Poem 10

I turned my tail and

Ran, darting across

Blades of grass and

Ignoring the shouts

My paws left behind.

Moonbeams cast silver

Light on the staircase

That creaked and

Shuddered along with

My forlorn sighs.

Hardly anyone was

Stirring, all was quiet

In the nightly hour.

Until the dawn broke.

...

I bid farewell to the

Crinkled pages that

Dripped with vile ink.

Ever so torn and scattered

Amongst weary and worn

Chippered-at wood along

With a stained cloth, drying

Underneath dark brewed

Coffee as it steeped.

The steam seeped lowly

As I hid under the table,

Patiently still, waiting.

A sigh was then heaved

From a bitten tongue, all

Barren and frigid like a

White winter snowfall.

I dared not to rest my eyes.

...

My paw had swollen after

I tore off the white cloth

That was wrapped around it.

Humans are terrible healers.

Ignoring the scuffed marks

That bore my jagged skin,

I tread carefully above the

Unveiled whispers that hung

Like tapered string under

The vent where I lay hidden.

Sky blue eyes graced my

Unsteady gaze as I

Wistfully peered down.

Whiskers twitching,

I leaped down and shook

Out my fur as dust fell.

I was in that vent for

Too long, it seems.

...

I heard a shallow squeal

As I lifted my chin up.

Sky blue stared back,

Unwavering as a shrill

Cry tore itself from the

Human's tight-knitted

Throat, reeling back.

I flattened my ears

At the pitched sound.

"What are you doing

Here, huh cat? Did you

Want something from me?"

My tail flicked, curling

Up as I stared back,

Still and unfaltering.

...

The human huffed.

"Right, of course you

Can't understand a

Word I say…"

She grumbled something

Else under her breath,

Before crouching down.

Her opened palm rested

Loosely on her bare knee.

My ear twitched with

Faint interest as I

Neared the human.

Trust, already?

...

She drew back slightly

As I tentatively sniffed

Her open hand, nosing it.

She drawled with a

High-pitched voice

In her cryptic tongue.

"What are you doing?"

Her breath faltered,

Unease in her gaze.

I laced my tail around

Her leg as I blinked up

At the unsure human.

...

After a mere moment's

Passing, I ducked down

And let my eyes briefly

Flutter shut as I nudged

Her hand with my head.

The human's fingertips

Tousled the fur on my

Cheek as she relaxed.

A breathy chuckle

Slipped into the quiet

Air as she smiled.

"Y'know, you aren't

So bad little one..."

My purr was humble,

Like a morning birdsong.

Her sky blue eyes held peace.
