Memories

It's pitch black and quiet; I can't see or hear anything. I take a few steps forward then, out of nowhere I can hear people screaming and asking for help, there are loud noises that overlap the people, I can hear footsteps approaching.

A door swings open and there's a man, he walks right through me. He approaches a girl and grabs her. Wait, is this…a dream?

"No, it's not a dream Skye." The voice from earlier, everything lights up and there's a figure in the wall. It's just like my dream. "I am the spirit of The Volcano, an important landmark to those that use fire magic. Come with me." The spirit follows the man and girl; we go in the same direction that I went during my dream. We walk past three people that are running in the opposite direction as us just like in my dream. Though, everything freezes the spirit comes out of the wall, but is covered by flames. "These three, do you know who they are?

"No."

"These two young ones, they are your brothers. The one with them is their mother….your mother."

"My-my…mother?" I walk in front of her and examine her, I look a little like her, the only difference is our color. Mine is blonde while hers is red. "I look like her." The spirit nods, and everything unfreezes. We continue to follow the man and girl until we get to a door, the same door where they separate. I watch as everything replays, the girl running to the woman, their little talk, and the girl smiling.

The spirit hints to continue following the girl so we do. We walk down a dark tunnel; the only sounds are those of footsteps. After a while we reach the end of the tunnel and approaches another door, the woman opens the door and were in a little room. Everything freezes once again; the spirit comes out of the wall.

The sprits flames die down and then there are voices, they sound like they're coming from every angle of the room.

"Run don't look back!"

"Kill her!"

Don't let her get away."

"I love you."

I hear it, my name.

"Skye, you need to leave!"

Everything goes dark, except for the spirit and their flames. "Come, there's-"

"What is this?! Why did I hear my name? That little girl in the dungeon, she looked just like me. What's going on? What's happening!?"

Everything lights up, but the area is different. Were outside, there are fires everywhere, people running and screaming and crying. There are some people with weapons and some without. This is completely different from the room we were just in. The spirit disappears.

The girl runs out of a building followed by a group of men. They shoot arrows, spells; they pick up rocks and throw them at her and whatever else they can find. The girl then bumps into someone and the group of men yells for the person to hold her so they do. The girl struggles to try and get free, but she can't. Just as the men are approaching a sword stabs through the person holding the girl, they fall to the ground. It's a woman….mom? Everything freezes.

The spirit appears in front of me. "If it wasn't for her those men would've killed you on the spot. Come, I have one more thing to show you." I follow the spirit and eventually we end up in a big room. There's writing all over the wall, just like in the volcano, chairs and tables are scattered through the room, and the floor has a giant picture with small writing on the top. "This is where your fate was decided."

My fate? I didn't want to believe that the girl was me, but the spirit wouldn't lie, would they? This time the spirit doesn't disappear, it stays with me. Within an instant the room is filled with people, my mom and I are in the middle, my mom is crying as I hold onto her.

A man stands up and points at me, suddenly I'm in the middle of the room as a child with my mom. "Your daughter will be sentenced to death; you should consider yourself lucky you aren't going to die with her." Everyone around us murmurs and I can hear a few people agree while others are saying we should both die.

"Please don't do her harm, it's not her fault." My mother clings to me as she sobs.

"Your father started a war between the three races because of her! The only way to end it is to kill her."

"That's not true, I've said it before. We can seal the king."

Everyone talks amongst themselves for a few minutes before someone else stands up. "How do you propose we do that?"

"It's an ancient spell, it's forbidden-"

"No." Someone speaks up. "It's forbidden for a reason. We don't know what could happen."

"So you're just going to let the king kill millions? The humans are almost but dead and the demons could fight for centuries."

The spirit comes to me before everything goes dark. "I was getting bored, we can skip this." It's bright again but we're still in the building, this time everyone is standing up and two people are standing right in front of me.

"We will not kill her however, you must be one of the sacrifices and well wipe her memory and seal her magic. She is forbidden to ever regain her memory and her powers-" In an instant, everything's dark and bright the same people that were around us a minute ago are gone except for the person that was just talking. "She is not allowed to have any contact from us or the demons; she will be raised as a human without any knowledge of her past."

The spirit appears in front of me before everything goes dark.

I wake up and notice I'm surrounded by lava, frantically I look around and try to move but I can't.

"You can't move yet." The spirit.

"What's going on? Are you finally going to tell me?"

"Those were fragments of your past life or more accurately your memories. You were sentenced to die in the dungeons shortly after you were born, however, your grandfather started a war wanting to know what kind of child you are as you saw-"

"What kind of child I am? What does that mean? How could one man start a war?"

"He wasn't one man, he was a king. King of fire and you are the princess. Born part goddess, unfortunately, that's not it, almost no one knows the truth about your father and those who do have sworn to never talk about him. I was hoping I could pick at your brain to find out the truth but I was unable to find anything."

"I'm a princess and a goddess?"

"Yes, do you think just anyone could stay in boiling lava this long without dying?"

This doesn't make any sense. "Does this mean I can use magic?"

'No, I'm just responsible for your memories; I can see all the memories of those in the fire kingdom, the only ones I can't see are the ones who have passed."

"So, this was pointless then. What does having my memories have to do with anything? If I'm being honest there weren't a lot of memories, to begin with."

"You will regain the rest over time, through your dreams."

"What about my magic? When can I use it?"

"I can't say, as I said I'm responsible for memories. Everyone is different."

"What do you mean 'everyone is different'?"

"People gain their magic ability at different ages, different situations, and so on. I've seen when some would start using magic as early as five and others as old as a hundred. However your situation is different, so it's hard to say. If it wasn't for your mother you would be dead, instead, she sacrificed herself so you could live."

Everything goes dark and by the time everything brightens I'm on land. "What just happened?"

"Listen carefully, Skye. What I'm going to tell you is very important. Your brothers are trying to start another war; you cannot allow them to do that. I don't know the exact details, but those who believed in your mother made a pact. We believe you'll fix the corruption they've caused."

I look at the spirit; I can tell there's sadness around them. I reach out to touch them, to comfort them. Just as I do, the flames disappear and a little girl appears. I move away shocked. "I'm so sorry."

"I'm as old as the first god, and never has anyone tried to comfort me." She bows before me. "I am your first follower your highness. I will do whatever you ask of me." She looks up at me with tears in her eyes and smiles. "If there is anything I can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to ask."

"There is one thing you could help me with."
