Chapter Thirty Three

Blueth Mendoza's POV

"So, what were you tasked to retrieved from this place?" I asked Rachelle as I followed her. We made our way through the halls, trying our best to stay quiet and not let any of the Scavengers roaming around to spot us.

"They said that it was a valuable necklace. It was left behind and was forgotten in this place. The owners of it would've come and get it themselves, but when they found out that this place has been overrun by Scavengers, they didn't go for it. When they heard about me, they called and asked me to retrieve it for them."

"I see, but why didn't they call the police then? Why didn't they report it?"

"You know Scavengers are free to do whatever they want right? They get away from stealing stuff in abandoned houses because they aren't hurting anyone."

"I thought they sent out a notice which lets scavengers get arrested?"

"They did, but somehow, they still get to run around stealing in abandoned houses. They just let them do what they want."

Rachelle suddenly stopped walking, she had her back against the wall as she took a peek at a corner. After checking if the coast is clear, she looked at me and told me to follow her, so I did. We eventually made our way to the second floor of the house. There we saw Scavengers were in a big group, talking about something. I can't hear what they're saying to each other, it's their masks. From far away, their voices are muffled, so it makes it hard for you to understand when you are far away. They didn't notice us because they were too fixed with their discussion.

Rachelle and I sneakily went around them, avoiding making any noise which will alarm them and put us in a situation we don't want to be in.

As we went deeper into the house, we entered a room, a bedroom to be exact.

"This is the room they told me." Rachelle said as she took out a piece of paper from her pockets.

"Hm?" I looked at her in confusion.

"My clients told me that the necklace should be in a bedroom with a drawer. And this looks like that room they were talking about." Rachelle then started walking towards the drawer which was beside the bed. I let her do her things as I sat on the bed, waiting for her to finish and get what she was tasked to get. "If the Scavengers haven't found it, this will be an easy mission. Then, maybe we can hang out a bit." Rachelle said as she looked at me for a little bit then she returned her attention in opening the drawer.

I smiled as I heard what she said. You're not going gay for me now, are you Rachelle?

I sat patiently as she kept on opening the lock on the drawer.

"So, the school's family day is coming up, are you excited?" I asked as I took a look around the room. I heard a loud bang on the drawer Rachelle was trying to open. I got surprised which nearly made me jump. I looked at Rachelle and asked if she was okay.

"Yeah, yeah. I'm fine, my hand accidentally slipped while opening this drawer. It's really hard to open. It must be because the locks on it are old."

"Oh, well I'm just glad that you didn't get hurt. Anyway, as I was saying, the school's family day is coming up. Are you excited? I sure am, although my parents won't be with me this year because they're not here, they're working somewhere far, so, Ms. Val will fill in while they're not here."

Rachelle didn't give any response and just kept on unlocking the lock on the drawer.

"Come to think of it, I haven't met your parents yet, I actually haven't heard you talk about them. It'll be really nice if I get to meet them." I said as I gave a smile. I'll meet them and I'll introduce myself as your lover. Wait, what am I thinking? I know I accepted my feelings for Rachelle but, Blueth, come on, don't go too far.

"Yeah, it'll be nice." Rachelle replied as she kept unlocking the lock. Wow, that lock's really hard to unlock. But hey, at least she gave me a response.

"Hey, here's an idea. Why don't we meet an hour early before the family day begins? That way we can meet each other's parents and our parents get to meet us, well, your parents will meet Ms. Val anyway."

Rachelle let out a sigh as she took out a screwdriver from the small pouch she had tied around her waist. "I won't be attending the family event."

I looked at her with confusion on my face. Why wouldn't she attend? That's a day where students can get to spend some time with their parents, not like they're not spending time or anything, but it'll be an event in school especially for spending time with your parents, why doesn't she want to come?

"Why won't you attend the event? It'll be lots of fun! You can play lots of games with your parents, share laughs and jokes. It's a day especially for bonding with your parents, for spending quality time with them."

"I just don't like attending those kinds of events." Rachelle said as she finally got the drawer to open. She took a look inside the drawer and she stood up.

"Why?"

"I got what I was tasked to get. We should go." Rachelle placed the necklace inside her pouch and started walking towards the door.

"You haven't told me why you don't want to attend the event." I said as I grabbed her arms and pulled her, stopping her from leaving.

"Because I don't want to go."

"I won't let you leave unless you tell me why you don't want to go and attend the event!" I said as I kept pulling her arm, stopping her from leaving.

"Because I don't have parents!!!' Rachelle screamed at me. I was shocked and my eyes widened as I heard her. I let go of her arm as I realized what I've done. I can see tears started forming in her eyes as she started breathing heavily.

"Rachelle... I'm sorry... I didn't... I didn't know..."

Rachelle looked away as she had her hands clenched tightly, trying to hold back her tears.

I was about to approach her but I saw this huge shadow appear behind her.

"Well, what do we have here? The two troublemakers I see."
