Thorolund I

My nights were usually calm. No dreams to guide my unconscious mind to mystical locations, nay new possibilities unraveled by sweat images of my imagination. A simple rest, with the lest being three hours, before a new morning is ready to announce the coming of new responsibilities, the impeding atrocious shift and any new problems I would have to tackle.

Generally, a deep slumber to recharge a portion of myself that is in dire need of rest. A novelty my body was craving most of the time.

It came as quite a surprise when last night was a rare exception to that established rule. In a forest with no pollution to steal my breath and melt my lungs, stars adorning the sky and no troubling matters I managed to sleep blissfully.

What I experienced can only be described amazing, inconceivable for my resourcefulness to draw upon.

A place I knew all too well. Equipment slighter better to my current gear. Someone I knew all too well.

I saw my avatar in the fantastical world of Yggdrasil. My start to the massive game. A cornerstone of our lives my brother enjoyed immensely. Not to withdraw my very own love for the virtual Mmo.

However, no rocky start with predetermined moves was depicted. Neither a constant mask of indifference with a small smirk nor programmed characters to permeate the World Tree.

Rather, a grand adventure a character embarked by the perilous withering Realms of Yggdrasill. Plain quests changed extraordinary missions. Fights against mobs-enemies of no importance any player annihilates effortlessly- battles of hundreds adversary against Luci*fer. Npcs-non playable characters- were altered to palpable figures, their tone expressing genuine emotions and their struggles real.

Luci*fer or I, talked not to floating boxes of written words, to select the next narrative option, but living beings.

The distinction between my in-game Avatar and myself... null. As if I was undertaking the Quest to uncover why Realms disappeared.

Observing mechanical battles across the nine Worlds to fantastical engagement towards insurmountable odds adjacent foes of ludicrous prowess. The bosses.

The Upper planes in all of their majesty, fighting numerous enemies to gain a new level of strength- their remains Data Crystals and Gold, acquiring loot and even teaming with my guild mates in Ainz Ooal Gown.

My unlikely dream ended after we defeated a boss named Necron, the physical manifestation of Necronomicon. It was a quest where upon completion, the player dealing the killing blow gets an item called [Essence of Death], allowing an undead player to evolve into an [Overlord].

I woke up just as it was Zahei's turn to keep watch. After bidding him good morning, I informed my plans of taking the river to freshen up. Leaving not before a warning to be careful, I was on my way to the river bank, conversing with Rose about my theories.

'Rose, do you remember what we've seen?'

[Indeed. It seems these were the memories of this body. If you did not possess the connection you do, an ego would appear and influence the one inhabiting the physical vessel through the display of memories. An influence that would-probably- change the character from said person. But as the original creator-or better player- and the one who controlled it, the ego acknowledges you as the original.]

Humming quietly, I kept walking, my body on auto-pilot while my mind tried to piece together all the information presented. Rose was far more capable to keep watch of [Map]. Something I would never ask of her without a good reason.

Though she always does it! My adorable companion is the best!

'This body probably understands who I am. The character was also similar.', I continue my trek as I small smile overtook my features at her embarrassment and redness due to my honest praise, 'After all, it was me controlling the Avatar. The battles and talks with every Npc and guildmates were slightly different. The former had far more changes considering the essential difference between a computer programme and a breathing entity. For the latter, they had facial features that moved. Something impossible for Yggdrassil despite its innovations. Some of the interactions with the Npcs were completely new...'

I breathe a sigh. My mind reached one concussion baring many resemblances with another similar instance such an occasion happened.

'This is a type moon case, isn't it...'

Another sigh, Rose noticed a couple of red dots in my mini-map. A quick observation showed no one from the party followed me, I placed my bag in the [Inventory]-as if I was going to simply let it lay there-, retrieved my sword and proceed to fight them.

The [Map] itself was an interesting study, with extraordinary results. If a person appears, were they not an ally or enemy, it should not show them. That knowledge is from Yggdrasill and the Mini-map players had. Yet, [Map] showcased the Goblin slayer group as grey dots. Throughout the conversation they transitioned to blue dots, indicating that they were currently allies or amiable. Unfortunately, no definite conclusions were reached as the case requires further investigation.

A simple comparison took place with all the gathered evidence at hand. All monsters attack on sight and appear on the [Map] as red dots. Zahei's group were grey before I met them- possible neutral- and afterwards blue.

Additionally, no surveillance spell was utilized to correspond with any location I might happen upon. Instead, the ability in itself indicated anything or anyone of importance. Suffice to say, unless they use an ability or spell the [Map] will show them.

Again, fragmentary research. It needs further study, since the dot that indicated Tuka dimmed when she tried to sneak up on me.

Appearing in a clearing I see a group of fives goblins, with three having clubs and the other two short swords. Before they can spot me, I unhesitatingly rush towards them.

Thankfully my stats are constantly updated. Currently they have ar quite upgraded, signifying not only my magical growth in efficiency, but also the physical attributes.

Even before one of them screeched I already cut the nearest one with my blade, diagonally. A punch was thrown to tis companion on the right with my unoccupied left hand.

A regular punch without any fanfare, managed to cave its head in. Deforming its greenish features.

Ahead of the other three green smucks I used my [Aura of Heaven I], boosting my stats by a small margin yet noticeable margin. A golden light glued unto my frame. A lunge was the element that got them out of their stupor, late enough for the right one to be decapitated.

That is one of the few abilities I can use effectively and efficiently after my first fight. [Aura of The Primal Beast I] would be too strong for these types of enemies, beside injuring me.

It is quite stronger- a lot more- than its "predecessor". The effects can be quite...bad to whomever I use it on.

Plunging my blade to the neck of the little green monster that tried to strike me with its club, assuming it could get a lucky hit in. The last on was caught by the neck when it tried to run and my blade met its head.

Seeing that all monsters turned to dust, I pick up their cores and continue my walk through the woods.

Thank Akasha for [Gamer's Mind]!

I genuinely fail to express my gratitude!

My abilities aside, which I "grinded" and trained all day yesterday- allowed me to perform superhuman feats that were unimaginable to my previous self. Still my mind was the main factor that allowed me to be as efficient as I was.

