Lee Miyeon (Irene) was adopted as a child when her parents who were Korean immigrants died in an unfortunate accident. Her foster parents initially treated her kindly but  changed after they were able to conceive a child of their own. She was eventually sent abroad after a traumatic incident threatened the Lee Family's reputation in high society. After Miyeon was left alone in the hotel suite, she quickly called out loud, "It's bitter!" before losing consciousness.

In actuality, Miyeon had agreed with Rich beforehand that under no circumstance was he allowed to intervene unless she used their agreed upon distress signal 'Bitter." Rich had been very reluctant to comply with Miyeon's request. Since he had already known her for so many years, Rich knew Miyeon's tolerance for suffering and other people's 'bullshit' was unnecessarily high. The girl is basically the personification of the Madonna. 'Christ, the girl put herself through Cambridge University. God knows what she would do in order to get a confession out of Su Tian,' Rich worriedly thought.
