Riddle Me

Mr. Joe walked out of his office to see Rain serving a customer. It's been awhile since he's seen her because of the amount of paperwork he had to do in his office. Tax seasons were coming up soon and he just didn't have the time. But since he thinks of Rain as his little niece he decided to give her a pop up visit.

"Rain my girl come here." He called out. Rain looked around confused at first. But when she saw Mr. Joe a huge smile came upon her face and she wished into his arms.

"You're getting so big!" He commented, making Rain laugh. "You saw me last week. I'm literally the same as before." She replied, shaking her head.

Mr. Joe moved back out of the hug and observed Rain with a thoughtful expression.

"Are you sure? I may be old but I'm not losing my vision yet. You look like you grew a couple of inches. Must've been racking up on your vitamins huh," Mr. Joe joked.

Rain playfully hit his shoulder and rolled her eyes. "You're always making fun of me. Leave me alone before I tell Momma about you." Rain joked back before picking up her notepad off the counter getting ready to take another customer's order.

Mr. Joe snorted clearly unafraid. "Oh please what is Jezebel going to do to me?"

"You wouldn't be saying that if she was here and you know it." Rain said, beginning to walk away.

"She's like a kitten. Why would I be scared of that? She can't hurt a fly." Mr. Joe commented back arrogantly. Rain just rolled her eyes at him. She already knew that if it ever came down to it, Momma would rip him to shreds without even blinking an eye. Mr. Joe was putting on an act but Rain knew without a doubt that he was afraid of Momma.

"Chicken." She whispered under her breath before walking to serve another customer. Mr. Joe had heard what Rain said about him since she was very bad at whispering but decided to let it go. He needed to finish some files in his office anyway.

"Hello, my name is Rain. I will be your waitress for today. What can I get for you?" Rain asked, smiling politely at the customer. Her customer for today was three of the jocks from the football team. Rain guessed they were ditching practice today and looking at how many losses they were having so far this season, they couldn't afford to.

"I would like a strawberry milkshake and waffle fries... They want two burgers and a coke." The team quarterback said. Rain nodded her head, writing down their order. "Will that be all for you guys today?" She asked. He nodded before turning back to his friends, dismissing Rain completely.

Rain shook her head at this and went back to hand in their order. The bell on the door rang signaling someone had just walked as Rain was almost there. Rain sighed and handed the order to Sasha who was taking a nap by the register before going to greet the customer.

Rain walked towards the booth pulling her notebook out and preparing to take their order. "Hello, my name is Rain. I will be your waitress for today. What would you like?" She asked looking up. Rain gave a startled gasp when she saw Darnell looking at her smirking.

"Um, yes so I heard that the burgers here were good so I'll think I'll have that." He said, smirking. Rain gave him a playful mug before shoving him a little. She hated when he smirked at her. He would always become overly cocky and make rude comments.

"Shut up idiot. What are you doing here?" She asked sterning with her hands on her hips. Darnell sighed dramatically and turned away from her. "I came all the way down here, to visit you and the only thing you can say is "why am I here?" Oh the audacity of some people--I just can not deal with this right now." Darnell said, falling into his seat and crossing his arms with a playful glint in his eyes.

Rain wacked Darnell on the head with her notepad and ignored his yelp of pain."Whatever, sit here and wait on me. I'm going to bring you something since it seems as though you're at practice too." Rain instructed.

Rain walked to the back and ordered Darnell a burger and fries. She waited patiently as Mindy the cook prepared the food for him.

Once Mindy was done she sat the food on the counter for Rain to pick up and she brought it to his table. Darnell was staring into space at his phone with a lazy grin, obviously up to something.

Rain sat the plate down on the table and sat across from him in the booth.

"So, you skipped practice?" She asked, taking a fry from his plate. Darnell swatted her hand away from his phone and narrowed his eyes at her. "No, we got out early and I was bored. Also stay away from my food Love. You don't want to get hurt." He warned. Rain rolled her eyes at Darnell's weak threat before reaching out to grab another. Darnell swatted her hand again making Rain wince and frown at him.