Some might admonish the way I kill- defeated the monsters, my senses weren't overloaded by the sheer shock of kill- defending. Instead, no inhibitions suppressed my capacity to deal with any enemies.

'Like my Avatar I suppose.', a morbid thought that was overtaken by a little detail.

'Might have to tone down the brutality since the party could not condone said way... Then again, they are-', stopping myself from commit a dumb mistake, I shake my head to clear any lingering thoughts.

'Not the same as their fictious counterpart.'

In any case, it would be a good way to learn to hold back a little and fight with other people. Akasha forbid I irreversible hurt someone due to careless.

[Ufufu~. While you are right to think things through, I will have to agree with your previous conclusion.]

'I thought so....'

[Yet there are some differences. What you experienced can be classified as the same example of Masters and Servants. They share a deep mental connection, so it has been observed that both can see visions of each other's pasts in the form of dreams. Since you are the original Player of this body, the ego of Luci*fer will not try to influence you, essentially being the very same. At the same time, along with similarities they exist obvious differences outside the phycological traits.]

Having reached the river, I squat down to throw some to clean my face. My attention on Rose never left.

[Your History, the very principle that defines your origin, abilities and past, is a programmer of an Earth that experienced a Third World War. Due to nuclear warfare, pollution prevailed over the surface.]

An adult man. Black unkempt hair, brown eyes. A handsome appearance destroyed by the constant bags under his eyes. A small smile on his face. He appeared on the surface of the river.

[At the same time, you are Luci*fer, the angel that created a guild with heteromorphs, calling one of them brother, in the ever-distant land of a World Tree. Only nine worlds remained and the World was named Yggdrasil. Many monstrosities, demons, angels, gods, horror outside the boundary prowl the decaying Universal Tree. All with their own "lore" or narrative in the World, dictating how powerful they were. World ending threats and heroes said to be unmatched. Luci*fer was One of the very first primal beasts, that is known as the supreme primarch who commands all other archangels, the main protector of Heaven.]

A beautiful male. His eyes shining a sky-blue whose purity was overshadowed by his white hair. Three pairs of beautiful snow-clear wings on his back. A smile plastered on his lips.

[Yet he betrayed Heaven when humans who got blessed with great power, condemned his family for their race and started hunting those that were like them. His betrayal turned the one shining beacon of Hope to the first true Fallen Angel.]

The very same man, his hair a silver and eyes crimson. His wings like that of a crow. Black as the night. Still smiling.

[Even when, those same beings that prosecuted heteromorphs created a mighty alliance of 1500, each surpassing the meaning of a deity- entities who reached level 100- capable of easily killing a god, were defeated by him and the other 40 of his family in their own base that those foolish beings tried to invade. Defeating along with his allies, monsters unimaginable to the human mind. From entities as strong as a meteoric turtle to the Devourer of the Nine Worlds, to the Five Rainbow Buddhas, The seven deadly Sins and the Ten Archangels of Sephira. But his journey did not end there! Amassing even greater power he stayed with his brother, whereas the rest of guild members started leaving. Bosses that would need a party of 6 beings of the highest level, fell by him alone.]

Lastly, the man from before emerged. His wings interior a bloody crimson. Eyes the colour silver danced dangerously. His power supreme. His lips quirked upwards.

All distinct in appearance...

Yet same inner qualities...

What can I even say?

Unbelievable would be a start but a question remains.

'Since this body could not exist without me, the ego will not try to influence me and I get to see a more original and rich history of my character?

[Precisely~! You and your avatar are two alien, to each other, existences. Yet without you it could not exist. Though if you picked another body, its ego could influence your character. It cannot take over, since it is a shell that houses your soul. The history it experienced can be viewed through dreams and you can make some useful observations~!]

'True enough....'

For example, my starting equipment which was an assortment of low tier items is equal to the rank f of this World's item rankings. Despite the description the System gave my F rank sword the fact remains useful information could gleam from these Dream Cycles. The lowest in Yggdrasill is equal to the fourth lowest in Danmachi.

Additionally, my stats equal the stats of a player around level seven in Yggdrasil. Though that is in a comparison between raw stats since a level seven Player can be far more dangerous than an Adventurer of equal power.

It all comes down to variety of factors. Players have the ability to choose the role they want to play as. Whether that be a tank, a mage, an assassin and so on. Spells with no requirement of a substantial chant, weapons that house unbelievable power. In Danmachi all adventurers have a similar start. They cannot choose their specialization and only play a role they want and are able to. Spell require chants, equipment is lacking and no diversity in their skill set unless they were the cream of the top.

Pulling my bag out of the inventory, I finish my thoughts as i observe five blue dots coming towards me.

'Well time to get to Thorolund...', while I release a tired sigh

[Aww~? What's wrong? Cold Feet~?], came the teasing voice of Rose.

'Not really.', I easily dismiss, narrowing me gaze in thought, 'I find it weird how I appear in the Western Forest, around the time a similar party to Goblin Slayer chased a monster to that location and they managed to meet me'

[…So, you think there is a reason for Akasha to bring you here specifically.]

'She is at the very top. Making such a coincidence happen would be child's play as far as I'm concerned.', another rueful sigh,' Which indicates something amiss.'

[...In any case you should be careful.], Rose spoke slightly troubled.

Nodding my head, I see the team of five appearing before me. The four sans Zahei having different reaction. Zoltan a grin, Balrom a respectful nod, Kiyoko a radiant smile and Tuka has a dumbfounded face.

"Yo! Let's go hunt an Ogre!", came my voice as cheerful as possible~

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Walking towards Thorolund with a party was a reminiscent experience to say in the least. Doubly so with my dream. But as to not appear complacent, I drowned those thoughts and focused on the mission.

While the party was a little surprised by the accord me and Zahei made, they were more than happy from what I've picked. I do hope it is in part with my inclusion rather their leader's choice!

Though Tuka had some rather colorful words to describe my "choice" of following the party, even though I am more than qualified to support them as far as they know.

"You know~. If I didn't know better, I'd say you are worried about me~?"

"N-no you idiot! It's just an Ogre is much different than a Hobgoblin! Plus, we are hunting a variant one! We are all level two and it was already going to be a tough fight with only us!"

