Unlikely Friends in Unlikely Places - Chapter 7

The Assassin awoke with a start in a cold sweat. He looked around the room, nothing was amiss. He relaxed slightly and looked down at the Thief sleeping soundly next to him, calming himself more. He touched his empty sleeve and flinched at the remnants of death still lingering from his dream. He laid back down, rolling over towards the wall. He rolled over again, now restless, feeling as if something threatening was around but not knowing what. Eventually he got up and went over the the wardrobe. Sweeping his arm wide he threw on his coat and headed out the door, sticking to the rooftops so as not to be noticed. Suddenly he spun, crouching low behind a chimney as the back of his neck tingled. After sitting for a few seconds another man came into view, darting across the rooftops. He stopped for a moment and the Assassin was barely able to make out his features. He had blondish hair, dark blue armor with gold trim and a golden longsword by his hip. The Assassin sat still, not daring to breathe, hoping the man wouldnt notice him. "Come out, i know you're hiding there." The stranger shouted towards the chimney. The Assassin sighed, he really wished the stranger hadnt noticed him, it wouldve been easier that way. He stepped out from behind his brick haven with his hand on his dagger. The stranger looked him up and down, pausing at the empty sleeve. "Who are you?" The man in blue questioned. The Assassin hesitated in answering, not wanting to give away his name but not wanting to start trouble either. "A concerned third party, who are you?" The man in blue didnt seem to appreciate the Assassin's answer but made no move to attack. "Just a warrior investigating whatever made that disturbance." The Assassin became interested immediately, "So you felt it too." They both looked at each other for a moment, waiting for a movement or response. Suddenly the horizon lit up with fire as a house on the edge of town ignited. In a flash both men were darting from rooftop to rooftop at top speed towards the house almost in sync. They crested the final rooftop at the same time to see a massive creature towering over what few houses remained, flames engulfing the remains of what it had already destroyed. They readied their weapons, a hint of worry in the Hero's eyes as he looked at the empty sleeve of the Assassin but was soon relieved as a blur of black flashed across the beast, sending it reeling, wailing in agony. The Hero joined in, sending golden strikes raining from the sky, avoiding the Assassin that was flicking around the monster's ankles with little effort. They sliced and stabbed, switching in and out, keeping the monster confused and discombobulated, not knowing who was attacking from where. Both warriors in near perfect sync. The beast went down on one knee and both lunged for it, the Assassin going for the throat and the Hero slicing through the nape of its neck. The massive head lolled on the ground and the mighty beast's body crumpled to the ground, shaking everything as it hit. They stood in front of the body, panting and admiring their work well done. They looked at one another, the Hero, stepped forward to shake hands but the Assassin simply nodded in respect and melted into the shadows. The Hero stood there then began rescue efforts and cleanup as the Assassin slipped across the night and back home to his Thief.