"Okay, geesh I got it. Food is off limits." She muttered, rubbing her poor hand. Darnell nodded satisfied before taking a bite out of his burger.

"Man, this is delicious! I need to come here more often!" He exclaimed with his mouth full making Rain giggle. "Eww close your mouth pig! That's disgusting." She said smiling.

Now it was Darnell's time to roll his eyes at her. He swallowed the rest of his burger and took a sip of his drink before responding. "Love, let's not forget how you gobbled down that entire tray of ham by yourself at my family's thanksgiving dinner and how you also had milk dripping down your chin when we went out for breakfast at a restaurant," Darnell replied, exposing Rain. Rain blushed deeply and sent a light jab at his arm.

"Whatever you still eat like a pig." She started getting up. "And even pigs have more class at the dinner table than you."Darnell clapped back before he waved her away wanting to focus on his meal. Rain scoffed, feeling embarrassed and walked away from him. She would have to get him back for that later.

Rain left Darnell in peace and went back to work. She was taking the order from what looked like a young teen mother and her child when Sasha came running in Rain's direction out of breath. Rain caught herself as Sasha stumbled into her and excited herself from their table.

"Sasha what now? I'm working," Rain asked, annoyed. Sasha just ignored Rain and kept smiling with a big cheesy grin on her face. "My soulmate Rain! He's here--the tattoos-- omg dimples! Rain I'm in love." She gushed out.

Rain grimaced and gave Sasha a small nudge away from her. Rain really did not feel like dealing with a boy crazy Sasha today. "Okay Sasha, what do you want me to do?" Rain asked me to give up. She just hoped Mr. Joe didn't come out of his office to see her slacking on the job.

Sasha grabbed Rain's arm excitedly and began to drag her behind the counter. "I just want you to look at him. Wait no, talk to him for him. Please!" Sasha begged with puppy eyes.

"Boy crazy! Completely crazy! Why me? Why?" Rain thought in her head. Her life was truly pure agony.

Rain let out a breath of agony and sighed. She already knew she was going to regret this. But if it would get Sasha to leave her alone for the rest of her shift, then so be it.

"Okay so where is he?" Rain asked, looking around. Sasha eagerly tugged on Rain's arm and moved her body in a certain direction. Rain looked in the direction Sasha moved her into confusion not seeing anybody who looked new. "I don't see him." Rain started to confuse me.

Sasha shook her head at Rain and rolled her eyes before pointing at someone.

"Him."

"Who?"

"Him!"

"Where is he?"

"With the leather jacket! Him! The only one with a leather jacket!"

"Wh--oh wait! I see him."

"Wait a minute. Him!" Rain shouted in shock.

"Yes! Isn't he perfect." Sasha gushed, sighing. Rain ignored Sasha and focused on the guy in the leather jacket sitting in a booth alone with his earphones in. "What is Tye doing here?" Rain asked out loud, surprised.

Sasha gripped Rain's arm tightly and started jumping up and down. "You know him! Omg this is perfect. you have to introduce me." She said, Rain frowned at her before removing Sasha's hand off of her.

"I mean, I don't know him well, and he doesn't really give off overly friendly vibes," Rain told her unsure. Sasha pouted upset at this news.

"Please at least think about it."

"Okay I will." Rain promised her before walking towards Tye's table. She hears Sasha let out another squeal of excitement and shakes her head. That girl was never going to change.

Rain came up behind Tye's shoulder and peeked over at his phone. It looked like he was playing angry birds but Rain wasn't sure. Tye felt a presence behind him and slowly sat his phone down.

"What?" He asked in a cold emotionless voice. Rain blinked a little, taken back at his cold demeanor before shaking it off. "Well hi to you too." Rain grumbled sarcastically. Tye turned around surprised before a small smile came across his face.

"Oh, kid it's you. What are you doing here?" Tye asked, smiling. Rain frowned at being called a kid but still ended up smiling back. "Yeah I work here." Rain explained scratching the back of her neck nervously.