Variant monsters or strengthened species are monsters that have evolved from their normal form, to a new more powerful one. They possess greater intelligence and sometimes new abilities. Usually, they are a level greater than their previous primitive siblings. A regular Ogre would be on the spectrum of a higher end level 2 monster. This variant one is speculated to be level 3 and it possess fire magic.

"Yes, I am well aware.", nodding my head, an amused smile comes naturally, "I will follow the plan you have created to fight the Ogre. I can provide protection to Kiyoko and draw aggro of the weaker monsters. Defeating some is also something I can do. So, no problem!"

Seeing her not quite convinced I go for the killing blow!

"Plus, I couldn't in good consciousness simply let you go and face the danger alone! You owe me a date after all!"

Que her flushing face and stuttering. How could I not tease someone who not only is a tsundere-she also has so many cute and entertaining reactions?! Twas Impossible!

Hearing the laughter of Balrom , I turn him with an eyebrow raised

"Do excuse me. I simply find your conviction admirable young Akira."

"Just call me Akira. While I am young, referring me as such all the time isn't necessary."

Nodding his head, I turn to Kiyoko who fidgets before speaking

"Ano... Akira what abilities do you possess?", while titling her head, a moment later her cheeks flushed as she waves frantically her arms, "N-not th-that you have to say! I-I'm simply curious..."

"I am not a real mage unfortunately.", I answered with a kind smile, "But I have a particular powerful ability!"

"Hoh? And what might that be? Is it similar to the one you used to get a date out of long ears laddie? Quite voracious aren't ya~", came the teasing voice of Zoltan, making Kiyoko blush while I continued smiling.

To be honest I do not want to showcase my abilities. The full capacity of [Map] will stay a secret out of its sheer options available. However, I want to showcase my "trump card" in order to get even more faith out of them. Naturally, the fact it is only a tier 3 spell reveals practically nothing~!

"Well, we are going to be comrades to fight a monster. In order to create trust between us I am willing to show you one of my secrets. It could be a life saver and I believe our fearless leader would find it useful!", a chirpy voice was utilized to-

"Please be a little more serious and stop the theatrics", came the voice of our fearless leader accompanied by a sigh.

Shrugging my shoulders, I came to stop gaining some intrigued looks from the party. Lifting my left hand, I point a finger at a big rock. A simple word leaves my lips.

"[Lightning]"

As its namesake, a lightning bolt manifested out of my outstretched finger and shot in a straight line to my intended target, piercing with no difficulty the rock and coming out of its back.

While wearing a smirk to their stupefied expressions-I think Zahei has one anyway! -, I casually ask.

"So~ How was this little ability of mine~"

Only to be followed by emotionless questions of our helmet wearing leader.

"How many times can you cast it?"

"About ten times, but it depends on the power output."

"Can you increase its potency?", he asked with a hint of surprise

"Yes", the answer was accompanied by a small nod, "But I do not know its maximum power out, since I never used my whole mana pool to cast it. I only used a little amount of mana to cast it just now, making it weaker, since we are in a forest."

"I see. So, you wasted one charge to show-off?", his tone didn't show any real condemnation. An observation delivered boldly.

"Of course not.", I respond legitimately offended, "I used such a miniscule amount it doesn't count as one. Would you believe me otherwise?"

That did make him pause. Unequivocally placing trust on a person who claims to use a one-word spell is something only madmen would do.

He gave me a nod of understand as we continued moving towards our target.

"Can you cast other spells, without a chant?!", spoke rather enthusiastically Kiyoko, while her eyes were shining.

"Unfortunately, no. At least to my knowledge Kiyoko-chan.", my response did deflate her excitement, but my manner of address elicited a small blush from the young girl.

"Hah! Can't say I waited for that. I thought you were going to ask something in return!", said Zoltan cackling

"As I said we are comrades. It seems prudent to reveal such information.", a small shrug was added, since I spoke partially the truth on the matter, "We will fight a difficult fight so the more options we have the better."

Gaining an appreciative nod from him I listen to Balrom laughing merrily, only to stop when Tuka grabbed my shoulders and attempted to shake me while shouting.

I say attempted since, while I am amused by her mannerisms, I don't find enjoyment in being manhandled

"HOW DID YOU DO THAT!!??"

Well, she asked for it!

Raising my left hand, I place it on her head. I started moving my hand slowly, patting her head. She froze both in shock and bashfulness.

"First of all, please let me go.", I asked politely. She complied not before offering a look that spoke volumes on how I've wronged her.

"To cast [Lighting]. I speak the name of the spell and allocate a fluctuating amount of mana. It could be done as long as I remember finding it. Sufficient mana and concentration are required. On a side note, I can understand your surprise but I do not enjoy someone spontaneously trying to "shake" me to spill information. Just imagine how you would feel if our positions were changed.", towards the end I gave her a pointed look that got her to look away embarrassed. I don't possess an adversity to physical contact, yet someone trying to shake me like a pinata that will drop candy, is less than pleasing.

"Sorry...", she mumbles before her ears drop slightly, making my eyes widen

'THAT IS UNFAIR! Why does she look like a kicked puppy!'

[My, my~. Making a maiden sad. How prudish of you Akira~]

'Rose-chan it isn't what it looks!'

Coughing to get my embarrassment down and help calm my glowing red cheeks. I will get back at you my lovable Padawan!

"N-no problem. As long as you understand.", while inwardly cursing the fact I stumbled at the beginning gaining some chuckles out of the Dwarf and a quiet comment of the Lizard-man about Young love as Zahei nods his head sagely and Kiyoko silently chuckles, further embarrassing me. My expression became dull.

"Right.", came a more energetic response from Tuka while her long ears raised up, making my brow twitch at how cute the spectacle before me is, "But what I meant is, how were you able to a simple word to cast the spell. The longer the chant the stronger the magic is. Usually to it would require you to be a level 4 to simple say a word and cast a spell that powerful!"

"As I said, it is a unique quality of mine. There is no a definite answer to provide sadly."

"As fun, as this is, we should discuss the plan going forward. With your inclusion we could change our original plan a little bit", calmly interjected Zahei.

