Three of us sat inside the car, and the excitement of my pregnancy disappeared into thin air just like that. The news that another body was found was very serious, and the child in my belly would suffer the most.
My hands caressed the surface of my lower stomach as I pursed my lips. 'Will we be fine, Aiden?'
He sat beside me in the backseat while Ethan was driving the car. His hands covered mine and he gently squeezed my palms before intertwining our fingers. 'Yes. I'll keep you safe, no matter what!'
His words seemed to make me feel a little relieved, but I didn't relax my shoulders. Instead, I was stiff and frozen, sitting with my back straight. I was anxious as hell.
Last time when a dead body of a human had appeared, the police didn't leave a single chance at putting me and Aiden in a difficult situation. This time, I didn't want to face the same situation.
When Aiden saw me worried, he hugged my waist and placed a kiss on my forehead. 'Don't worry too much. It will be bad for our baby.'
'I haven't even tested yet.' I pouted at that.
It took an hour to get back to the pack, and three of us rushed out to walk toward the site of murder. The guards seemed to be worried as they showed us the way.
The entire place was filled with werewolves from our pack, but they didn't dare to move or walk toward the dead body. Even the guards didn't dare to touch the dead woman. He just anxiously called my husband in a hurry to give him the news.
We passed through the main gate and directly turned toward the forest on the right side. The fountain seemed beautiful beneath the morning sunlight, but I wasn't in a mood to admire the scene. I was as anxious as the guards.
Soon, we reached the place of the murder, which was exactly the same as the last. The dead woman was wearing red clothes as her eyes looked upward. Her face was pale as her limbs were stiff.
She was beneath a big tree, same as the dead body we had found previously.
I paled seeing that and my footsteps instantly paused.
I didn't want to see the dead body. Even Aiden didn't seem to have any intention, and just gestured to Ethan. The latter nodded and walked off only to rush back after five minutes.
This time, he had something in his hand. A paper.
My husband frowned. He read the paper and his brows furrowed even more.
I got curious. 'What's in there?'
Aiden didn't seem to hear my voice as she was constantly thinking about something. I moved closer to him and read the letter.
'Next time, it will be your wife.'
My face paled at that as my limbs trembled. My knees felt weak, and I fell on the ground. 'No…'
Aiden seemed to wake up from my sudden outburst, and he turned toward me, holding me in his arms. 'Don't worry. I'll keep you safe.'
I nodded, but I was still terrified.
***
Aiden summoned a meeting again in urgency. I sat beside him, still shaken up because of that letter. I didn't recognise that handwriting.
So perhaps that person actually wasn't me. But I couldn't be sure.
Since my husband had many enemies, it was safe to consider that someone wanted to take revenge against him.
This was the same thing that Aiden had also considered and told everyone about it, but the room became silent again as soon as he asked for everyone's thoughts about the solution.
Even I can't find any safer solution to this.
Then, Ethan raised his head. 'We should send her away.'
Murmurs rose across the meeting room as everyone was surprised by hearing that. They didn't want to send me away, fearing Aiden's wrath.
So ironic. When I had arrived first, these groups of people were busy blaspheming me. Now, they want to keep me here so that even if Aiden were to get angry, I wouldn be able to control him.
But I really wasn't in a mood to confront these. I was really anxious about my survival, but I had faith in Aiden. I knew he would do anything to keep me safe.
I trusted him.
'I'll ask my cousin for help.' Aiden suddenly said, gaining everyone's attention.
Ethan's eyes widened at that. He stared at my husband in disbelief. 'You mean…'
Aiden nodded, not saying a single word. Then he took out his phone and went out, talking to someone. I assumed it would be his cousin.
I was curious about this conversation. The atmosphere in the room suddenly changed after hearing my husband's words. It seemed as if none of these people could believe what he had said just now.
'What cousin?' I asked in confusion.
'Aiden's cousin, Alpha Owen, from the Hender Wolf Pack,' Ethan finally parted his lips and said.
I nodded in understanding. It was half an hour away from here. But that didn't explain why these people had such a drastic reaction.
When he saw my expression, he sighed helplessly. 'Actually, both Aiden and Owen hated each other years ago, and recently, they reconciled saying they won't disturb each other in the future.'
My eyes widened at that. If Aiden didn't like the presence of Owen, then why did he decide to send me to such a place? Wouldn't I be more in danger?!
Ethan could sense my confusion and he explained. 'Don't worry. I can deduce why Aiden chose such a thing.'
And then he started his explanation. According to him, whoever the killer was, he would never even think that I was being hidden in the Hender Wolf Pack. The enmity between the cousins was famous among the werewolves today. So that would be the last place the killer would think of.
Just then, Aiden came with his lips pressed in a thin line and sat on his chair with a sign. 'We will leave today.' He turned toward me. 'Pack your bag.'
I lowered my head. Neither saying yes, nor saying no. Truthfully, I didn't want to stay away from Aiden. After my mom stopped considering me her child, Aiden was the only family left. If I were to get away from him at such a time, what would happen to me?'
What if the killer approaches Aiden behind my back?
Wouldn't that mean I'd become someone without a family after Aiden dies?
I suddenly trembled at such a thought. My lower lips quivered as tears formed in my eyes. Suddenly, Aiden's hand went around my waist, and he kissed my forehead. 'Don't worry. I'll keep you safe.'
Then he started explaining everything. 'You will live there for a while until things calm down, and Owen will help in forging a fake identity for you. He decided to select an unmarried werewolf, Evan, who's still a medical student, to become your fake husband.'
I panicked hearing that. My fake husband?! Wasn't this going way too far?! I didn't want to leave Aiden, and become someone else's wife! But I couldn't say anything about it.
When I saw Aiden's cold expression enough to freeze anyone, I understood that even he was reluctant to let me go, but he didn't have any other choice.
We had just received the news that I was pregnant, but we didn't even get to enjoy our time as husband and wife who were expecting a child. And I was already being forced away from my husband.
Tears formed in my eyes, but I closed my eyes to hide my expression.
