Chapter Ten

Sam's POV

Kayla was speechless and so was everyone else. I had just confessed to her that I loved her and honestly I did. She was beautiful in her own way with long brunette hair and violet eyes. I don't now how I fell for her, but she bewitched me seven months ago when all of this started and she saved me from being Walker's food. I was in my most hateful class of the day, Science. Everyone was presenting their project they did with their group and my group was next, but we never got to go because a frantic voice came from the intercom saying that we shouldn't leave class. Then the person started screaming and saying not to bite her and what not that's when everything went from great morning to hell.

Everyone had panicked and left class turning in a massacred of so many students and teachers. I was just walking when I bumped into one of them and noticed for the first time I saw surrounded and that they weren't human, because humans don't eat other humans and it was very disturbing. Yea, people say I'm a douche bag; loner and that I have an attitude. Blame my parents for that, because every time they were home they were drunk and started hitting me. I hated my parents and I would have moved on my eighteenth birthday, but I was still seventeen and I wouldn't be eighteen the day after Kayla's birthday.

Anyway like I was saying, I was surrounded by Walker's and I had no where to go I would be lying if I didn't say I was scared shitless. My heart beat flew like I was running a marathon in track, but they didn't last long because a girl with brunette hair and violet eyes had come and kicked their asses. I was surprised to know it was Kayla Anderson the popular girl with brains and looks, but she never looked my way and I never looked her way.

Kayla had told me to follow her and I was yet again surprised that she had save other people too, who where anxiously waiting for her. Caleb and Ciara being one of the people that was in the group. I guess it was from then on that I started liking her more and more each passing day for the seven months we had been together.

Then that kiss I gave her happened. I didn't know why I did it, but I knew she was scared from the flames that had started on her hands. What I didn't know was that with my touch her flames engulfed our whole body. It didn't hurt at all the flames just dance around in our skin, but I had this urge to kiss her and I couldn't hold back. I had crushed my lips into her and flames went a tempo higher, but I remembered that Caleb had also kissed her I pulled away feeling a shamed of kissing his girl.

Now, he was challenging me for her love and I gladly accepted the challenge of fighting for her, since he wasn't going to play fair then I wouldn't either. I was still looking at Kayla and she was still speechless, but he gaze never felt mine. For some odd reason I felt this electricity go between us and I knew she felt it, because I saw a shiver pass over her. I didn't know what to do, because I feel like I should leave her side that I should next to her. In that moment I wanted to feel her lips against mine and kiss her like I never kissed another girl before.

I regrettably took my eyes of her and looked at Caleb, who was next to her. "If you won't play fair I wouldn't either, but you know as well as I that even if we do fight for her that she's the one that will choice not us for her. But I will gladly take from you even if I have to use dirty methods," I told him not backing down.

Caleb smirked "Fine," he said and turned to look at Kayla, then at me back to Kayla, who was still looking at. Caleb took her chin and made her look at him. He crushed his lips into her mouth and I felt my blood boil. She was shocked and speechless yet again. Caleb looked at me "One point for me," he said and walked to another seat. I glared at him. Just you watch, Caleb. I will take her from you, I thought.

Kayla's POV

Caleb had just kissed me on my lips again and my emotions were going into overload or overdrive, whatever you want to fucking call it. I just could process what had just happened. Sam just confessed to me and accepted Caleb's challenge for my love for them, but the question is this: who will I fucking choice in the end? I loved them both, but it's a very hard choice. One of them would get hurt and the other would be happy, because he had me and had won the challenge. Guys are so complicated.

I could feel people's eyes on me and it was making me uncomfortable. I turned back around and looked out the bus window into the dark night. I felt Jasper sit on my lap and wrap his small yet welcoming arms around me. I could already tell Jasper's touch from the others and Jace sat on the seat where Caleb was a moment ago. "Guy trouble," Jasper said.

I chuckled "Yeah," I told him and he cuddled in my lap. He yawed "Jazz, go to sleep ad you to Jace," I told them. They nodded. Jace lean his head back on the seat and Jasper cuddled in my arms. I started to softly sing a lullaby that my mother used to sing to us when Tyler and I were little, but I don't remember who sung it I just knew that I loved that song. They breathing evened out and I knew they had fallen asleep with the lullaby.

Tyler sat in front of the seat that Jasper was and looked at me "You were always good with kids," he told me and handed me two blankets. I covered Jace with the blue one and used the black one to cover Jasper and myself with it.

I chuckled softly "And you were always terrible with kids that I can't even imagine you having any in the future," I told him.

He turned serious "If there is a future," he said. I frowned because he was right all this is changing everyone's future one way or another it's changing for those who survive and those who turned.

I sighed "You're right," I told him and closed my eyes. I felt his hand on my right cheek the heat going into me like my body was absorbing it. "I missed you," I whispered to him a tear escaped my closed eyes. Traitorous tears.

He chuckled and felt him wipe away that one tear "I missed you too, my little Sky," he said and kissed my forehead. "Now, go to sleep I'll be driving, so by the time you wake up we'll be in Missouri," he told me and as if his words held power over me I slept.

Lance's POV

I had left my post on the gate a few minutes ago and now I was on my dorm lying on my couch staring up at the ceiling out of boredom. I wondered where the kids were and what they would or should be doing now. I they would be with survivors helping them and trying to get them to safety, but hopefully they wouldn't be planning to come here. Things weren't like they should have been and I just hoped that they don't come to this part of Colorado, where we had broadcast that there wasn't any zombies. A knock came at my door. "Come in," I yelled.

