15. DAYS GONE BY.

It had been two days since that night and everything had gone smoothly if she had to say. She had managed to avoid the mistress of the house, the husband, the kids and any distractions in her work. Jayden had somehow warmed up to her since that night but she still felt incomplete like something was missing.

She closed the chest she had opened and walked to her seat. She could consider herself lucky as she was given a room all to herself, food was provided and she could use the library if she so desired. She had stationed her seat by the window so that she could look out. The view from her seat was breathtaking no matter how many times she saw it.

There was a huge tree right by her window. It wasn't too close to inconvenience the light but it wasn't too far either. It would shed its leaves as the wind blew by making the view spectacular. Holding her book in hand, she took a seat and placed it on her lap. She wondered what had happened that day.

Her memory was vague and when she came to, she was here. As she thought if these things, her mind went back to the night she met the family. This family had been one she did not expect, she thought she had problems but here…

They did not even hide their animosity towards their brother and little sister. They never said it verbally but, they did show it. What was sadder, as that the ones on being persecuted had no idea what was going on. Jayden and Jodie had their rooms to the west while the rest had their rooms to the east.

Her mind went back to that day.

As they walked back to their rooms, Jodie had a look on her face that Felicity knew all too well. She stopped before her door and just waited. Felicity took it upon herself to open the door for her but she still stood there. Her little mind seemed to have taken too much that it could not bare anymore.

Jayden came along and the look on his face was just like hers. Perhaps even worse. Felicity noticed that he too had a lot on his mind which meant that he paid little attention to what was around him. He knocked the leg of a stool that had a vase sitting on top of it. Luckily, Felicity had seen this coming and had responded fast.

She stopped the vase from falling and sighed. Jayden looked at her apologetically and looked like he wanted to say something but did not. Instead, he looked up ahead and saw his little sister by her door. She did not move, a part of him broke further seeing this side of her. He felt a tight knot tie itself in his heart.

Felicity put a hand in front of him to stop him from going to her. Jaden stepped aside and tried going to her but she stopped him. He looked at her angry from this behavior and almost pushed her out of the way when he stopped. The look in her eyes was more intense than the one he had on his face. He backed down.

She stood beside him and they both looked at her.

"Going to her in your state, do you really think you can do anything?"

He opened his mouth to speak but more words flew out of her mouth before he even had the chance.

"Don't think she will be happy knowing that her dear brother went out of his way just to cheer her up even though he too feels the same." She looked at him. "She might not look like it but she does know what happens around her. She is no idiot." She looked back toward Jodie. "Entrust her to me. It is my job after all."

She said while walking away. Jayden watched her as she went and tapped her shoulder. Jodie looked up at her and smiled. Fake as it was, Jayden felt more disgusted by his family for not seeing what they were doing was wrong. Felicity asked her to enter her room and she did. Felicity followed her and closed the door.

Once inside, Jodie asked her to leave but she did not. Instead, she knelt down and tapped her shoulders. Jodie turned around and she saw a hand stretched out to her. She wondered what this was for and hesitantly took it. Felicity immediately grabbed her hand and pulled her to her chest. Jodie was shocked by this and did not react.

"You did good." She said.

Her voice was soothing and motherly. These words might not have meant much but no one had ever told them to her. Her brother would only hug her because he did not know what words he could say to cheer her up. He had been in that position far longer than she had, yet, he could not change it.

When her ears heard these words, she broke down. Felicity's hand held her back while patting her head. She tried not to make too much noise because she did not want anyone hearing her.

"Sorry."

"No need to apologize. Every dark cloud has its cleaning technique. Your family is way better than mine. Just remember, you are no longer alone, okay?"

Her words reached their destination and she nodded. They sat there in silence. At the door, Jayden had seen and heard what was happening. Felicity had purposely left the door open for this. It was up to him whether to listen or not. However, now he was sure that not only was she good but also kind. And this was the kind of person she needed.

Someone who was not corrupted by their world. Someone who had seen the dark and was still puree. One with no attachments. One with a big heart, with this, Jyden was sure that se would walk down the right path.
