Spinning Wheels, Resting Wheels

~Chapter 133~

Mae hadn't really managed to get any sleep in those early morning hours. Not for lack of trying. But rather because she spent her time dozing, slipping in and out, unable to stop her mind from running like a hamster on a wheel; Xial, Diastin, Nimaro, Jasper, Jack, every action, every choice, every promise, every memory, played again and again in a tormenting endless loop.

"How do you fall asleep so easy?" she questioned Jack poking his leg, while resting at his side. "It's completely unfair. Your head hits the pillow and goodnight! Meanwhile I flop around like a fish for a half hour no matter how tired I am."

"It's simple. There's no peace for a guilty mind," he replied with a wide grin. "I have a clear conscience. Which makes me wonder, what you're guilty of?"

"If there's truly no rest for the wicked, I'm surprised how anyone manages to sleep through the night."

"That's easy, they don't feel guilty over what they've done."