The doors opened and the Commando came in "Lance," she said and I scrambled to my feet and saluted her. She chuckled "Please, don't be so up-tight, old friend," Adriana came in and made herself comfortable in m couch. We used to be married to each other many years ago and we had a son, who was here with us. Dean was only a year older than Tyler and Kayla. He had the same violet eyes as them, but looked different. He had black hair, my strong jaw structure, smooth pale skin, muscular and very intelligent. I'm not saying that Tyler and Kayla aren't intelligent all three of them are, Tyler and Kayla didn't know they have an older brother. Dean, on the other hand, knew everything about them, because I told him every time I visited him.

I un-stiffed my body "Adriana, what can I do for you?" I asked her and seat on the far side of the couch away from her.

She chuckles "No need to keep a distance, Lance. Dean wants you not I you, my friend, and I came to check on you," she told me.

I looked at her hazel eyes "Why would you came and check on me?" I asked her. Adriana had shoulder length black hair, hazel eyes, slim but curvy, full lips, and smooth ivory skin.

She sighed "Because I know what happened to you and your wife seven months ago," she told me and I flinched at the reminder, but I buried those memories. Her eyes soften "Have you heard from you son and daughter?" she asked.

I looked away "No, not even a peep from those two, but I know their still alive out there, Adriana. I know they are fighting to survive this, but I'm still worried. What if they didn't survive? What if I will see them, but they would zombies? If that ever happened I don't think I would be able to pull the trigger not even of it was you or Dean," I honestly told her and it was the truth. Yeah, we went our separate ways, but I still considered her family and Dean was/is my oldest son.

"I know, but anyway I only came here to tell you that Dean wants you. I don't know why, so don't ask me," she said and I heard her stand up walking to the door "He's at the gates," she told me and walked out closing the door behind her.

I groaned. Great, I had to go back to the gates. God, why do you hate me? I thought to myself. I stood up grabbing my guns plus ammunition and walking out of my dorm towards the gates, where my son was. I walked fast through the man-made dirt road and reached the gates in less than ten minutes, since I always walked fast when someone asked for me. I saw Toby and two others by the gate.

Toby turned around and smiled as he was me coming "Lance, buddy, what the fuck you are doing here? I though you were in your dorm sleeping your ass off," he told me, as I stopped in front of him.

I looked at Toby and smiled a small smile. Toby has chocolate brown eyes, curly brown hair, and wrinkled face for a forty year old, muscular, light brown skin with hard features that were hard to describe and I wasn't going into details. I don't like checking out guys makes me feel like I'm gay or something. "I wasn't sleeping and besides I hardly sleep you know that. Dean was looking for me and I know he's here," I told him.

"Dad," I heard Dean call me from the right side of the gate and he walked towards me. He had a smile on his face. "Glad you could make it," he told and gave me a one arm hug. I did the same.

My smiled widen a little "Yeah, me too. Adriana said you needed me for something," I told him getting straight to the point.

His eyes soften a little "Have you heard of my little brother and sister?" he asked me looking away towards the gates. I wasn't the only one affected by the epidemic of the dead. Dean wanted to leave Colorado in search for them and bring them with him to this place. I would have let him if Adriana hadn't said 'no' to him and left him worried.

I grabbed his left shoulder and squeezed it "No, I haven't heard of them for seven months and…" I didn't finish, because another fucking mob of zombies were at the gates again. I took out my rifle and started firing at the damn things trying to get them away from the gates, because that way we didn't have to fix them again and stay up all night. "Don't let them reach the gate. Dean go get back up now," I yelled at my son, while firing at full speed. Dean ran at full speed to get back up, because they were at least a hundred many more of those mother fuckers. Ugh, can this night get any worse? They started pushing at the gate again like last time. I had to ask curse my luck. Dean was back with back up and very one started firing staying away from the gates, so that they would get bite of grabbed onto by them by accident. We learned that the hard way the first two months. I was out of ammo and reloaded the thing as fast as I could.

It was midnight by the time we finished re-killing those bastards. We had been firing for the last five hours and most of us were out of ammo other had a few left and I was one of those that had almost all the bullets, since I had good aim and I always aimed at the forehead. We had no casualties, except we had to repair the gate again and that had my blood boiling in anger. "Get the things we need and I'll have some people guarding incase we have another zombie invasion," I told my son and walked towards a group of newbie's. "Alright, stop talking and get guarding. Partner up and I want to two groups go to the left and two groups to the right, if any of you are attacked one of you can leave and get help. Don't try to kill all by yourself, understood? I asked them and them nodded pairing of and walking in their separate direction. I stood guard at the front of the gate and watched my surroundings. Why me? Well, I shouldn't be complaining at least I had something to do even if I did hate it, I thought.

"I'll stand watch with you," Dean said stood on the other side of the gate also watching every shadow that danced around the fading building and trees.

I nodded and we kept watch the whole night and by the time we were finished, the sun was rising over the horizon singling another day. I appointed four guards this time and told them the same thing, but this time it was for four hours. It was six in the morning, so the next group had to start at ten in the morning. They were my son, Jake, and Luke. My group had to start at two in the afternoon with Toby and two others. I walked back to my dorm, took a long hot shower, put my alarm clock at the time and went to bed. I fell into a deep dreamless sleep.
