Movie Night

Rain was in English class now and she had a conflict. No! It was not a small one because things like this were very serious. This was a big one and Mr. Johnson just had to pick her out of all people to do it.

"Rain the homework assignment was to write a poem about something that you find significant. Since you seem to be one of my top students, I expect you to have to complete the assignment. This means you can present your poem first." Mr. Johnson instructed.

"What poem?" Rain questioned feigning confusion. She did the homework but she just loved to be difficult in this class. Mr. Johnson's reactions were always priceless. "Rain, you did do the homework didn't you?" Mr. Johnson asked, immediately irritated.

Rain narrowed her eyes and shook her head in denial. "Oh I don't know Mr. Johnson did I? Or did you think that maybe I didn't?" Rain replied trying to use reverse psychology in him hoping that it would work.

"Ms. Love, do not test me right now," Mr. Johnson warned her. Rain put her hands up in surrender. Mr. Johnson had such a short temper sometimes and it was best not to make him...explode.

Rain sighed and began.

The Essence of What We Are

By Rain Love

I'm not a butterfly that knows how to escape.

I was born without wings, I wasn't made to fly away.

Every day when I'm awake I face a problem without a face.

I was born to have conflict, it doesn't need to have those traits.

The logical part of me wants to think about living in a simpler way.

But I wasn't born to live simply. I was born to find a way.

Supermodels are something I see every day, they all lack scars.

I wasn't born to be perfect; I'm human because of those scars.

I wasn't born to have it easy.

I was born to live hard.

I wasn't born to have freedom.

I was born to have a way of escape.

I wasn't born to have a goal.

Having a purpose is my simpler way.

"In case you didn't get the message in the poem. We are humans who naturally want to have it easy. We all tend to thrive and have these big goals all the time and it's so rare that we actually achieve them. None of us want to struggle but sometimes a struggle is what you need to get to where you are. Life may not be fair to us all the time but it's necessary. We'll all be getting a lesson at the end of it regardless." Rain said, making the whole class quiet now thinking about what she said.

Mr. Johnson cleared his throat. "Lovely as always Rain. Although I do see a few flaws in your writing....nevertheless, keep up the good work." He said before continuing with the lesson.

Rain ended up blushing a bit as people in the class kept staring at her applauding her. Rain was always good at poetry and the whole class knew it. But she hated public attention because it always made her nervous and shy. But the poem she told in class today was actually something she scribbled together the night before, so how did she pull this off...who knows.

For the rest of the class period, Rain waited anxiously for the bell to ring and when it did she flew out of her seat. She was in a hurry now to meet Shaneil at their spot. Before they had gotten out of chemistry class, Shaneil had told Rain about a problem she was having with someone at school. She needed Rain's reassurance so that she doesn't do anything stupid. Rain was always good for stuff like that when it came to Shaneil. Knowing exactly how to calm her. It was one of the reasons they became good friends in the first place.

The bell rang again signaling that it was now lunchtime. Rain sat at their spot outside by the bleachers. Their spot was this medium-sized red oak tree that had been there before the school itself. It had two big rocks that Rain and Shaneil often used as seats.

Rain had pulled out her lunch bag and grimaced at the now soggy white bread and smashed ham cheese sandwich. She was in a rush today and she must have smashed her book sack when she was at my Momma's house. She put the sandwich back up and just waited for Shaneil to pop up.

Three minutes later Shaneil popped up with her pink backpack sparkling in view. Rain shook her head as Shaneil tripped over air and got back up.

"Bonjour, drip drop, "Shaneil said in greeting, giving her a quick hug. Rain pushed her away frowning at her antics. "Don't call me that Shay."

Shaneil just shrugged her off before sitting down and pulling out a container from her book sack. Rain glanced at it before sighing and turning her way. "What's it gonna be today?" She asked referring to the container of food Shaneil always brings.

"Uh cauliflower, tomato soup, and some red jello," Shaneil said while pulling everything out and her fork. Shaneil doesn't like cafeteria food and always brings meals instead of an actual lunch to school. But for some reason, they are always odd things that don't go together at all.

Rain wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Gross, Shay one day you're gonna get really sick from eating all of this stuff and I'm going to be the one to say I told you so." Rain promised before laying down on the grass looking up at the sky.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. Anyways you know that girl, Tiffany?" Shaneil said towering over Rain looking into her eyes. Rain pushed Shaneil back and sat up a little, leaning on her elbows.

