Chapter 29: The Home Visit

Vazar rode the underground train with me in silence, both lost in our own thoughts. I was worrying about Fatima, but once she regained consciousness, she assured me she was fine. It was the shock of seeing Vazar’s true form that was the icing on the cake of my story. We sat with her for a while making sure she was fine and lucid before separating and continuing our journeys home.

Fatima revealed she had found a small room within a house-sharing system towards the west side of London, near one of the large universities. She lived with 3 other girls who were students and studying to become doctors. Fatima was the only girl who worked among them. I learned that my cousin was a temp in London, which meant she hopped from one job to the next as and when the need arose. It gave her a weekly income and flexibility.

“What are you thinking?” Vazar asked me.

I squeezed his hand in mine. “Just about today. It was a big day.”
