Chapter 40: The Signing

Fawaaz sighed, a long deep breath, that could have been the prelude to something good or bad. “I have been in lengthy discussions with the elders. It took some convincing, but the odds are in our favour. With the development of Hannah’s new powers, the elders are reluctant to force you two to separate and go your own ways. They are uncertain of what lengths Hannah will go to, to remain by Vazar’s side. Therefore, they have decided it is best to release Vazar from the vase.”

I held my breath, waiting for the but to come. There was no way the elders were going to let us get off scot-free.

“But…” he paused for added effect.

There it was, the ‘but’. My heart skipped a beat.

“But, Vazar must serve his punishment in an alternative way. Community service at the local university. One day a week.”

“Oh, that isn’t too bad. In fact, it’s great!” Vazar let go of my hand and sank into a nearby chair.

I nodded. Community service was welcome news.