"Well that would explain the uniform. So I guess you're here to take my order," He observed. Rain shook her head negatively. "No, not really. I just wanted to say hi. Even though I really am supposed to be working right now. Now that I think about it, why am I not working right now? If Mr. Joe finds out I'm dead and-"

Tye put his hand on Rain's mouth, shutting her up. "If I had known that you rambled a lot beforehand, I would've just left you in the hall." He joked, making Rain glare at him and move his hand away from her mouth.

"Stop being rude. I'm trying here." Rain whined frustrated, making Tye chuckle. "Sorry," He apologized before hesitating. Rain could tell he wanted to ask her something.

"Look Rain I was wondering if, maybe of you weren't busy-"

"Love, I'm done!" Darnell shouted, popping up behind Rain's shoulder. Rain glanced at Tye and saw his jaw clench and eyes darken. "Okay Wilson, I can see that." Rain observed laughing. Darnell had some ketchup on the corner of his mouth and looked plain ridiculous with that goofy smile of his.

Rain grabbed him a napkin and pointed at the stain and smiled when she saw Darnell's cheeks darker a bit embarrassed.

"Shut up." He muttered shyly. Rain rolled her eyes at him and turned back to Tye. "You were asking me something?" She questioned politely. Tye's eyes softened and he looked down at the ground.

"Yeah, I wanted to ask if maybe you and I," Tye stopped speaking and sent a look of pure hate at Darnell as he turned Rain around to face him, interrupting him again.

"Love, you're coming with me tonight okay. I know that your mom wants you home tonight but I need your help. So, get ready for another awkward dinner with my family." Darnell said, completely talking over Tye.

Rain looked at Darnell weird out. He never acted like this before. He was being completely territorial and almost hostile. Rain had no idea what was the cause of this behavior.

"Ah dude, I was just talking to her about something. You sure you can't tell her later? I mean everytime I try to speak you cut me off." Tye stressed getting pissed. Darnell merely shrugged his words off and waited for my answer.

Tye clearly did not like being ignored and walked in between them before staring Darnell down in the face. Tension sprayed between the two of them and Rain was just caught in the crossfire of it. "I don't know whether you're trying to intimidate or make me laugh in your face. Now if you could just get out of my personal space we'll be good." Darnell smirked, moving his hands around to emphasize personal space.

"Do you have a problem with me because we can fix it right now." Tye announced with eyes promising death. "Oh no, Darnell's gonna get himself killed. I don't want to have to explain a black eye to his Mom." Rain thought, panicking.

They stood glaring at each other for a few minutes before Darnell's phone rang, breaking the tension between them two. Darnell broke eye contact and pulled his phone out of his pocket checking the caller ID.

Darnell sighed and leaned in to give Rain a short hug. "This is stupid. Rain I gotta go. My Mom wants me to run errands for her. I'll pick you up after work okay."

Rain hugged him back before letting him walk away. Darnell glanced back at Tye for a quick second before laughing and shaking his head.

Once Darnell had left Tye turned to look at Rain outraged. "Yo kid, what the hell was his problem?" Tye asked, upset. Rain punched him on the shoulder.

"Ouch." Tye frowned. Rain gave him a mean look as he rubbed the spot where she hit him at.

"Watch your language." Rain threatened. Tye rolled his eyes at this and sat back down.

"I don't know what was wrong with him. He never acts like this usually I promise. He must have been having an off day or something." Rain said, sounding doubtful.

"I don't care what kind of day he's been having. He better watch his back." Tye thought upset at being cut off by a guy with braces.

"But...I have to get back to work, so I'll see you later." Rain smiled slightly before giving Tye a small pat on the back and walking away.

Tye watched Rain leave feeling disappointed. He was really going to ask her something important. It already took him all day just to come up with the confidence to do it. Which confused him the most. Tye never used to have a problem asking a girl out on a date.

But there was just something about Rain that Tye couldn't put his finger on.