"Fine by me.", stopping my pans on revenge for each party member, my attention captured by potential info. Maybe it could even alleviate some anxiety over the mission...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thorolund. The first city to be found inside the Western forest as an expansion of Orario for all. An additional benefit would be the safety its creation could provide to surrounding communities, protection and help.

Many Gods and Nobles advocated for such a center of civilization be constructed.

A grand plan with ample problems. Lurking monsters would present a serious problem during the city's actualization, along the steep cost for such an operation to be undertaken and travel roots for merchants to safely reach the city- providing their wares, thus establishing a form of economy.

A year of groundwork to establish its infancy was required with the constant danger of lurking monsters. Multiple potential locations to start. Another half a year to gather funds...

Originally, it was meant to be a stronghold city build in the heart of the Western forest, that could create the opportunity for different communities in the uninhabitable forest. Its military might comprised by people and adventurers alike, whom would be the protectors of the city. Fighting monsters that would surely prowl the forest and defeating bandits or any other criminal element. An ideal location adjusted so it won't stay an impossible dream.

Goddess Serida understanding enough that, for her ideal city to be built- years are needed.

An impressive city of a bygone age. It flourished for a decade despite its overly ambitious beginning and problems that arose during its success.

Merchants who desired too advantageous contracts due to the peril behind the city's location. Nobles ready to announce their "own" nation- to demand independence from the King of Orario and Ouranos. Gods craving on climbing the social ladder of a new and exciting project, since they couldn't compete with the Familias at Orario.

Those being few of the headaches for Serida, founder and chief member of Throrolund's foundation. In the process her Familia established its standing as the strongest in the newly appointed city.

A city of wonder. An innovation spearhead by both the Goddess of Sunlight and her beloved champion.

The destruction of which was both filled in mystery and wonder.

Not all the details are known, giving way for different theories to surface.

Any chance the reason fell because of the criminal side or a coup d'etat by the co-founder Familias weren't worth considering. Although it certainly didn't stop the general public to spread some unflattering rumors.

It's said that a great darkness engulfed the whole city. Its essence corrupting its inhabitants leading to monsters being created from any citizen, all of who attacked indistinctively. Civilians, adventurers, elderly, guards...all slaughtered. Their aim to simply spread destruction and mayhem.

However, two heroes emerged in those trying times!

A knight said to be as righteous as he was strong, fought the monstrosities within! Hordes of beast-former people the city housed- devoid of any compassion. Thousands of them created a day! Yet the knight fought with the ferocity of a wolf. Unyielding and efficient, he cut the numbers of his enemies trying to end the nightmare. Still... he was but one man. Defeating ceaselessly enemies would wear any hero down...

In the end, he too knowing his own limits made a decisive choice. To find the reason for the corruption and demise of the city. And find it he did....

The one who orchestrated the destruction of the city, a true beast that was said to be so vile and evil that its mere presence would decay the ground beneath, in mere moment! Its strength unfathomable to the simple mind while its form could instill fear to the bravest of hearts,

The knight unable to truly vanquish such a foe, was forced to his last remaining power to trap the monster. His shield as a catalyst, an artifact able to stand blows from dragons themselves, created a seal to imprison the monster.

Victory might he had achieved, Death cradled the Wolf Knight.

Before he could complete his mission, one he undertook to protect the dream of his beloved, serious injuries befell during the titanic battle. So severe pain clouded his mind, his dominant hand broken, bones cracked, blood loss...

Sooner, he tried to taste a potion alleviating his injuries, in that moment of weakness, the corruption that befell the city targeted the good knight himself.

.

.

Instead of the expected outcome though, the knight's will was so strong that instead of becoming a mindless monster hellbent on destruction, he become a berserk that hunted other anyone who came near the seal he placed.

A hero converted to an endless guardian.

His mind drowned in insanity, the unfulfilled vow he delivered for his love...

.

.

.

The story doesn't end there. Surprisingly enough, there waw a mention of two heroes.

Despite the previous bitter end of a legend, a new hero emerged.

She managed to best both the knight and after breaking the seal, defeat the terrible beast.

The later part is so minute, because the story symbolizes different aspects of life cantered around a true story.

Dangerous monsters ravaging a city because of a bad moment to extinguish the light of hope. The heroism of a knight making the ultimate sacrifice. A hero emerges, to tackle the calamity.

Frailty of life, self-sacrifice to prevent losses, only for a new harbinger of change to appear.

The meaning of Adventurers Romantized to heroes and protectors.

However, there is a disparity in information regarding the second hero.

Depending from person to person, each can have their own interpretation for this tale. She or he can be a warrior, a mage, they can have a party along to liberate Thorolund. Generally, it is a tale told to inspire kids to become heroes, teaching different lessons.

Yet it has some truths into it, like any other story.

Thorolund was a city, there was a Familia that protected the city under the goddess Serida, Goddess of Sunlight with its captain being a werewolf- who was quite famous for his righteousness and power. It was ravaged by monsters but a true mastermind or perpetrator behind the attack was never found. Searches have been made, in order to uncover anything that might shower some light to this tragedy. Yet nothing substantial was discovered. Thus, it led the masses to create tales about what they thought happened.

[It is easy to see the comparisons that are being made here with the Wolf Knight]

'Unfortunately, yes. Though I am not so sure about that simple story because it has too many similarities...', my attention to my thoughts, pondering on this century old tale, 'Wolf Knight, Deity of Sunlight and a city ravaged by corruption of its denizens?'

When an adventurer levels up he gets a nickname to the next Denatus. A meeting of the Gods held once every three months. Many things are discussed and aliases are given to adventurers that ranked up. Our first hero was given the title Wolf Knight.

Notably, the party mostly possess similar nicknames to their actual names in the light novel. Zahei is titled Goblin Slayer, Kiyoko Priestess and Zoltan Dwarf Shaman. On the other hand, Balrom's is Dovah and Tuka's Zephyr.

"And that about sums up what we know the city. Thankfully we have a map detailing its structure …", Tuka said while displaying a small drawing of an enclosed city

"Okay..."

"You look troubled.", notices rather quickly Zahei

"You said that we will hunt an Ogre", offering a nod I answered his observation, "While your plan is sound, I worry about its location. There aren't many places it could hide but at the same time, those locations are far from one another."

