I Thought You Would Never Ask

Nathan let out a hollow laugh. "Adrian, I have been doing everything in my power to prevent what happened with my dad from happening with anyone else and it nearly got me killed. That's why I'm turning my powers off."

He was looking at this the wrong way. What he was doing was only exacerbating his guilt and making things worse.

"No," Adrian said thoughtfully. "Your problem wasn't that you let your dad die. It was that he was going to die anyway and you saw a vision of it. Bad things happen every day and no one can stop them. They're a part of life. Feeling like you have to is your problem.

"Turning off your visions is the most proactive thing you can do. If you stop feeling responsible for the lives of total strangers, you might be able to stop feeling responsible for your dad too. And if you can acknowledge that you weren't responsible for him, you'll know your mother was in the wrong."
