It was now noon, the day had progressed significantly. I just landed outside of Kelly's Cafe as I put my mask in my bag. The streets were still soaked with blood, but it seems all of the bodies have been removed. I took a deep breath, slightly nervous as to how they all might react, before finally going inside.
Both Kelly and Riley were sitting together at a table. It seems the two survivors that Daniel sent us had gone home. When they both saw me enter, they both looked up from the table they were staring emptily at while they had sat waiting. Both of them had a gloomy expression on their faces.
"Why didn't you save them?"
Huh? Save who? What is Kelly talking about? I stood there, confused, trying to figure out exactly what she meant, but she continued before I had a chance to really think.
"You're the girl in the white mask that defeated all of the Reapers right? I heard from other people who saw you that you had every type of magic, including healing. If you had the ability to, why didn't you save everyone from the Reapers?"
Oh, she's talking about everyone on the street that I didn't save. I had a good reason though. If everyone knew that I possessed such immense power, they would chase me out of town!
"I couldn't reveal how powerful I am."
"What kind of excuse is that? You could have done something, but you didn't do anything! How could you let those people die? Those people supported me when the times got tough, and I was there for them when they needed me. You made friends with the regulars, as I had done long before you. Yet, you let them die because you wanted to keep a secret?"
There weren't tears in her eyes. It was clear she had cried long before I got here. Instead, there was only a look of pure hatred. I could have done something if she was just angry, but she wasn't. She hated me.
"Do you know why I was homeless? Every town that I went to made me leave once they learned of my true powers! I just wanted to find somewhere to live comfortably!"
"Who cares if your comfortable or not! Because you wanted your comfort so bad, people died! You only went out to do something about the gang war once you learned that we could lose the shop at the hands of the military if the fighting kept up! Are you so selfish to only fight when something important to you is at stake? And if that's the case, does that mean the people you let die weren't as important as the back room of this cafe!?"
What do you want me to say?
Huh? When did I get outside? Wait, I'm not just outside, I'm not even in the city! I can see its outline by the horizon where the sun is setting. When exactly did I get here?
My memory feels a little fuzzy, but I think after listening to what Kelly told me, I just walked out. I remember Riley called out to me, but I just kept walking. I guess I just walked all the way out of the city to here.
"Why did you come out here?"
My head snapped in the direction of the voice that spoke to me. It was a girl dressed neatly in a clean servants uniform. The uniform looks exactly like the one that the servants wore in Gabriel's mansion. Did she follow me?
"What do you want?"
"I was told to do everything in my power to convince you to accept masters proposal."
"I thought he respected my decision?"
"He does, but your talent is simply to great to ignore. He feels that with your help, the city could become one of the safest in the kingdom. Considering how you singlehandedly brought the gang wars to an end, I too, believe that you can do it."
"I don't want to. I just want to live a quiet life."
"Well, I guess I will have to stay with you I until you do."
"Knock yourself out."
Once our conversation ended, I began to consider my options. Everywhere I go, I get chased away for one reason or another. I know I dismissed it before, but maybe I really should just build my own house and live alone. It would be a bit of hard work building and caring for it, but right now it doesn't seem like a bad idea.
Okay, since I'm just going to live alone, I guess I should live over there, where a small river flows through a small woods. I bet that would be a nice place to live. Everyday, I would get to wake up to the sound of nature and breathe fresh air that doesn't stink of the smells that build up in the city.
Well, my house isn't going to build itself. I guess I better get to work. I began to walk towards the ideal area I had just decided on until I stopped.
Everywhere has kicked me out because of my immense power, but Gabriel is welcoming me for it. I turned to face the city that stood on the horizon, letting my thoughts wander.
Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea to work there. I don't exactly want to leave, as the city is full of memories I made. Even if those who once trusted me might resent me now, at least I can make up for my shortcomings and atone for my mistakes by doing what I couldn't before.
"Actually, I might just take Gabriel's offer, but I have a few conditions."