"While that is true if we follow the plan and have our wits, nothing will be able to surprise us.", Zoltan added to alleviate some of my worries

Nodding my head, I inwardly cursed at his phrasing

'We are so going to get Murphed...'

[I thought you didn't believe it], Rose poked, although her tone was just as serious. Acknowledging my feeling that things became somewhat more complex

That was when we discussed the plan. Since then, we have come across different groups of goblins and Hobgoblins as we get near the city. With both Zahei's extensive knowledge on the little buggers, Tuka's scouting and Balrom's enhanced senses, we managed to ambush all and take them out discreetly.

My inclusion to the group didn't offer much. Another pair of hands to deliver a surprise attack. My spell would be utilized sparsely, during uncomfortable situations since its finite uses.

Finally, the Wall of Thorolund was apparent. Decayed in parts, destroyed on other, but mostly standing.

'Its construction is different than what I remember. No boss to obstruct our entry...'

[Though expected and obvious, I will again express the fact-caution is needed! While it might not have the same layout, I believe you can understand that some surprises will await you. Especially with those stories baring similarities to a possible alternative you played. The actual structure would differ!]

'Of course. It's time to start the plan. Please, keep an eye on the map or if you see something weird happening to me Rose.'

[Ufufu~.Of course!]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A group of ten normal Goblins, three Hobgoblins and two Goblin mages can be seen walking the perimeter of the destroyed wall, looking around apprehensively.

They guard one of the two main entrances that grants access to the city, while a similar group protects the other one and very few are near their leader. Typically, they wouldn't have to patrol the perimeter. That would be the case should one not take into account the multiple destroyed section of the wall.

Only the normal Goblins would do such a menial task. Lately though, more and more patrols, who were tasked to scope out "their" forest, disappeared without a trace.

Prior to his lo-retreat an insignificant "discovery". Now a painful reminder of his lo-failure to massacre the insects who dared raise their weapons against it.

His previous los-fight to a group of deplorable of adventures, their leader made them take more caution and sound an alarm if they ever see anyone through their horrendous cry. To both make the ones near the leader provide support and in the same time a group would be guarding the other entrance, if they enemies try to invade one only for some to ambush them from the other.

A strategy with many holes, but an astonishing development for the dim Ogre.

However, that is not the only reason for their trepidation. No, the real reason is the fact the created a base to this damn place!

Monsters do not possess many emotions. Their nature bares many similarities with animals. Only distinctions cover instrumental circumstances of their existence. Despise of any mortal and immortal race, instinctively volatile reactions through attack. An ability to evolve-to become more intelligent, stronger as time passes by fighting or if they devour the magic cores of other monsters. In their own view only, strength matters so they can preserve the previous impulse for their entire lives.

Usually, monsters like themselves haven't developed their mental facilities extensively and rely more on their natural instincts. Those very same instincts have warned them that the city is dangerous. But the fact is, they follow the Ogre- and a clear hierarchy endures till someone more powerful takes the role... Preferably without killing them...

They will listen to his commands since he is the strongest from their perspective. Any who tried to usurp his position after he fled from the party, in hopes of taking his role as a leader were mercilessly killed and had their cores devoured by the Ogre.

So, while not happy they stay in the city while their leader is planning their next assault to a village, they continuing to perform their duties.

Suddenly as the Goblins were walking the periphery of the entrance with the Hobgoblins-three of the former used bows and along with the Goblin Mages were manning the walls above, a ball made it appearance from the tree-line.

Not understanding its function, the Hobgoblins ordered one of the weaker Goblin to examine the weird sphere. Up in the walls, the long-ranged monsters were observing to see any discrepancy in the surrounding tree-line.

As the goblin made its way to the ball, it suddenly exploded- subsequently releasing smoke all around, blinding everyone.

Seeing the spectacle one of the Casters started chanting a spell in the language of the goblins, one full of growls and awful sounds.

A fireball was appearing in the staff it was wielding. A terrible thing. Wood as black as the night with a skull of a deer on the top.

Finishing it turned to throw it at the smoke, to dispel it.

The only thing it got was an arrow to the face.

A deadly hit with no sound. The arrowhead buried deeply to its victim.

The goblin didn't know what it was hit by nor its early demise, dispelled slowly in motes. The fireball was sizzling-dying out with a supply from its caster.

The other goblins three tried to do anything but two throwing knifes found their target in the skulls of the archers instantly killing them.

A sword to find its way to the last caster's heart.

It all happened in so little time. The others did not understand what transpired.

But as they saw no fireball a Hobgoblin tried to look back-to be distracted by the sudden appearance of a pink colored mist intermingled with the fading white smog.

Gradually, monsters started swaying after simply breathing the air to understand what it was. Grasping something was wrong they attempted to find the culprit. Alone a Demi-Human, with green scales to his limbs and face and a tail, fell from the wall to one of the Hobgoblins piercing its head with the bone scimitar in his hands.

Enraged by the familiar adventurer- no matter the bulging muscles that weren't hidden through his clothes- that laid one of their own down, the remaining Hobgoblins attempted to rush him. Goblins being more susceptible to the pink hued mist, which has miraculously dispelled, fell asleep- no matter their desperate attempts to stay wake.

On their part, Hobgoblins were affected by a feeling of drunkenness slowing their meager mind-yet not completely out-tried to swing their weapons, a club and a great sword.

Balrom calmly stepped back- his enlarged frame having no difficulty to follow-and allowed the hits to miss while he brandished his scimitar in a defensive position.

Their initial strikes failing, they snarled at the adventurer. Baring their prolonged teeth and growled threateningly. An attempt to express both their anger and instill fear.

Exactly as planned.

A target present, another identical arrow completed its journey on the back of the club wielding monster. Effortlessly it killed.

Left alone, the last Hobgoblin blinked in surprise. Its intellect deciphered how unfavorable the situation is. It tried to scream- to follow its leader's orders.

Sooner a sound was made, a silver haired youth jumped from his perch atop the wall and impale his sword in its throat.

Alas the last minster was drowning in a pool of its own blood. An injury fatal enough, it shifted into a magical core.

