At that moment an intense roar shook the bowels of the mountain; the seemingly unshakable walls trembled as if they were pieces of paper, the calm of the underground river waters curled in a furious waves; the rafts oscillated on the crest of the waves, embarking water, throwing some objects outboard, some of which sank while others floated to the edge of the rafts; one of the rowers, who was peering above the outboard fell heavily into the water.
Despair and confusion momentarily dominated the crew, impressed by the sudden rupture of the calm of the liquid universe. Then, calm returned as suddenly as it had evaporated before. McPherson and the other crew member helped the rower back onto the boat. Teresa, who had held terrified to the gunwale, loosened somewhat the tension. For a few moments no one dared to talk, until they could be certain that the event was over. The nervous silence was finally broken by McPherson.
