Did She Play Holi?!

I remember when I had seen Angeliah for the first time. My mom and I had gone to her house to enquire about the school. Angeliah was sleeping. Her mom woke her up and introduced her. Damn, if looks could kill I am sure I would have been six feet under. The way she was looking around like a predator who had just been prodded at. I was truly scared of her at that time.

And now seeing her at school all groomed up with that seemingly permanent scowl on her face scared me even more. Everyone in the class was goofing around but the moment she shouted the class became silent. We all started looking around for Fiorenza. I had no idea who she was but I had to pretend I was finding her to escape the ultimate wrath. Thankfully the girl in question turned up soon. She had gone to the washroom. The class got back to their goofing around in relief. That was just a small incident.

Moments later, Fiorenza came back and sat down next to me. Apparently, she had been told by Angeliah to look after me as we were building mates. I was really thankful for her concern. Fiorenza did help me a lot. But me being an introvert couldn't reciprocate her help and kindness. I couldn't help it. I was too shy to speak up. I also missed my friends from my previous school. I wished I could be bolder but opening up to people was a very hard thing for me to do.

There were five new students apart from me. They befriended the old students in no time while I spent a whole month sitting at one of the corner most benches isolated from everyone. Every once in a while someone would come up to talk to me or to ask how was I fitting in and I literally answered in monosyllables. Those friendly mates realized I wasn't someone worth talking to. So they stopped after a while.

There were two other new girls apart from me and their names were Pranni and Shreati. Pranni was that way too studious person a.k.a teacher's pet. Shreati was a normal - sometimes fake - girl with an annoyingly high-pitched voice. Her voice was piercing. They both got along well with all the other girls from the class. I had an instant dislike for girls who cared for studying more than anything. I did think every girl from this school was the same, but later on, I found people like me and now we are best friends.

I will talk about it later on how we became best friends.

One day, I went to school wearing a yellow top that had faded blue patches and it very much looked as if somebody had mistakenly upturned a bucket of blue paint. I was receiving funny looks but the ultimate insult was during the break. I was going to the washroom and two boys were having their lunch near our classroom door. They thought they were whispering but I heard them loud and clear. As I was walking to the door, one boy suddenly went, "Did she play Holi? Her top looks so funny." And that was apparently the joke of the decade. It was lame but they went on laughing for a long while. I didn't find it necessary to reply to them. I let them enjoy their own joke. I mean that's how good I am.

P/S: To all those who don't know what Holi is: It is a festival that is celebrated in India. People express their joy by putting colors on each other. It is a vibrant sight to look at...