Succeeding its death Akira and Balrom killed the rest of the sleeping goblins, while Zahei was keeping watch in case of any strugglers. Tuka, Kiyoko and Zoltan approached the clearing from the woods.

'That was simple enough.', plunging his blade, he slightly winced. Even with [Gamer's Mind], it was due to impulse. The skill temporally blocks any distractions.

[Indeed~ Having Balrom scaling the wall with his enhanced strength after he cast the spell [Partial Dragon], providing him greater strength with the added bonus of transforming his hands into claws. Then you and Zahei climbed after him using a rope he dropped. The smoke bomb created the chance for Zahei to travel behind the monsters at the wall of so as to make a pincer attack between you three on top of the wall. Tuka supported with the bow and Zoltan with the spell [Stupor] disabling most enemies. Of course, that was possible by Kiyoko's [Silence], otherwise your "squad's" steps and Tuka's arrows would have made some noise~]

I nod inwardly, some chuckles escape me as I peer at Tuka's face-a smile on my own-, only for her to immediately avert her eyes with a huff.

The moment the plan was laid, I drew a conclusion.

'So, you used the spell to spy on me before your team arrived?'

The answer was an embarrassed laugh from her, along an explanation from Zoltan. Apparently, she was so confident that she wouldn't be found out that 'long ears' didn't need it-his words not mine-.

That got her to argue against him that she would be able to escape if she was spotted. An argument valid, through my inability to find her before the team reveal themselves.

In the meantime, I found ever more fuel for my teasing. Her pride.

Tuka, apparently "felt" my thoughts and glared at me as if conveying-'Do not even try!'.

It earned her an innocent look that she didn't quite believe.

Since then, she apparently gave me a 'cold shoulder' much to my amusement. My evilness truly knows no bounds!

Bah! Not everyone can appreciate the subtle art of teasing! No matter the World!

Shaking my thoughts, giving a polite nod to the trio, we all turn to the Slayer himself.

"That went quite alright wouldn't you say fearless leader?", I asked with mirth very clear in my voice.

"Yes. But didn't I tell you to stop calling me that?", asked Zahei with a deadpan-At least I think so... Tough to tell with his helmet though~-

"Yep~.", while extra emphasis was on the p.

Sighing our fearless leader dropped the subject while Zoltan was openly chuckling

"Leave the lad would ya! He did quite job, right? ",

To that I gave him a thankful nod.

Originally I was not to accompany them at the wall but stay with the three of them.

I of course argued against such plan since with Kiyoko's [Silence] was a prime opportunity to attack with more numbers. She didn't know if her spell could affect my own. An experiment I wouldn't put into practice without another obvious solution.

Accompanying the duo.

Though I told logically, it was slightly surprising that Zahei had some reservations before he too agreed. The others supported my choice a little too fat for my liking. But alas nothing happened to warrant my suspicions. If there was a weird maneuver to trap me Rose would caution me.

I... could be a little paranoid, no doubt. Yet my mind was used to overanalyzing any sequence of events- for better or worst. I have no desire to be caught off guard and later regret it.

Knowledge of a version of these people doesn't equate to adequate awareness of their characters. It requires a lot more to truly trust them beyond the boundaries of this mission.

"Should we continue with the plan or go after the Ogre wherever it is?", an inkling to the answer provided existed in the back of my mind from out r fearless leader. It was more to take my mind away from pertaining thoughts on possibilities.

"We will fist eliminate any goblin we see, proceeding towards the other entrance. If we fight the Ogre, then some team of goblins could ambush us."

Nodding my head, as we all get up, Tuka starts scouting ahead of our group for any monsters, us following at a comfortable distance.

Thankfully the streets appeared barren as moss was covering them and vegetation grew on any buildings. The view did create a weird sense equally creepy and serene.

The city had some towers adorning certain locations and some houses that while destroyed can still be seen as mansions of a bygone era, most were destroyed.

However, it still was imposing. Even with a part of it destroyed, I could still discern the structure. After all its walls were higher than most structures.

'Another possible location of a boss...', at least in the game.

Nonetheless I was transfixed by the sight. My gut feeling churning inside, telling me that the Ogre is probably there.

'And this isn't going to be a normal mission after all...', a sigh left me, gaining the attention of one "teammate"

"Are you okay young Akira?"

"Please, just call me by my name.", shaking my head, I look at the face of Balrom and plainly speak. Frowning I point towards the Coliseum, "I simply get a really weird feeling at that location. Can't really explain it though...."

"That is the coliseum correct?", raised an eyebrow Zoltan, "While I get ya might be feeling uneasy, don't forget the town has been searched for any possible weird phenomena. Probably the city is the reason for your worry. Even I'm feeling weird seeing the cursed city up close...."

Humming I simply let go of the matter hoping that he was right.

Goblins while stupid, are still monsters that hold the pack mentality of animals. So, time is of the essence as we do not want to start an alarm, since they could investigate why their brethren did not come back to change shifts.

Apparently while monsters are basically constructed through a monster core, they still possess some basic needs. Sleeping is the most prevalent along with fatigue. Also, they could feel hunger, which can be satiated through the consumption of other monster cores.

After we managed to defeat the patrol of the other entrance and any other goblin we might have stumble upon we started searching through the locations most likely to be the layer of the Ogre.

The manor of the Serida Familia was by far the largest residential building in lieu it being the strongest and largest Familia in the city. Afterwards we had the houses or better manors of the more influential merchants who sent some representatives from their families to establish themselves in the upcoming "utopia". Suffice to say that didn't go exactly as planned...

While there were some other locations we could have gone ,Zahei observed that most places in the residential district weren't visited, considering the number of Goblins he imagined there would be in the city, some signs would be obvious, if they took residence near the locations we investigated. As to lose more time Goblin slayer displayed his knowledge regarding the green buggers after examining some minutes any location.

Thus, it was decided that we should try search the Colosseum. A fair decision, which did cause me to groan inwardly after seeing some goblins idling outside the entrance to the Arena.

"So, what now fearless leader?", I inquired with humor trying to hide my anxiety at the fact I pretty much taste something going awry.

