31: Resistance

“Well, we are married. That’s about as long-term as I get, so it’s bound to happen.”

“The honest truth is I have fallen head over heels for you, D.”

“No, Gregory, you have not.”

“Yes. I have.”

“No. You don’t even know what love is,” she insisted, making an attempt to sit up. Greg gently resisted, holding her to him.

“Just listen, Donna. I know you don’t believe me, given my reputation with women and everything you know about me. You don’t want to believe me, but I am dead serious.”

When she didn’t say anything, Greg told her, “I obviously didn’t foresee how this entire arrangement would cause my feelings for you to change so much. I started out wanting a smart, beautiful cultured mother for my child and in return I was going to give her my name and the security that came with it. Honestly that’s all I wanted. But then I started spending time with you. All the energy I have put into this is translating into genuine feelings.”
