Yona and Remi arrive at the mountain mansion; it's mid-morning, so Yona goes into the office. Opening the secret door, he shows Remi what's inside.
"This is like Aisling's room at the house. The one h ty at goes to the cabin. Where does this one lead?" Remi asks Yona.
"This one leads to a place where the owner was happiest. When he is not here, it only opens to a vault with his happiest memories. Does anything look familiar to you?" Yona's eyes twinkle as he watches his wife explore the room. Behind a curtain is a portrait. She gasps as she looks at it.
"This is Morrigan with a baby, and is that a little fox." Remi turns to Yona to see his smile.
"Yes, the same little fox that visited a certain child a decade or so past. The owner of the mansion is the same fox that marked Lilli. I'm not sure how he is exactly connected to Morrigan, but I'm sure she has orchestrated it so that he and Lilli are to be together. You have met him often, but he is not in his true form. When you meet him, you must promise not to reveal who he is. He says if Lilli knows him in his true form before it's time, her soul can become corrupted. He says he cannot allow that to happen. I have a feeling that they met in the past, and possibly that is what happened. So he is taking extra care this time. " Yona explains to Remi they leave the secret room just as Shiro calls out for Yona.
"Yona, are you here yet? I shimmered so I could ride back with you. I told mom that I was going to be with you today..." Shiro tells him as he walks into the office. He stops when he sees Remi. Remi's eyes get big with surprise.
"You are the owner, I knew that you were a fox spirit, but I didn't know that you were Lilli's fox spirit." Remi smiles, her heart relieved that she now knows that Lilli's love is so close.
"I am; this is my true human form." Shiro shifts into his true form. Sitting in the seat next to the window, he sighs.
"That is why I wanted to see you; I don't know what to do. Lilli remembered meeting me in my true human form. She loves this me, not the Shiro me. If I show her my true human form before she is of the age of choosing, her heart can become corrupted. " Shiro sighs with sadness. Remi giggles at his dilemma.
"Why do you say she will become corrupted?" Yona asks as he shoots a glaring look at his wife.
"When I was in my lifetime with Morrigan, her youngest child at the time saw me shift into my human form. I loved her completely; as she grew, my love for her marked her. As my mark grew, so did her power. She saw me shift into human form one night and became obsessed with power and greedily used it for her own gain. In the end, she enslaved me instead of loving me. Eliza used the power until she was put to death. After that, I hid away as much as possible from the outside world. Morrigan told me that one day I would love again just as passionately but that my love would be returned. What if Lilli will not love me as I love her. What if my love becomes poisonous to her as Morrigan's daughter. " Shiro's eyes fill with tears as he tells them about Eliza.
"Lilli is not like other girls; she has power in her own right. She has been taught to be careful with her powers and not to use them for personal gain. You do not need to hide from her. She will love you, I promise you. She already does both as Shiro and her destined love. She does not know it yet." Remi tells him.
"I asked her last night who she imagined as her destined love. She described me in this form. I have waited for so long for her, and now I'm worried it was for not." Putting his face into the palms of his hand's tears flowing freely, Shiro reverts into fox form. Morrigan appears and picks him up. Cuddling him as she sits on the chair.
"Oh my little fox, I am sorry you have suffered because of me. It was not your fault that Eliza died or became corrupted. You see, it was her jealousy over her sister. When I decided to live as a human, the father took my powers away; that way, I would not be able to foresee what would become of my family. One daughter was born with powers while the other was not. When your love for Eliza gave her certain abilities, she became greedy. It was not your love that caused her to become that way; it was her hatred and jealousy. She could not love anyone because she could not love herself. You need not worry about Lilli. She will love you as you are in any form. Now stop being a baby and dry up those tears." Morrigan nuzzles the fox before sitting him back on the chair. Shifting back into the form of Shiro, he looks sadly at her.
"I am sorry for Eliza. I know you have not gotten over her death in all these years. If I had not been with you, she would never have tasted power." Shiro whispers sadly.
"My sweet little fox, you know I have never told anyone about Eliza for one reason. That is because she was my failure as a mother. If I had been a better mother instead of being so wrapped up in my own grief. I would have noticed that Eliza was filled with anger and jealousy. When the twins were born, they were like lotus and Lilli. One took after their father and one after me. Eliza was like me, but she had no powers. I was drawn to her sister because she was so much like her father. It had nothing to do with her having powers. Unfortunately, it was because of that that she felt unloved. That is why I have asked the father to allow me to have a connection with my bloodline. So that I can correct my mistakes, it is also why you do not have the same curse as your siblings. Your love will not have to choose to give their life for you to become human. " Morrigan tells Shiro. Hearing these words, his head jerks up, looking confused.
"What do you mean? Why would Lilli need to die for me?" The anxiety in his voice comes out as a high-pitched yell. One that rattled the windows.
"When a fox finds a human willing to give their life for them, they become human. Lilli will not need to make that choice. The father decided on the day you sacrificed your soul orb to save me that your love would never have to choose. You need never worry about that. It's his promise." Morrigan soothes Shiro. He looks at his hands, grateful for the first time that he had not found his love until now. That the father will not make her die for him. He would rather never know love than to have her die.
Hugging Morrigan tightly, Shiro cries into her shoulder. When he finally finished crying, he goes to the secret room. This time the room opens to Morrigan's home that he lived when she was human. Remi and Yona follow, looking around. It's so small and cozy. Nothing fancy or extravagant. It's only four rooms. On the wall are hand drawings they are of a girl very much like Lilli. Her expression is not one of happiness but an underlying sadness and anger. Morrigan sighs. These pictures show the true nature of her child. How could she have missed noticing this? Turning towards Shiro, she asks.
"Why have you kept this place?" Morrigan looks at him intensely.
"I kept it to remind me what could happen if I loved. But now I would like to destroy it. It is no longer needed. Once this place is gone, she will be able to be at peace. Please help me make a new place one of hope and beauty. Most thought this room was for my happiest memories, and for the most part, it was. It was mostly here to remind me to be careful. " Shiro tells them. Morrigan nods in agreement, and the four of them begin to remake Shiro's secret room. The main part they connected it to Aisling's secret room. That way, he could go to and from without detection. To Shiro's delight, they placed an undetectable portal to his current home. So when he needed to, he just needed to open a door and be either at Aisling's home or the mountain mansion. This will make things easier for Yona as well. So when needed, he can access the portal from either place without detection of the fallen ones.