"While they are out in the open, we have already spent some time searching. A more direct approach is the best option here.", spoke Zahei unemotionally.

A nod to show my own accord, I inwardly asked Rose

'Will it work Rose?'

[But of course~! After all, Zahei has earned the nickname goblin slayer for a reason],came her cheerful voice

'You know what I mean....'

[... I know.], suddenly she turned serious, any trace of humour vanishing, [While it is not perfect it will work. Concurrently, it would be best if you simply tried to escape, should what we fear come to fruition... The loss of those five will be a concern for their Familia, you will be able to get to the city through other means. Nobody will fault you if you try to save your life.]

'I know. However, -' sighing my musing were interrupted by her grumbling

[Yes, yes. It would not do running away, since you have those aces. Additionally, it might be the for the very best, if you tried it when you have people that could provide as scapegoats for distraction, assuming something goes wrong and you decide to leave. Should it work, you can try to inquire about a possible form of Geis in this world. If they refuse after that well... we well be able to see experiments with the more interesting and unique spells. Are you ready to carry that burden though?], she stated with a tone of severity only to express concern at the end, [Especially when the whole trouble is due to your desire to help them with your power.]

'...Thank you for your concern.', a genuine smile flashes momentarily, 'I would have to make a similar decision anyway. But at least if I need to use them, I will be able to get enough Excellia or Exp to level up.'

During our talk, Zoltan finished his incantation.

"A feast to Dumac, the king who receives only the finest of drinks. Experience the burning sensation! [Stupor]"

Taking a bottle of fire wine, he releases it through a red magic circle that appeared before his mouth. A fine mist spreads though the atmosphere. Balrom completes his own chant then.

"Honorable ancestors, I beseech of you the strength of a warrior. One who will aid us in this battle. One who will experience the taste of combat once more in the mortal realm. I call upon, [Dragon Tooth Warrior]!"

He dropped several fangs which sunk in the ground where another-different magic circle made its appearance. Suddenly a skeletal hand came out, followed by what seems to be bones of a Lizard man, melted together to form what I would identify as a skeleton back in Yggdrasil.

But apparently not....

Back when I showed my spell Balrom and Kiyoko explained to me some stuff about spells. Keeping the truthful case of cluelessness concerning Magic was simple. I genuinely don't know the Magic of Danmachi, so I didn't not have to adopt a façade. As such they were more than happy to explain some questions I had.

Apparently, spells need an incantation to be cast, the caster themselves being immobile during the process. Deep concentration is required for the successful activation of any spell. Eventually a magic circle manifests, though even without it some spells will still be cast, and voila.

You can shorten it, but at the risk of the spell being unstable. The range of possible outcomes vary. It could misfire, explode on the face of the caster, not be cast, become far weaker than intended are few examples. Of course, by having the right skills you can move and cast an incantation. You can even shorten the chant. However, those abilities are usually reserved for mages over level three since those are development abilities that anyone can learn by completing the requirements to unlock them and levelling up.

Only Riveria of the Loki Familia has been stated to have cast a spell without a chant and a quite impressive one at that. Something that slightly took me by surprise since I do not remember anything like that in the story of Danmachi. Although it could be credited to the fact, I had only seen some episode of season 3 where the Xenos were introduced. I did not read the light novel so I couldn't know if this was a new element in the world or something that was established

Lastly, they both possess spells. Indicating the Miracles their versions in the Goblin Slayer World- have transformed in the form of Spells in the Danmachi World. Moreover, Balrom's spell can be classified as necromancy in Yggdrasil, a question that garnered a peculiar result due to a query whether or not he 'summons the dead?'.

It isn't considered as such. The spell is a form of Summoning Magic and the summon isn't a true undead but mana given a form of a skeletal being. Though practically the same thing in my mind, when I inquired, his face showed discomfort .He adamantly refused using such "vile" Magic.

Food for thought.

Now it's time to deal with the problem at hand.

The main part of the plan was for us to draw the goblins out and kill them in the open. If the Ogre appears we could easily leave. That is why in the front lines Zahei ,Balrom and Zoltan are stationed, while Tuka is acting as support constantly moving and using her talents with the longbow. I, along with Kiyoko, act as support. Kiyoko with her healing and me with my "unique ability" as they know, while providing protection to the Healer.

But as to contribute to their fight I lifted my right arm and simply mutter.

"[Lightning]"

As the name suggests, a white bolt of lightning shoots from my finger and pierced a goblin and a Goblin Mage.

[Double kill~!], intoned Rose, almost evoking a snort of amusement out of me.

At the same time Tuka from a building she scaled in order to have better perception of the battle, displayed her prowess with a bow- by shooting a Hobgoblin in the head. Our front line not wasting a chance after the [Stupor] took affect sprung to action battling the stronger opponents as the summon was killing the Goblins.

The plan was basically to destroy their forces and eliminate them efficiently. If they are going to come out of the Colosseum ,Zahei has some special potions that are called [Burst Oil] from a contact of his. He would use it in the entrance which the monsters would come out of to eliminate more of them.

Thankfully while destroyed the building hasn't gotten a wall destroyed, so there aren't any other entrances where we could be ambushed. That is why when we started our impromptu ambush, we let a goblin go inside the building to call for backup.

Seemingly our opponents did not stand a chance, whereas our fight might draw out the leader out of here. Alternatively, we could lure it, at the very least in the arena above.

The final battle of this mission is at hand.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Coinciding with the adventurer's fight against the monsters, under the Colosseum, the very same Ogre they were tasked to fight, was lazing around eating a monster core his "subordinates" procured.

He was a large monster-almost three men tall and wise- with green skin, fanged teeth, dark nails and yellow eyes. Near him lays an enormous metal club. In defiance of his apparent physical might, he is able to cast some magic to evaporate all he wishes.

While he was "busy" eating cores- which didn't truly provide with enough sustenance to strengthen himself- a goblin made its way towards him.

"Why do you disturb me? Have you come to be a sacrifice to my glorious self?", the words gave with growls. It wasn't language of mortals but that of monsters.

Even if he has taken the position of leader, he abhors his weak subordinates. After all he was a powerful variant Ogre! Why should he care about the weaker ones? They are useless! They can't fight and it was their uselessness that created the opportunity for those Adventures to hurt him. After all, how could those weaklings even dream of touching him!

