earth.

"Oh Dayum girl, you look pretty" Rain wasn't sure about her comment but as soon as she stepped out, and found many gazes landing on her, she knew.

"You...you look so beautiful" Reid hurried and pulled out a chair for Rain, who was fumbling with the hem of the Jacket, her gaze still on the ground.

She had worn skirts in the past, but she didn't know why this was making her feel uncomfortable.

Reid's gaze was fixed on her face not moving down and that made her feel better.

She slowly picked up the cup kept in front of her and started sipping the coffee.

"Would it make you feel better if we quickly finish the coffee and head out?" She looked at him and smiled. He was thoughtful and she liked it.

As her eyes were wandering everywhere while she was trying to finish the coffee soon, they fell on the advertisement by Reid. She was still not sure if she would like to live with him but she could still see the place.

"Ah, yes, that's me," Reid said following the gaze of Rain.

"I still haven't gotten a roommate" he took the last sip settling the cup back on the table.

"Can I ...can I ... have a look?" Rain put the cup back and looked at Reid.

"For now everything is going as planned" a female voice spoke on the phone.
