He broke eye contact. “I keep it dark so that Halina might come visit me.” He looked back at Iggy, not seeking his expression, but to express his own. A longing and a love, a desire as well as a need, too. “She comes and she goes, and she doesn’t like her presence to be known.” Poetry. His hand gestured toward a dark corner. “Sometimes she comes straight out of the darkness, and surprises the hell out of me.”

Pater coughed. “Don’t let him fool you. He’s sat alone in the dark thinking Halina was with him too many times to count.”

“It’s true!” Firmin admitted, throwing his hands up and looking up at the ceiling with full declaration. “And I’d do it all over again!”

Iggy pulled his head to the side like a child listening to a bedtime story as Firmin gushed with joy. “How did you find her in the first place?” he asked.
