Sister Xi

Lilian Mo opened her eyes again. The dark had gone away and she was in someplace else.

"!!!!!"

"Run, quick!"

She looked down from the rooftop where she was standing on and fired at the mutant. One of her teammates hadn't climbed up just yet because a mutant's vine had grabbed ahold of their foot and was trying to drag them down.

She aimed at the vines and fired but to her surprise, there were only ten bullets in the rifle that she had found and now there was no more. What followed were clicking noises that were like warning bells in her ears.

She called out to the tall woman beside her. "Sister Xi, save her! She needs help!"

Sister Xi was just above their teammate who was struggling and with Sister Xi's strength as a Level Six ability user, she could haul that person up.

Lilian Mo was very hopeful as she pulled out a knife, prepared to help fend off the attacks until Sister Xi was able to help their teammate.

But then, Sister Xi threw the butt of her cigarette down, causing it to land on their teammate's eyes. The girl screamed and her grip loosened. She was dragged down, her fragile body slammed heavily on the ground. She must have broken most of the bones in her body.

Lilian Mo was frozen like a statue as she watched the group of mutants swarms the girl's body like they were ants. The girl met her eyes. There was a look of despair and a hint of disbelief in them before a two-headed mutant ripped the girl's head off from her body and fed it onto its mouth, chomping down using its massive jaw and teeth.

Blood and brain juices dripped down the two-headed mutant's large mouth.

In just a matter of seconds, the girl that was their teammate had disappeared and became mutant food.

Lilian Mo had outstretched her hand weakly, a rippling feeling causing pain in her chest.

That was how easy it was for a person's life to end. There was but a spray of flesh and blood, then there was no more.

Lilian Mo wearily looked at the tall woman that she had respected and admired since joining their team.

"Sister Xi, why..."

The woman pulled another stick of cigarette and lit it up using a lighter. "Lilian Mo, you can't always save everyone. In the world we live in now, we can't always look out for these weak people. If you want to live, being ruthless is the King's way."

"The King's way... The King's way... Why do we need to be ruthless to survive? Can we even call ourselves humans after doing this?"

Sister Xi laughed and she looked at Lilian Mo somewhat helplessly. "That girl was injured and bitten by a mutant. Even if we saved her, there was no guarantee if she would live or not. She would just drag us down. She might even turn into a mutant. Are you prepared to kill her when that happens?"

"Just because of that, Sister Xi did not save her? She was only bitten not infected." Tears formed around Lilian Mo's eyes. "What if I also got injured like her, would Sister Xi discard me just like what you did to that girl?"

The woman called Sister Xi looked at Lilian Mo as if she was looking at a child.

"Don't cry, Little Mo. You aren't like her. You're strong. You won't die so easily."

"Heh... Sister Xi, that's not an answer."

Sister Xi did not reply and she smoked her cigarette, no longer entertaining Lilian Mo's nonsensical question and leaving the girl who was now crying and sobbing helplessly.

...

"Lilian."

An ice-cold sensation woke her up. Lilian Mo opened her eyes and sprang up from her seat. She looked around and almost bumped heads with someone.

Seeing a pair of intense blue eyes staring at her, Lilian Mo paused. She knows this person.

"Jingren..."

He smiled at her when he heard her calling his name.

"Lilian."

Lilian Mo quickly hid the unease she felt when she saw him smiling. It was unbelievable. Lu Jingren was smiling...

This man who suffered from facial paralysis was actually smiling at her and he also called out her name two times. She noticed that her hand was cold. Her eyes widened slightly when she saw that it was his hand holding her hand.

'I must still be dreaming.' Lilian Mo thought helplessly.

Lilian Mo felt uncomfortable. She woke up from two nightmares only to dream of something different. This dream also seemed pretty realistic. The Lu Jingren infront of her really looked like the real one. Lilian Mo shook his hand off, wanting to pull her hand back.

His grip unexpectedly tightened and the smile on his face vanished. Lilian Mo quickly stopped as she was reminded that even if this was a dream, Lu Jingren was a dangerous person when angry. His possessiveness knows no bounds.

"What are you doing?"

"You were having a nightmare." Lu Jingren told her in a low voice, squeezing her hand gently.

"You were calling out someone named Sister Xi. Who is that?"

"No one important." Lilian Mo replied as she avoided his gaze and looked outside the window, ignoring his hand that held her. She closed her eyes again, wanting to go back to a dreamless sleep, trying to ignore this Lu Jingren in her dream.

Lilian Mo who thought that this was a dream had ignored the pair of eyes that were watching her.

Mu Qianmo who was the only person that had seen the two people's interaction smiled secretly.
