Chapter 16: Finding out

Everything has been going great the past month, but I have yet to tell my dad about my pregnancy. Today is my monthly ultrasound appointment where we find out the sex of the babies. My mom and Danny are coming to the appointment and I had to tell the girls they had to wait until the next appointment. Doctor Stringer said it would be best if there weren't too many people in the room.

"Are you guys excited," mom asks Danny and me while we're waiting to be called back.

"What kind of question is that you crazy woman," I ask her appalled.

"Yes we are very excited," Danny says with a laugh.

I roll my eyes and we're called back.

"I see we have mom here with us today," Doctor Stringer says when she walks in. "How are you today?"

"I still can't believe my baby is having a baby, but I'm very excited to see what the genders are," mom tells her with a big smile.

"This is a very exciting time indeed," she replies.

She takes all my vitals and whatnot and then we move on to the ultrasound.

"Looks like peanut is a... baby girl," Doctor Stringer tells us. "And it looks like bean is a...hmm... boy!"

Danny and I look at each other with tears in our eyes and he leans over to plant a kiss on my forehead.

My mother squeals, "A boy and a girl! Just like your brother and sister!"

She comes and gives me a giant hug and kisses me all over my face.

"I can't believe it, a boy and a girl," I say in a daze.

"I'm so happy," Danny says with so much emotion in his voice.

Doctor Stringer hands us multiple ultrasound pictures to take with us and distribute to everyone.

Mom drops us off at Beth and Brian's and goes home.

"Hey, guys! How was the appointment? What are we having," Ariel fires off questions before we even make it over the threshold.

"Breath A, we will tell you everything. I need to just pee first," I tell her, walking past everyone to head to the bathroom.

When I return, Danny is excitedly talking about the appointment.

When he sees that I'm back he tells them, "We're having a boy and a girl!"

I laugh and sit next to him, wrapping my arms around him and kissing his cheek.

"I can't believe it! This all makes it real," Beth says.

"I know! It's like I knew that I was pregnant, but now that we know the genders it's solidified," I tell them.

"I'm really happy for you guys," Brian says, giving Danny and me hugs.

"Thanks, Bri," I tell him, tearing up once again. These darn hormones!

We hang out for a while before I need to head home for dinner.

"Do you want me to come in," Danny asks as he parks outside my house.

"I think I'm going to tell my dad and it would probably be best if you weren't there," I tell him.

"Okay, call me and tell me how it goes," he says. "I think I might go home and tell my dad."

"Yeah, you should, unless you want me to be there."

"I'll be okay baby." I lean over and kiss him before heading into the house.

"Hey mama," I say finding her in the kitchen making dinner.

"Hi baby," she replies, coming over and kissing my cheek.

"Is dad home? I think I want to tell him now that we know the genders."

"Yeah, he should be in his office."

I thank her and then head to my dad's office to talk to him. I knock on the door and wait for him to reply.

"Come in," he says.

I walk in and see him behind his desk doing some paperwork.

"Hi daddy, can I talk to you for a few," I ask him, fiddling with the end of Danny's sweatshirt. I really need to get some maternity clothes.

"What's up sweetheart," he asks me, putting the document he is holding down on the desk.

"Okay, I'm just gonna come right out and say it because I know that you hate small talk," I take a deep breath before continuing. "I'm pregnant daddy."

He sits there just staring at me before stating, "I know, I was waiting for you to come to me."

"I'm so sorry dad, please don't hurt Danny. I know we-," I stop myself before saying, "Wait, what?! You knew and didn't say anything or try to kill Danny?"

"I've known for a while. Jane had been going through your room and found an ultrasound picture. I thought it was one from when your mom was pregnant with the twins but then I saw your name was written on the picture."

"Why didn't you say anything or try to kill Danny?"

"I thought long and hard about everything and I talked to your mother. She was very rational and told me that the situation you guys are in isn't the easiest with you still being in high school. I figured I would just wait and you would tell me when you were ready."

I walk over to him and he stands up. I wrap my arms around him and cry into his chest.

"I'm sorry, daddy. I know how disappointed you must be with me," I tell him through sobs.

He just rubs my back trying to soothe me. He finally speaks, "I'm more upset that you didn't come to me sooner."

"I was scared of your reaction," I tell him honestly.

"I love you and I am always here for you," he whispers. "What are you having? Your mom said that the gender scan happened today."

"We're having a boy and a girl," I tell him, handing him the picture I brought with me.

He looks at it and gets tears in his eyes. He looks up at me with happiness.

"I'm gonna be a grandpa. Oh god, I'm getting old," he says.

I laugh and we stare at the scan for a little while longer before mom calls us for dinner.
