Hey Mom

Rain stood outside her house a little nervous to go in. She hadn't seen her mother in so long. She knew she was busy taking care of bills and stuff but Rian felt left out. What would she even say to her?

" Rain, go in," Shaneil said encouragingly. Rain took a deep breath and entered the house.

When Rain walked inside the first thing she smelled was coffee. A signature smell in the house that had been almost doormat. On the wall, there were pictures of Rain and her mother from when she was younger. Feeling a bit of nostalgia Rains nose turned a bit sour. It wasn't always like this with her mom after all. They use to be together every day but ever since that incident things have changed. Looking up, Rain saw her Mother sitting at the dining table talking on the phone and her heart sank.

She was always on that phone. Noticing that her mother didn't even sense her presence yet, Rain forced a smile before walking up making her presence known. "Hey, Mom." She said shyly.

Looking up for a second her Mom gave Rain a short nod of acknowledgment before going back to her conversation. Rain felt slightly crushed and walked away from the table heading upstairs to put away her bag with Shaneil in tow.

"Girl...are you okay?" Shaneil asked, rubbing her back comfortingly. She knew how Rain felt about her mother. "Yeah, I'm fine." Rain lied, sitting her backpack down and heading downstairs again. She needed to breathe. " I can do this." She thought to herself.

"Oh for sure. I can get that information for you as soon as possible." As Rain headed downstairs she could hear her mom wrapping things up with a client. Her mother worked primarily with clients who have been in car accidents and since so many accidents happen-- her work was never finished.

"Yeah, a matter of fact next week, meet with me and we can discuss these details in more depth. --I completely understand and I sympathize with your situation. Stay safe, I'll be calling to check up with you in a few. Goodbye." Hanging up the phone, Rain's mom took a step from the table smiling brightly.

"Ugh finally. All this work is driving me crazy. Rain sweetie come here so I can look at you properly." Said her mom walking towards her arms open. Rain numbly walked to her mom to give her a hug. Her mom grabbed her face, inspecting it in serious depth. "You look a bit thin? Have you been eating?"

"Yes, I do not look thin. Momma's been feeding me like I've been locked up for 20 years." Rain said, smiling. "Girl you could've fooled me. You look like a starving chicken." Her mom retorted playfully, letting her go.

"Shaneil, you look beautiful as ever. I hope you have been staying out of trouble." Her mom sternly said, making Shaneil look down nervously. " I've been trying my best."

"Well, try a little harder, young lady. I don't want to have to be your lawyer anytime soon." She said laughing while walking into the kitchen. "So how are your grades looking, guys? Straight A's I'm assuming."

" Mom, can we not talk about grades right now? I haven't seen you in weeks." Rain complained following her into the kitchen. Going in the fridge for a drink, and closing the door you could see a picture of Rain's dad. Catching her mother's eye, everyone just paused. The smile on her mother's face faded a little. "I'm sorry, but we have bills and I have to work. We've talked about this."

"I know we did but mom, I really miss you." Rain said tearing up. Shaneil excused herself from the room, letting them have their moment.

"You know, your Dad would come home when you were a baby and the first thing he did was, pick you up and sing you a song," Her mom said walking over to embrace her daughter. " He would feed you, play with you, and then look at me. He would say " I have everything I need."

" Rain I missed you too but, I'm alone." Her mom said sadly. " My support is gone. It's tough but be a big girl. I'm not working for myself."

'You're not working for me either.' Rain complained in her heart.