"Yeah what about her?"Rain asked, confused.

"She's been trying to spread rumors about me. Darcy, that girl who always tries to hang with us, told me that she saw Tiffany going into the principal's office looking through my records to get some dirt on me." Shaneil informed her while starting to eat her pasta.

Rain sat up at that news now completely bewildered. "Why would she do that?" Shaneil smirked, letting out a light laughter.

"Remember Lyon, my ex-boyfriend," Shaneil started. Rain nodded, still confused. "Turns out he and Tiffany used to have a thing. Lyon wanted to get back together with me and I guess Tiffany must be feeling some type of way about that. I don't know why though. Regardless of what she does he still won't want her anymore." Shaneil said full out laughing now before her face took on a dark look.

"Tiffany is trying to get me expelled again. She's so freaking jealous of me that she wants me gone. Rain, I'm going to end up hurting her if she keeps messing with me. I'm trying to give this girl a break. But Rain as soon as she does just one more thing, game over." Shaneil stated.

Rain sighed in exhaustion so much for a normal day. Tiffany was a slut and she didn't need to be. The girl was smart, pretty, and talented. So no one could really understand why she did the stuff she did. It was really unnecessary when you thought about it because the guys all wanted her anyway. So Rain couldn't figure out why she was gunning for Shaneil knowing how she was.

"Shaneil you already know what's going to happen if you do that. You're going to jail and you will be kicked out of school. You're doing good so far, don't let no stupid boy and girl get in your way. Besides you're my best friend, how am I supposed to survive high school without you? If it becomes too much of a problem let me know, I'll figure something out." Rain said giving Shaneil an awkward side hug.

She started packing up seeing Darcy and Peony coming. Shaneil groaned in annoyance. "Don't leave me with them, please Rain." She pleaded with me.

"Hey, Rain!" The twins yelled in unison, making Rain's eyes widen in panic.

Darcy and Peony are the gossip twins. Nobody likes them. Why? Well, let just say that they're nosy. Not to mention bossy. Their father helps fund the school making them think that they own everybody in it and that they have the right to know everything going on in everyone's lives. Shaneil and Rain have seen those two destroy people and didn't want to be affiliated with them in any form. But the twins had taken it upon themselves to announcing falsely that Shaneil and Rain were their best friends

Rain can't even remember how many times Shaneil and her tried to ditch them. They changed their schedules, switched their habits, made false plans, gave them money, and even attempted to switch schools but those two just cannot be curved.

Rain packed up quickly. "Sorry gotta go. You know how it is, later alligator." Rain said smiling unapologetic before bidding Shaneil goodbye and leaving just as the duo reached their spot.

Rain glanced at her Adventure Time watch and saw that she had 15 minutes left until lunch was over. She made a dash to the library not wanting to be late.

When she got there she sat on top of one of the shelves and pulled out a random book trying to pass time. A guy came up to her and pushed her gently making her frown at him as he glared at her accusingly.

He had black dorky glasses, soft brown eyes, braces, and a kind smile. "You're late again, Love." He said, lifting Rain down from off the shelf. "Sorry, Wilson. I had some stuff to do, you know the usual." Rain said, giving him a long hug. She hadn't seen him all day after all.

Darnell Wilson was Rain's other best friend. They met long before Shaneil but strangely enough, Shaneil and Darnell have never met before. That was because Darnell was slightly afraid of Shaneil, which was extremely reasonable. The girl has questionable issues. But due to them never really formally meeting each other it makes things awkward between them a bit. So Rain, just never mentions the other person when she's with them.

"Oh good, I was starting to think you ditched me again Love," Darnell said taking off his glasses and sitting down in a nearby chair. Rain took a seat next to him as he handed her a bag of chips. "Me! Ditch you! Never Wilson." She said making him laugh.

"Whatever the bells about to ring. I'll pick you up from Momma's house, then after work, you're spending the night again okay?" He asked looking up at her while she leaned back in the chair.

"Movie night?" Rain asked shyly. Darnell nodded making Rain smile.

"Okay see ya later Wilson." She said getting up and preparing to leave again. Darnell stood up with her and wrapped her in a tight hug. He later kissed her forehead before letting her go. "Till next time, Love." He said dramatically, making Rain laugh as he disappeared from around the corner.

"Only two more hours to go." Rain whispered quietly to herself as the bell rang once again. She looked after the spot Darnell disappeared at before clearing her head and heading out too.

Only two more hours