And to make matters worse it was the one who disrespected him. Daring to hurt him when his pathetic life hung over his grasp.

His fury ignited, rising as he was reminded his disgrace.

.

.

Conveniently forgetting his arrogance was that led to defeat.

He contemplated whether he should devour this little one, the goblin hurriedly reported that the same adventures are at their base and have ambushed them.

Surprised that his Hatred enemies are here, once again enraged that his minions couldn't even properly defend his base or follow his magnificent plan! - he raised his weapons and disregarding the pleas of the Goblin, obliterated it.

"USELESS! ALL OF YOU HAD ONLY ONE JOB!", he started roaring with frustration.

Maybe, were he calm- not drowned in illusion of slaughter- the Ogre might have noticed the small intruder creeping ever so slowly.

"I WILL KILL THEM! THIS TIME YOU WILL NOT BE SPARED FROM MY WRATH!", after all the only reason why he hid-no took "refuge" in this weird place-, was because it was the most appropriate location.

How could his supreme ego degrade himself and hole up in a cave like his weakest minions? Even if it was giving him a bad feeling, how could he run? He was one of the strongest monsters! A larger village build by people should never make him feel fear! After all nothing would stand in his way.

Most monsters don't develop a sense of self. Instead, they follow what instincts dictate.

Sometimes a monster can create or acquire a personality. Of course, said personality is cruel and more times than not full of arrogance. Appropriate for beings with the sole aspiration to kill any life not of their kind...

Monsters- those who are previously described- are only above level 2. The accumulations of all experiences- battles, murder, survival, a repeating circle of killing- would allow their monster core to develop in abstruse paths.

In addition to that evolution, unique abilities could be attained.

Better physical strength, magical abilities, a powerful skill- which for example allows them to have tougher skin or command other weaker monsters- and of course an "evolution"-far more literal- to their mental faculties.

Peculiarly, not all thinking monsters are inherently ruthless. A surprising idea. Humorous even, considering how ludicrous and preposterous the concept might seem.

Most of the time, they submit to their fundamental purpose. Hurting all races, they come across. Be it human or Demi-Human.

An intelligent monster that won't fight is a rarity and only reserved for monsters delegated to guard an area. Their sense of duty overriding their bloodlust...

The most obvious example are Xenos. Pacifistic monsters born in the Dungeon. Essentially distant from the more common cousins Adventurers kill. Of course, they are able to fight and will do if threatened! Alas, they would be inclined to build communities for themselves in secret locations in the Dungeon itself.

A piece of information baffling and... unknown to most.

As he was starting to move out to get his revenge.

He was so enraged enough to miss a thin shadow of darkness making its way towards his back.

And suddenly the Ogre was no more....

The thin shadow- discarding any law of physics and rationality- extended and perched through back of the neck, bypassing effortlessly any defense of the Ogre's thick hide. Cutting its spinal cord, instantly delivering the fatal blow.

The Ogre, who thought himself invincible, fell to the ground not even knowing he died.

"You....talk....too.....much.....", a raspy aged voice sounded. The shadow extended itself and grabbed the core of the fading monster

"Had...to ....wait.. for so long!", it retreated to the chamber it came from.

"Eating the... leftover cores ….this useless monster left!", the shadow was frustrated. After so long a monster finally appeared near its place.

Normally any monster would never visit the city much less the Colosseum. But this Ogre, a monster of low strength not only was near it, but also brought cores with him.

Usually, it would never lower itself and eat the cores of lower monsters, but it needed strength to kill, the "weak" Ogre. Disregarding the fact, it was a level three variant monster that most adventurers would run away. Only a team could have a chance at defeating it.

After all wasn't he the one who has seen the birth of the Abyss?

The pool his mistress utilizes?

The one tasked by its master, the city Destroyer herself, to annihilate this little settlement and later expand its power to the whole Forest?

Though it hated the "weak" Ogre, it felt... kinship.

Not enough to pity the dumb ingrate! Just, it took had thorns, preventing the completion of its mission...

A disgrace that resulted in its master abandoning it!

How could she not?! It was its fault!!!

'No...', hatred erupted from the depths of its mind. Its tar tendril spasmed erratically at the mere mention.

The damn Wolf knight was a fun opponent to stave its boredom, only to seal it using crafty means, after he run away. But it got its revenge.

Yet the other, the one called Undead for her ability to survive the impossible, after years came and defeated it.

A sadistic chuckle emanated from the shimmering shadow, as it remembered that how after its defeat, it managed to exact revenge.

As it appeared into another chamber it gleefully... expanded.

It coiled, forming a small circle with itself. Darkness covered the empty space, a body arrived from out of the darkness.

One he painstakingly tried to keep after his death.

Nonetheless, it was required to complete the next step. Silver and blue armour adorned its deteriorating carcass. Next a great sword seemingly bathed in darkness was held by its right hand. Its flesh was rotten and at some points even blackened and seemingly alive as the darkness danced around it.

It gleefully put the monster core where the heart of the body was supposed to be.

The black spots immateriality rushed around, the core sunk into the body.

The shadow lamented on the fact the core was only of such poor quality...

It even needed to steal monster cores when it could so it could deliver the final strike to the Ogre!

To replace its dead heart with the core.

Unfortunately, it wouldn't be nearly as powerful as it used to. Merely a fraction of itself. But such thoughts were dismissed. After all it would be able to contact its master, if it gets near Orario.

And then-then!!!

Its glorious master will make it strong again!

As the shadow was entering the body through all its pores, a disturbing display where the frail line of darkness ceremonially barged into its new host.

The mana in the air started becoming.... tainted.

The body, a mere corpse of an era centuries away, moved.

Its right hand spasmed.

Its legs moved slowly.

Like a dream- a fantasy of the subconscious- it groggily got up.

Should one feel- observe its emotion. Pure euphoria erupted!

A need to rambunctiously laugh at the sensation of overflowing energy in its veins.

It got the great-sword. After all it had some adventurers to kill.

It- NO HE was back!

And the world will fear the firstborn of the Abyss....
