First Day of Class

Despite her good intentions, Apryl didn't end up getting into looking through her textbook for her first class until far later that night than she had meant to. Not even a few pages into the book, she regretted her decision to put it off, most of the words she wasn't familiar with. It was going to take her some time to learn them and she wasn't sure she was up to going through the dictionary so frequently for all the words that she was unfamiliar with.

She was certain that it was something that she would be able to ask her Aunt to help with, but not to bother her with all her homework, but just if there was an easier way to learn the words she didn't know quicker.

Keith had told her that there would be an option for tutoring, but the fear of looking like a complete illiterate fool in front of a stranger for a reason she couldn't explain honestly didn't sit well with her.

She hardly got into the book before she decided to drop it for the night because there wasn't going to be enough time for her to read and sleep if she wanted to be able to pay attention to her first class. She just hoped that maybe the professor would be understanding if she was slower with her homework compared to some of her other classmates.

The next morning she made sure to wear something that her aunt had assured her would make her look more like a student and fit in well with everyone else. She also fixed her hair into a better ponytail and clipped the front back with two butterfly hair clips her aunt had also gifted her.

Her nerves were terribly as she didn't know what to expect once she was in class which meant that she decided to take lunch with her but skipped breakfast as she didn't want to spend the entire time in class feeling sick even though classes wouldn't start until the afternoon.

She had asked her aunt for some ideas on what might help her to more quickly learn the words and helped her download an app that she could use voice recognition to ask what a word was since spelling at times still poised a problem if Apryl didn't look at the word six or seven times when she writing it down or trying to find it in the dictionary.

The other option she showed her that she could use was called 'google' it also allowed her to use her voice to look up words, places, and anything else she needed by talking into it. She had to get her phone to recognize her voice first though otherwise it wouldn't end up recognizing her voice and pick up so she could ask her question.

Both her aunt and mother gave her a hug before she left and reassured her that there wasn't going to be anything to worry about and that despite the way she felt, class was going to more fun and far easier than she was thinking about.

She felt her feet getting heavier as she got closer to the campus but continued going forward anyways as she didn't want to end up being late for her first day of class. Keith had even sent her a text to wish her good luck and to also tell her that class was going to be fine.

Finding her classroom turned out to be a bit of a challenge because it was on the side of the campus that she was less familiar with and in a building that she had never entered before.

The halls inside of the liberal arts building were more packed than she would've liked and in order to find the room where her class was held in, she had often move between and push past students who were standing around talking or walking in a different direction from her.

She finally found her classroom on the second floor once she realized that the way the numbers went on each door lead the 202 number classroom she was on to be on the second floor.

Peaking inside, she saw that there were a few students sitting scattered in the seats waiting for the class to start. Apryl knew that she was ten minutes early, but she would chose to be too early than be late and make a bad impression her first day of class.

Not knowing what to expect, she decided to pick a seat located towards the far back right corner where she believed she wouldn't attract too much attention if she sat in it.

Two of the other students in the classroom, both girls looked up from their textbooks inquisitively when she entered the room but once they noticed she was just another student, they went back to what they were doing. She rather thankful that no one tried to talk to her.

Getting out everything she thought that she would need, she put it neatly on her desk, setting her textbook on top of her notebook. She looked warily at the textbook feeling already as though it would end up being the doom of her in this class if she couldn't catch up on the words. She tried to also keep all the rules of about classroom etiquette in mind that her aunt had told her about, especially making sure to silence her phone so that it would not go off in the middle of class.

The closer it go to the class starting, the more students started to trickle in and pick what seats they were most comfortable sitting in. By the time that most of the classroom was filled, Apryl had started to feel a little claustrophobic with how close other students were sitting towards her.

She hadn't realized when there were few students in classroom how close the seats were actually placed to each other. She was supposed it was so that they could fit more students in the classroom, but she didn't like it.

It was two minutes after noon before the professor entered the classroom. A tall man in his mid forties with thick black hair entered the classroom with a book and binders under his arm. He walked over the podium that was up at the front of the classroom and stood behind it, putting the items under his arm down he surveyed the class. He seemed happy to see that the class was mostly full.

"Hello, is James Rust, but you can call me dr. Rusty while you're in the class. I will be your teacher for the next eight weeks and I am hoping to get a lot accomplished this first day of class." He introduced himself as he looked over the classroom to make sure that everyone was paying attention as he spoke.

"Now the first thing we will be doing today is introductions and then we will move onto the syllabus." Apryl felt her heart drop when she heard introduction being mentioned. No one had told her to expect something like this on the first day of class.
